Even thousands of elite expert forces, mounted or otherwise, could be completely demoralized by a sniper picking them off from a mile away or artillery they can't see blowing huge holes in the ground. The big deal in the first chapters was the might of the Empire (big nation 1) an army of 120,000 was completely broken by a few military helicopters strafing the lines. The other Big Nation is the one that raided Japan through the gate and the heir is an arrogant moron planning to attack the JSDF and teach the filthy peasants a lesson. That would be interesting to see, but the last couple chapters have been "Elf girl is mentally broken, things otaku soldier is her father, he thinks the best way to cure her is make her face the GIANT loving DRAGON that killed her village" rather then oh I don't know taking her to a mental health expert to help her come to terms with it. Then again, Japan's perception of mental health professionals is less then stellar.

Wait, but it was the Empire who invaded through the gate, and the army that was annihilated by the helicopters was just the survivors of the earlier attack against the JSDF base that wanted to sack any town for loot because they were sore losers/hungry with nothing to lose. Right? I find it really hard to keep track of all the poo poo going on in this manga sometimes.

Dickhead Fantasy Empire (DFE) opens Gate, rushes though, starts loving up Ginza. JSDF goes all on DFE's rear end and pushes them back through the Gate. Japanese government sets up beachhead on DFE's side of the Gate. Refugees from DFE flock to beachhead for protection and start forming town around JSDF base.

You know, when I read Mahouka, I kinda knew what I was getting into, but at least it wasn't blatantly obvious till the middle of the first arc with the right-wing nuttiness. This however... just reading the summary is enough to make me throw up my arms in exasperation. Flipping through the pages makes me kinda wish that instead of taking the original text and faithfully translating it, someone just wrote in whatever sounded coolest in the bubbles. That probably would have worked out better, kind of like how Darth and Droids made the Star Wars prequels much more bearable.

And they were attacked by that rabble that got vulcan'ed at some point. And then Bunny Queen tried to implicated them for the killing of that Japanese former slave girl? I think? I am sure glad that the writer took the time to explain how bad the elf's PSTD is, nothing else is really worth elaborating on.

It's pretty bad when the most understandable thing going on in a fantasy meets modern world series is that a huge titted elf girl has terrible PTSD and they spend chapters on planning to cure her. While checking back to see about the defensive fortification I actually noticed something cool The JSDF fantasy base is based off of the most advanced cannon-era fortress style ever designed, something that would make perfect sense to build when facing a society without explosive shell weapons. That's actually pretty cool and means the writer/artist thought about it and did some researched to see what the best fortress design would be, pentyne fucked around with this message at 17:57 on Dec 14, 2014 |

Star forts are very cool. I was born in Baltimore and spent a lot of time at Fort McHenry in my youth. The DFE is the 'big' empire. It seems like there are several other empires/kingdoms/wide spots in the road, but it's not really clear who/what/where they are.

The Empire rules the continent, other powers are vassals to it, like Eyepatch King. The whole reason the Empire sent the Vassal Kingdom army into Altus was so they could suffer comparable losses to what the Empire did at the start, neutering them. It's actually kind of clever, another thing wasted by its being in Gate.

KaneTW posted:Maybe Gate isn't all that bad???? As long as Elf Girl's PTSD isn't cured by noble Ranger Spec Ops Otaku's dick then yeah maybe. This series is actually fun when it's about the complexity of a fantasy world dealing with a modern one and less opposition party Diet members desperately trying to humiliate the JSDF during public hearings. If I could find the source material, I'd probably check it out to see, but literally everything I can read about it is isn;t good. This was probably the best quote I could find quote:It feels like you are reading Mein Kampf and complain about the depiction of Jews. I found a weird wiki-like summary and this couldn't say more. http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Gate_-_Thus_the_JSDF_Fought_There quote:Between 2006 and 2009, Gate was serialized online in a novel website called Arcadia. It's a right wing nationlist's fanfiction that got some attention and when formally published they dialed back the political rhetoric and had to completely redo an entire book, and when the manga was done they dialed back the political stuff even more. pentyne fucked around with this message at 19:00 on Dec 14, 2014 |

I wouldn't recommend looking too hard for stuff about the original novels, because you can tell the ending of the series by looking at the cover and title of the last book.

I don't remember how the Gate loli was depicted but if you're a normal person you just gloss over whatever sexualization you see and if you're a lolicon, good for you I guess? Saying that lolis are bad is like saying Monogatari is bad for having Shinobu (never mind that Shinobu is probably the most mature character despite her most common form being a child)

Yes, we do gloss over, that's why we keep reading this lovely manga, but we are talking about a character who gets orgasms when people are killed, and at one point she was about to have sex with the protagonist before they were interrupted by BLACK MAN SPEC OPS. I can deal with all the other crap, in fact I find it charming at times, but the series would have been ten times better without her.
