:siren:OldSchool RuneScape Permanent F2P Launches today!:siren:

OldSchool RuneScape News posted:

Permanent Free To Play
Permanent F2P is now here for Old School. Anyone and everyone can log on and play the F2P area of the game until their heart's content. Both new and existing accounts have access to F2P Old School so whether you are a new or old player you can hop on and play for free!

We're making some small changes to the F2P portion of the game to accompany the release of permanent F2P.

Yew trees, lobsters and wilderness fishing spots

Some time ago we removed the ability for F2P players to chop yew trees or fish lobsters. As we are introducing some additional limitations to F2P players, which will be detailed slightly further down in the news post, we have now made it possible for F2P players to chop yew trees and fish lobsters.

In addition to this, the dark crab fishing spots found in the wilderness will now act as tuna/lobster/swordfish fishing spots when logged into a F2P world.

Additional NPCs in and around Lumbridge

In order to help deal with the expected influx of players, we have increased the number of low level monsters that spawn in and around Lumbridge. We have also added some additional areas to kill chickens, cows, goblins and frogs. We hope that this will make it simpler for new players to find places to get training and to do so without overcrowding.

Skippy has returned

Skippy, the NPC that allows you to skip Tutorial Island, has now returned. This is to help deal with the large number of players that may end up on Tutorial Island and reduce any overcrowding.

Skippy will be removed from Tutorial Island at some point in the near future once Tutorial Island is slightly less active.

F2P account limits

For the first 24 hours of in-game time on a newly made F2P account players cannot trade items off their account. They can still receive items but they cannot trade their items away.

In addition to trading being restricted we have also restricted other ways of transferring items to prevent players circumventing the limits.

• If you drop an item manually, the item is visible only to you. It does not ever become visible to other players.
• If you die to a PKer, they will receive loot, however any stacks of items that you held when you died will be reduced to 1. For example, if you die with 1,000 coins the PKer that killed you will only receive 1.
• You cannot add items to a Trade offer or Duel offer. When the trade screen opens a message on the screen will tell you how long it will be until you can offer items.

We will be carefully monitoring the impact and effectiveness of these limitations over the release of F2P and will relax them if we find that we can keep on top of the bots, after the initial launch rush.

If your account ever becomes a member after this update, these restrictions will stop applying to you, and will not come back if you unsubscribe in future.

Starter kit tool

To help aid the community in F2P based events and helping give new players a great start to the game, we've given access to a spawner tool to some members of the community. Clan leaders, livestreamers and players focusing on hosting F2P events will be able to use this tool to spawn a limited number of starter kits each day for new or returning players during events.

The Well of Goodwill was also re-activated for OldSchool, and there's a 2nd anniversary event going on in Varrock currently with a cow suit available to participants. Live out your magical cattle-knight related video game fantasies!

The Grand Exchange is due out in the next two weeks, with Mod Ash putting in extra overtime to get the job done sooner, Achievement Diaries are set for an early release next month, but priority is now on getting bonds set up for OldSchool so they may be pushed back another week. The graphics work appears to be done, so what's left seems to be testing/setting up tasks in the interface.

:siren:OSBuddy is also having a free pro-features weekend currently!:siren:
OSBuddy is a feature-rich OldSchool client (think SwiftKit/SwiftSwitch from back in the day, but better) developed by the folks that brought us the popular RSBuddy botting client. Jagex-endorsed, OSBuddy is used by the vast majority of OldSchool players.

Now is an excellent time to check out OldSchool RuneScape as new players settle in, join us in the ScapeGoons chat channel today!

OldSchool News posted:

The Grand Exchange

The Grand Exchange is finally here. Head north-west of Varrock to get trading with your fellow Old School players.

We've kept everything about the Grand Exchange as close as possible to the version of the G.E. that most players will be familiar with (excluding a few additional features). In the coming weeks, we'll be polling a selection of your feedback requests. These might be extra buttons and features that we could adapt from RuneScape 3's G.E., or completely new ideas for Old School. So if there is an extra feature you'd really like to see, let us know.

Initial prices

The G.E. has initial prices for all items, largely taken from activity on the old Trading Post and from Zybez's excellent trading guide, among other sources. Players are free to ignore these prices completely, and to offer whatever they like. Over time, as you trade on the Exchange, the system will adjust its prices towards the true market values of the items. You should expect large changes in prices over the next few weeks; the Grand Exchange makes it much easier for buyers and sellers to find what they want, so there'll be less of a need to pay premium prices for obscure items. So if a guide price doesn't look right to you, please give it time to adjust.

Buy rate limit

The Grand Exchange has limits to the rate at which a player can buy items. These were introduced to discourage players from trying to mess around with the economy by monopolising critical items. Old School RuneScape has these limits too. For launch, we've deliberately kept them on the conservative side - with no limit on the prices players may offer, price manipulation is considerably easier here than it was in 2007. Over time we expect to be able to relax the limits.

Price manipulation

Players or groups of players should not attempt to manipulate the price of items through controlling their supply or demand. We are considering this to be a reportable offence under item scamming. We have multiple back-end systems that will allow us to identify manipulation proactively and will be keeping a very close eye on any attempts at price manipulation through the Grand Exchange.

Item sets

The Exchange clerks can pack items into sets, like the Trading Post used to do. For this update, we've added a few more sets to their list. There are a lot more we'd like to do in future updates, when time permits.

Grimy herbs

For our grimy herb graphic, we've currently preserved the Old School herb model, so the "cleaned" herbs look exactly like the identified herbs always did. However, we've had a few players saying they'd rather we changed the model to match what RuneScape 3's used over the years. If that's something you'd like, we'll put it in a poll forthwith.

In other news...

• Our 2nd birthday party has now come to an end. We've removed the leftover cake before it goes mouldy.
• Moved a Goblin near Lumbridge that spawned in a tree.
• Added some Guards to the roof of Varrock Palace.
• Increased the amount of Moss giants in Varrock sewers.

:woop: OldSchool has a Grand Exchange! :woop:

I'm not sure about pures being viable on the main game anymore, but just as a note, you'll want to train magic on EoC/Revolution instead of legacy if you're not using a staff that provides runes outright. Abilities on revolution have a good chance of not using up runes last time I checked, where legacy uses runes on every cast.

OldSchool Behind the Scenes posted:

March - The Month Ahead

February was a huge month for Old School. With both permanent F2P and the Grand Exchange released, it was one of our biggest months to date. March is going to be no different. Achievement Diaries, Membership Bonds and more... Let's get into the details of what the next month holds!

Achievement Diaries

Achievement Diaries have been in the works for quite some time now and we are finally approaching release. Development of the Achievement Diaries has come along leaps and bounds since February and we are aiming to have them out this Thursday. With 10 brand new diaries, this update is going to be a big one.

The Achievement Diaries update is sure to be one that gives you all something to aim for and a massive amount of content with which you can fill your time. With each diary you complete you will receive a reward offering you benefits in the area of the diary. You can read a full list of some of the benefits rewards offer in the previous Achievement Diary rewards dev blog.

Completing all diaries is a truly elite accomplishment and will allow you to get your hands on the Achievement Diary Cape. Completing all diaries will also trim your Quest Cape!

Let's not forget that along the way you'll also earn yourself various pieces of equipment. Shown below is the elite set of armour earned by completing all diaries.

Full List of Achievement diary Rewards

Membership Bonds

Membership bonds will allow you to buy membership for your account using in game gold pieces. Once membership bonds are released, you will be able to purchase them from other players or from the Grand Exchange.

Once you have a memberhsip bond you will be able to right-click it and select 'redeem' to add 14 days of membership to your account immediately. This allows you to extend your membership simply by playing Old School.

At the moment membership bonds can only be redeemed for membership. If the community want to use them for other things such as paying for Runefest we can add that, but it will need to pass a poll.

Once membership bonds are released you will be able to purchase one to give or sell to another player by clicking on the 'buy a bond' link on the main page and following the instruction to buy a bond from our website. You will then be able to give the bond to another player or sell it on the Grand Exchange.

Membership bonds should be launched mid-March. Watch for news on the website for more information.

Near miss poll content

We recently ran a near miss poll that covered a large amount of content. From wilderness boss pets to new clan wars game modes, the poll had a bit of everything. Later on in March we will see the first batch of content from the near miss poll coming to Old School.

Let's go over a few of the poll options that passed. Please note: it will likely take more than one update to get all of the content from the near miss poll in game.

Wilderness boss pets

When boss pets were originally polled, boss pet drops from the wilderness bosses did not pass. We added them to the near miss poll as we felt that the community now had a much better understanding of the impact that boss pets have and they passed with flying colours.

In the near future you will be able to get your hands on pets from Vet'ion, Venenatis, Callisto and Scorpia.

Skipping dialogue with the space bar

One of the most highly requested updates since the start of Old School has finally passed! At some point in the coming weeks we will be releasing the ability to skip through dialogue using the space bar and the ability to select from dialogue options with numbers on your keyboard.

This update is a simple one but simplifies a number of parts of the game. Definitely an update to look forward to.

Increasing poll requirements

We are going to be increasing the requirements to vote on a poll to 300 total level and 25 hours time played.

In order for these requirements to be enforced we are going to discontinue the ability to vote through the website poll module. This also means that it will not be possible to view polls through the website until after they are complete.

You can see a detailed explanation of all of the content included in the near miss poll by reading the developer blog and can see what passed over on the poll results page.

Easter 2015

At the end of March we will be releasing a brand new Easter event for Old School. As always with RuneScape holiday events, you can be sure that it will give you a reason to hop on and celebrate. We'll go into more detail on the Easter event closer to the release.

Be sure to follow Mod Ash on Twitter to see the inevitable behind the scenes sneak-peeks when they come.

The Old School Team

Last week saw the long-anticipated release of the OldSchool Grand Exhange and just before that, Permanent Free to Play servers. While the effects may be temporary, this has resulted in a steady incline in OldSchool players and both games are sustaining nearly-even player counts right now. At the time of this post's writing, OldSchool represents 47,182/96,354 (48.97%) of the total players online and that count has been teetering over the 50% point throughout the day.

Now is a great time to check out OldSchool RuneScape, with Bonds and the Achievement Diary expansion coming this month. There's also the temporary benefit of resources being dirt-cheap on the grand exchange. Wine making is almost 1gp/xp and the fastest cooking xp in the game right now! :stare:

Resizable mode is the next big project in the works, with the new continent, Zeah, actively being developed as a background project set for a late-summer release. Another Slayer update is rumoured to be in the works as well, potentially bringing new slayer monsters or drop table rebalances.

Not as many of us play OldSchool, but if you have membership on RS3 it also counts for OSRS. OSRS has stripped-down F2P servers available though if you're interested in those, and you can play two different accounts at once if you want to multilog on RS3 and OSRS at the same time. Depending on how much bonds end up costing, the efficiency of paying for membership with coins on either game might change back and forth in the coming months. Something to keep an eye on, anyways.

We have a clan chat for OldSchool, ScapeGoons. There's also a Steam group for both versions of RuneScape, El GoonSquad.

e: I just discovered AutoHotKey and oh my god it looks like the best thing ever for oldschool if you have the slightest bit of familiarity with scripting, does anyone know if using AHK for dropping logs/making darts can get you banned?

Achievement Diaries

To keep up the trend of big updates to Old School, we are bringing you 10 brand new achievement diaries as well as an elite addition to the Karamja achievement diary!

Completing these diaries will be no small feat with the elite diaries requiring both immensely high stats and a complete understanding of every part of Old School.

Achievement Diary Taskmasters

We have added a new NPC to act as a taskmaster for each diary. Being able to track these taskmasters down is important when starting diaries and claiming rewards. Below is a brief explanation of where each taskmaster can be found, their name and appearance.
  • Morytania - Le-sabre
To start the Morytania diary and claim your rewards once you've earned them, head just west of Canafis and track down Le-sabre.
  • Falador - Sir Rebral
The taskmaster for the Falador achievement diary, Sir Rebreal, can be found in the White Knights' Castle.
  • Wilderness - Lesser Fanatic
The Lesser Fanatic, the wilderness diary taskmaster, can be found in Edgeville nearby the bridge.
  • Varrock - Toby
Toby, the Varrock diary taskmaster, can be found in the centre of Varrock.
  • Fremennik - Thorodin
Thorodin, the Fremennik diary taskmaster, can be found just south of Relekka (slightly west of the house portal).
  • Kandarin - The 'Wedge'
The Kandarin diary taskmaster, The 'Wedge', can be found by the gates of Camelot.
  • Lumbridge & Draynor - Hatius Cosaintus
Hatius Consaintus, the Lumbridge & Draynor taskmaster, can be found looking quite fancy just outside of Lumbridge castle.
  • Desert - Jarr
The desert diary taskmaster, Jarr, can be found in the Shanty Pass.
  • Western Provinces - Elder gnome child
The taskmaster of the Wester Provinces diary, Elder gnome child, can be found just south of the Grand Tree.
  • Ardougne - Two-pints
Two-pints, the Ardougne diary taskmaster, can be found in the pub north of the castle in east Ardougne.
  • Karamja - Tzhaar-Mej
TzHaar-Mej, the Karamja elite diary taskmaster, can be found south of the gem shop in the Tzhaar area. You cannot go to Cap'n Izzy No-beard for the elite diary. You must go to TzHaar-Mej.

Diary rewards

For each Achievement Diary that you complete you will receive a number of rewards. With an easy, medium, hard and elite set of tasks for 10 different diaries, the number of rewards available with this update is huge. Because of this we are not able to go over every reward in this news post.

You can see the full list of rewards in the Achievement Diary rewards developer blog.

Here are a few of the many noteworthy diary rewards that we wanted to highlight.

Rewards across all diaries

The following rewards will be offered for all diaries across all regions:

Easy lamp: 2,500 Experience in any skill over level 30.
Medium lamp: 7,500 Experience in any skill over level 40.
Hard lamp: 15,000 Experience in any skill over level 50.
Elite lamp: 50,000 Experience in any skill over level 70.

You will receive these lamps in addition to the specifics rewards for each set of tasks on each diary.

Access to new red chinchompa hunting ground - Western Provinces diary - Hard reward

Upon completing the hard tasks for the Western Provinces diary you will be allowed access to a new red chinchompa hunting ground. This hunting area is sure to be peaceful and competition-free as only the top tier of hunters will be able to access it.

Access to the cooking guild bank - Varrock diary - Hard reward

Those of you that missed being able to hang out in the cooking guild bank will be pleased to see it return. Completing all hard tasks in the Varrock achievement diary will allow you access to the newly created bank.

Ability to use the Edgeville furnace - Varrock diary - Easy reward

After completing the easy tasks in the Varrock achievement diary you will be rewarded with access to the Edgeville furnace as well as a 10% chance of smelting 2 bars at once up to steel when using it.

With each additional set of Varrock tasks that you complete, the chance of smelting bars applies to an additional tier of bar. Completing the medium diary allows you to get the 10% chance when smelting mithril bars, hard allows you to get it for adamant and elite allows you to get it for runite.

Ardougne cloak - Ardougne diary - Easy to elite reward

The Ardougne cloaks have been a long standing favourite when it comes to achievement diary rewards. With each set of Ardougne achievement diary tasks completed a new Ardougne cloak will be unlocked.

The Ardougne cloak 4, the reward for completing the entire Ardougne achievement diary, is now the best-in-slot cape in Old School for a few stats. It offers the following stats:

Stab attack: +6
Slash attack: 0
Crush attack: 0
Magic attack: +6
Range attack: 0

Stab defence: +6
Slash defence: 0
Crush defence: 0
Magic defence: +6
Range defence: 0

Strength: 0
Prayer: +6

Other rewards

As previously mentioned, you can see the full list of achievement diary rewards by reading the Achievement Diary rewards developer blog. There are a huge number of benefits to exploring the game with achievement diaries, don't miss out!

Feedback & bugs

With such a massive update we are fully expecting, and hoping, to receive feedback on tweaks that we could make to improve the quality of this update. To make sure that we see everything that is said about the update, we have made a dedicated thread for you to send us your feedback and suggested tweaks.

In addition to general feedback, if you come across a bug it is crucial that you report it using the bug report form. Reporting it here will guarantee that it is seen and will allow us to fix it as soon as possible.

F2P Worlds & instanced bosses

To deal with the recent influx of new F2P players, we have temporarily converted 3 members worlds to F2P. Worlds 301, 326 and 335 are now F2P. These worlds will be changed back at some point next week after we have had a chance to set up additional F2P worlds.

One concern that a number of players had with reducing the number of members worlds was the inability to find an open world in which to kill the Kraken. To address this, a poll will being going live later on today offering access to an instanced Kraken cave. This will allow any number of players to kill the monster at any given time without having to be concerned about competition.

In other news...

• Loading times should no longer be increased after searching on the Grand Exchange.
• The achievement diary cape will not have an emote until next week.

The full list of requirements & rewards can be found here on the OSRS Wiki

While there's no Prifddinas and thus no elf city achievement diary, this update brings two unique task sets to OldSchool, the Wilderness and Western Province diaries, rewarding players with the Wilderness Sword and Western Banner. Most tasks have been changed from their RS3 counterparts, and overall I would say the requirements seem slightly higher for each OSRS task set. The OS team seems to be positioning the Achievement Cape as a sort of pseudo-completionist cape with the elite diary requirements, here's the full list of non-skill based requirements:

  • 153 kudos in Varrock Museum - Varrock
  • 1,000 Chompy kills - Western Province
  • Any complete void set - Western Province
  • Completed Barbarian Training - Fremennik
  • Level 5 in all Barbarian Assault roles - Fremennik
  • 1,300 Black Knight kills - Falador
  • Unlocked Bones to Peaches spell - Lumbridge
  • Unlocked all 3 God spells - Wilderness
  • Own a Fire cape - Karamja
  • Completed all quests - Lumbridge
  • Any skillcape - Falador
  • Mogre miniquest completed - Falador
  • 800,000 Nightmare Zone points - Ardougne
  • Completed Knight Waves Training Grounds - Kandarin
  • Kalphite Queen head - Desert

Mercifully, there's no "Play 5,000 games of Castle Wars" requirement, but the maxed out barbarian assault roles might be nearly as suicide-inspiring if you can't find a good team of coordinated players. I don't see too many players acquiring a complete elite diary armour set any time soon.

One of the senior moderators for OldSchool got dumpstered today. Dan "Ducky" Reach was formerly the mod overseeing Bug Abuse/Content Development. As it turns out, instead of fixing bugs, he was introducing them into the game.

Notably, players are now claiming that Reach was responsible for, and actively ignored reports of a bug allowing players to become invincible at the Corporeal Beast, enabling the creation of bots who farmed corp for the past three months unimpeded. Most of the players who knew of this and actively abused the glitch were high-ranking members of Reach's personal clan chat.

Reach was personally overseeing the development of the "Zeah" continent expansion scheduled for late this summer/early next year, which likely shelves the project until any already-developed code can be reviewed, if it doesn't scrap the idea entirely.

  • A three-month lockout on MTX items for 'elite' skills

Sounds great except adding the new 120 skills to the max cape, just make a proper 1-99 skill you hacks

That and they can gently caress right off with the idea of raising level caps to 120 without fixing the curve on old skills too. It's already insane enough to get 99 in most skills, and you know drat well they wouldn't bother implementing better training methods for a LONG time so as to avoid pissing off the "purists" who got 120 capes before raising the caps.

Also HOLY poo poo is the OSRS community awful.

Agreed :(

The economy is pretty messed up and getting worse with time too, the best example being wine making for cooking experience. It's the fastest way to get 99 cooking, and costs roughly 1gp/xp or less due to new drop tables having a stupid amount of noted grapes as a drop. Literally everything past level 35 cooking is invalidated as content/training methods, and the 99 is only 13m as a result. The skeletal wyvern drop table rework is pretty ridiculous too from what I hear, at one point it was like 600k+ per hour I think?

AFK training for melee at 70+ stats and magic from level 1 and up is convenient, but pretty game-breaking in its own way as well. Unfortunately fixing all of this wouldn't fix a bad community anyways, I'm just hoping for cross-game clan chat ASAP. (We had cross-game chat with FunOrb didn't we? Why is this taking so long?)

Has anyone used/can vouch for an OSRS -> RS3 coin swapping service? Far as I know it's still viable/not rulebreaking.

RuneScape: Still Crazy After All These Years

In update-related news, Mods Osbourne and Conor ran a little update poll for next year/late 2015 and it seemed largely quest focused. :woop: Maybe we'll see some old quest lines wrapped up finally!

As far as I know, there's no real alternative to the swapping clans. Maybe a few have good reputations, but I don't really trust them. It looks like going rates are ~6-7:1 for RS3 -> OSRS and ~1:5-6 for OSRS-RS3.

ed: beep boop transaction complete, insert cash register noises here, sleepingpizza/peg leg is a p. cool guy.

Now just get a toxic blowpipe, those things own own own on OSRS. Between that and void armour you can just blast through slayer levels like crazy (or lose it instantly pking).

Briefly, before they nerfed the aggro range on the dagannoths, it was like 600k+xp/hr. I think the abyss area is just a slightly slower variation of the old dags method nowadays.

Once you are all Christmassed out you can start looking forward for the launch of Zeah, the new continent on January 7th. In phase one, which is due in January, you will be able to explore the magnificent city of Great Kourend.

You must earn favour with the main Houses of the city to unlock their benefits, below are just some of the things you can look forward too.
  • Necromancy spellbook
  • Blast mining activity
  • The blood and soul rune altars
  • Tithe farming activity
  • New weapons and armour
  • A new race of Lizardmen to battle
    and much more.

OSRS Wiki posted:

Great Kourend is a city that was once torn to pieces by the 5 houses trying to rise to power and take control. A king rose and united these houses, bringing peace and order to the city.

That king is now dead, and once again, the 5 houses are struggling for power. Your choices in the city of Great Kourend help decide how much favour you earn with each house.

Earning favour with each house comes with different advantages in various different skills.

Oh and a little thing called Invention due to hit RuneScape proper at the end of the month

I'm back and forth between the two games, the invention grind to get my max cape back is killing my will to play RS3 lately.

third. age. on. the. wrong. game.
The amulet is 276m on RS3, that'd be 44.5m swapped to OSRS if I got it there instead. :negative:
