yeah, it's weird. sorta like people pathologically hate advertising

there is no hope for humanity until we learn to think of marketing the way we think of eugenics today

every time adblock comes up some pearl-clutcher appears to remind us, oh god, won't someone please think of the poor multinational media conglomerates

normally i would post post post into oblivion about weird poo poo but all i need to say is:

if you aren't the customer, dont expect to get poo poo you like.

i don't know who you're talking to with all this but it's not me, because i don't make those complaints. most of the media i consume is free content generated by people who are making it because they want to. once in a while, if the stars align and TV produces something good, i'll pirate it and be happy about it, but i certainly don't expect it to happen

i would be loving overjoyed if the entire entertainment industry went bust because everyone decided they weren't going to pay for it anymore

but no RARR MARKETING BAD!!! it just RUINS OUR CULTURE

yes. glad we agree. hopefully one day in the future we will look back on polluting every medium with advertising with as much shame as we look back on dumping tetraethyl lead across the entire planet today

but the corporations! how will they pay for it all! shrieks pagancow, causing nearby windows and wine glasses to shatter

gently caress them, i don't care if they don't make things i like. i'm not complaining about a dearth of things i like, i'm complaining about the ads. enough people make things i do like, for free, to entertain me in perpetuity. and if they didn't, well gently caress, maybe i'd just have to not be constantly entertained for five minutes of my life, which i guess in america is considered inhumane treatment

advertising is cool because its completely unavoidable and teaches little girls that the onyl things that matter are being cute and getting boys to like u and pink barbie sparkle rainbow magic

please don't make these unsupportable claims about advertising ruining culture. everyone knows it doesn't do that. heck, advertising doesn't even work on me, because i'm so smart and i know better.

the idea that if we watch advertising then we will get shows we like is demonstrably false. stop saying it.

if you are not a neilsen family it makes no difference what you watch and if you watch the ads or not

of course cable/dish companies, netflix, amazon and tivo sell actual viewer data as well but nobody cares [because it might shake up a huge entrenched industry]

afaict, "old" advertising is just kind of whistling and looking off to the side and pretending "new" advertising, with all its actual quantifiable data, doesn't really exist

what's happened is that now that there's metrics that show that "new" advertising doesn't perform very well money is going back into "old" advertising [which probably performs identically poorly but since there's no way to prove it they'll be optimistic]

ahaha this makes so much sense

yeah those shows are only good because 1) the networks that make them want them to be good and 2) gently caress i don't even know what that one's supposed to mean

sure breaking bad may have been a great show... but think of all the technical problems it would have had if it tried to stretch into movie territory. they never would have been able to pull off sophisticated movie stuff like replacing Jesse with a talking CGI raccoon
