I'm really interested in that historically at least a minor recession happens every 10 years (approximately). So the next president probably won't be reelected due to being blamed on the economy.

If the next president is smart, then something Obama did will be blamed and it will be repeated enough that it becomes true whether it is or not.

Texas involves elections where the Democrats have to call themselves something else like Blue Dogs and prove how similar to Republicans they are in order to be viable. Except in Austin. Austin is weird. I love Austin.

Running away from an incumbent President works approximately never at the federal level. Most voters are going to by default gonna make a Hillary => Democrat => Obama, and if they perceive her running away from that, the Republicans will emphasize it. There's basically no way Clinton can avoid being tied to Obama - she can say she disagrees about X, Y, and Z, but she can't pretend the sitting President isn't of her Party.

This is one of the few enduring instances where people actually give respect to the office rather than to the officer. You hear political pundits badmouth opposing presidents as if they were literally Hitler and Satan at the same time, but within the same party there is a huge amount of political capital wrapped up in the outgoing president. There is pretty much no realistic scenario where anyone would ever want to throw the own-party outgoing president under the proverbial bus, because even without what this guy said about opponents seizing on an apparently split house you are basically throwing away a huge contribution to your war chest.

I am just ignorant of how these things are decided or analyzed and would like to learn about it. :shobon:

One of the debate questions for presidential candidates should be asking them to list in order which three countries they are most in favor of bombing at the time of asking. This should be the first question in the debate, and the moderator should be instructed to keep asking it until it is actually answered such that it cannot just be sidestepped unless the canidate(s) want to just forfeit all other debate time.

Really? You can make an independent judgement on Trump,Carlson etc? Whats the question? Are they actually fit for the presidency of the US and we're just a bunch of sneering liberals? No.

The vast majority of successful politicians do not seem like good people who any sane person would want to be in a position of power, so there's that I guess? Plenty of politicians on both sides seem horribly underqualified, especially when you look at who serves on various congressional committees. The thing you just said could easily be reversed and said by the other side. I'm personally going to end up voting for Hilary because she's the least evil option and that's what one does in a FPTP voting system, but that doesn't mean either side is more or less silly.

You shouldn't spit on volunteer veterans, but it's worth honestly recognizing what they are - people who were willing to kill (or support the killing of) people to promote US political interests in exchange for a paycheck. The POWs among them simply happened to get caught while trying to kill people. That doesn't seem like anything particularly worth of any sort of veneration, but to each their own, right?

That is certainly an interesting and accurate perspective. I remember hearing a speech in technical school (I was an electronics technician) designed to try to weed out anyone who was a conscientious objector (though by that time in training you'd have had plenty of time to quit already): "no matter what your job or your rank, the reason you are here and purpose of this organization is to kill people and break things because someone told you to". At the time it's easy to just shrug off as any other thing you have to listen to while waiting for liberty call, but it's true enough.

As long as they are content they will continue the path of New Democrat neoliberalism. This is not a demand for purity, this is 100% practical.
