NEWEST VID: 09: bad memory What is this game? Oddworld Abe's Exoddus came out for the Playstation and PC in November 1998, exactly a year after Abe's Oddysee's release date. It continues the story of Abe, who just saved 99 mudokons and destroyed the industrial meat facility, Rupture Farms. Right when Abe thinks he has a chance to rest, the shaman Big Face pats him on the back a little too hard. While unconscious, Abe gets a vision, Rupture Farms isn't the only place where mudokons need help, and not even the realm of the dead is at peace... Who are you? I'm Metroixer! I'm a huge fan of the oddworld games, to an unhealthy degree. I've LPed Abe's Oddysee and Munch's Oddysee, and am very excited about this. Abe's Exoddus is actually my favorite oddworld game in the series. It may not have the same gloomy atmosphere that AO had, but it makes up for it with its extensive world building. Throughout this LP, you'll hear me nerd out about a bunch of ton of fun facts about this game's universe that probably don't matter. Most of these facts come from the Oddworld Artbook. What type of Let's Play is this? This is a 100% run, meaning I'll be saving all the mudokons. When I did Abe's Oddysee, I fiddled around with the idea of a Kill All run, but it fizzled out quickly. This time around, I'm debating between streaming myself playing through the game live and killing all the mudokons, or having co-commentators with me during that run. Time will tell. Do I need to know a lot about Oddworld to "get" this? In the first video I explain the mechanics to anyone who may be unfamiliar with the Oddworld games, but by and large my commentary will be under the assumption that you've at least seen Abe's Oddysee. It's not necessary to play through all of Oddysee to get Exoddus (in fact, the game even has its own little prologue video for newcomers (linked below)). That being said, if you have the time I recommend either playing through Oddysee or watching an LP of it. It's a good game!! You won't regret it!! Wow where are you getting all these cool concept art pics from? http://oddworldlibrary.net/archives/togg/ Videos 00: Prologue 01: bad ghosts 02: bad friends 03: bad eyes 04: bad worms 05: bad honor 06: bad burger 07: bad dog 08: bad gas 09: bad memory Metroixer fucked around with this message at 01:18 on Jan 18, 2015 |

01: Bad Ghosts quote:Shadows cast across a cylinder create dynamic curves. Designers found early in production that cylinders in the background are a good contrast against the abundance of linear platform elements that Abe had to interact with. The temple inside of Necrum is an example of the practical need for dynamic lighting in all the backgrounds. It also serves, by its size and its detail, to remind us of sophistication and pride lost and forgotten by modern Mudokons.

I've been waiting for this. To be honest, Necrum Mines is probably my favourite area of the current Oddworld line of games. I don't know quite what it is, whether its purely nostalgia from playing the demo a ton as a child or whether it's the sheer blue cavey atmosphere this place has, I always have time for a run through this place.

Hell of a secret to hide in the beginning. You need some dexterity to beat it, and the tutorial is only after that part.

I can't remember if Metroixer bought it up in the first video or not but Exoddus is FAR more forgiving in the secrets area than Oddysee ever was. I still can't believe they did that one thing in the Scrabanian temple with the whole slowly rising Scrab rope lift platform thing. Anyways, I won't go in to any more detail about it, because it'll be interesting to see who picks up on it.

Glad you included the prologue clip to help explain some things, I had a Playstation 1 during the release of the Abe games although I was far too terrified of them as a kid to ever play them, now I can see what I missed out on with your very informative Let's Play.

I remember this game. Way back when I first got a PS1, this was among the metric fuckton of games for it I got from my step-sister. Of course, being an especially-dumb 9-year-old, I barely had any idea what I was doing even after having read the hell out of the manual. I'm pretty sure I got completely stuck at some point and couldn't find out how to progress at all. Anyway, I didn't remember anything I saw in this video, so I guess I must have actually played it only once or twice before dropping it for the fighting game with the half-naked people who turned into nearly-naked furries. I'll be following this to see what I missed out on.

For what it's worth, you can get this game, and all the other Oddworld games in the Oddboxx collection which was released for PS3/Vita and probbaly PC and 360 too.

Wait, why was the train going into the mines already packed with bones? Stupid game oversight arghgh! In all seriousness, this game is great, I was much better at it than the first one. Incidentally. Holy crap, that's how you get that Mudoken that's between the gas clouds? I always did it that hard way and snuck him out while the slig would freak out over almost getting possessed. It was messy but it gets the job done, I always figured it was probably the wrong way to do it. Zeniel fucked around with this message at 16:17 on Nov 17, 2014 |

For what it's worth, I've had the oddboxx since it came out... 4 years ago I think? The 2D games are the exact same as their PC-CDROM versions, and if you didn't grow up with them like I did then the controls take some getting used to. Munch's Oddysee is easily the most janky at this point, with weird UI issues and controls being more stiff than they should be. Stranger's Wrath, by contrast, has gotten the most touching up. I think at this point you can't even get the non-HD release on steam, and unless you're on some weird integrated graphics card (which was my case for a long time) then you should be fine playing it. There are other things to not like as well, you'll see them in this new video. 02: bad friends quote:Flying sligs are the fast attack weapon of the Glukkon security forces. Their detailing is inspired by early armature attempts at flight and the need for their profile to read well on screen. Flying Sligs consider themselves to be the elite of the Slig forces - an attitude universal to hotshot pilots everywhere.

I don't know what to say. Necrum Mines just feels like video game home. They are some cool places later on in the game but I hate the next area and aren't too fond of the last area.

03: bad eyes quote:Adding insult to injury, blinded Mudokons are forced to dig the bones from their own ancestral burial grounds. The Glukkons are so greedy that the Mudokons are forced to work without sight for fear that it would lower their productivity if they found out that they had been exploiting their own burial grounds. This concept was spurred from real world historical accounts of using native peopels, whether willfully or unwittingly, to undermine and destroy the record and culture of their way of life.

Where did the jungle come from? Also I don't know of it is just me but the cutscenes are super quiet compared to your commentary and gameplay. Like so much so that I didn't hear anything that happened in the first few videos (I was watching in bed and it was to cold to get out from under the covers and change volume

Kuno posted:Where did the jungle come from? I agree its sort of weird the game starts in a desert, enters a burial site/mine and shoots you out into a jungle. The only other guess I could have is that the forest is on top of the mines? There is a screen or two in one of the next areas that looks sort of similar to the mines.

When I LP games that work that way, I manually increase the volume of the cutscenes to be audible in post-processing. I doubt anyone will complain. I think the issue is that cutscene audio is considered "music" even though it tends to have speech, and is controlled by the music volume control in most games.

04: bad worms quote:Necrum is the vast burial ground for many Mudokons. It is an oasis in the desert surrouned and protected by a giant stone structure reminiscent of a sarcophagus. It served as sacred final resting place for Mudokons long before Glukkons and Sligs arrive to exploit its contents. As Necrum was desecrated by the Glukkons and the bones of Mudokon ancestors were stolen to create SoulStorm Brew, life itself was drained from the once thriving oasis. The air became arid and hot with the encroaching desert on its walls. All that remains is decayed, crumbling rock and the sparse wilted remnants of a once healthy jungle. Early design influences were Mayan architecture and some of the sructures from the Paris catacombs. Later rock spires, reminiscent of bone or worm eaten wood, were added. I mentioned Mudombies in this video. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the concept art for them online. I might have to take a phone pic or something...

Metroixer, enjoyed your Abe's Odyssey LP and I'm glad to see you doing a good job with this one as well. It's great that you do good video presentation, and also extra content like the concept art and interesting facts like cut content (Mudombies) or backstory (I did not know about the Glukkon / Mudokon history either). It seems like you have a real appreciation for the series, and that makes your commentary feel very genuine. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this LP, and I hope you'll LP other Oddworld games as well! As a side note, I thought the setup you did for the first Kill All video in Odyssey was great and hilarious, though I understand it might not have held up to doing all episodes like that. I do think the Save All runs do a good job of showing off everything the game has to offer, so a Kill All run doesn't seem necessary - but best of luck with it if you do decide to do it!

If you are feeling sadistic, and there's a room of Depressed Mudokens, slap one of them, and he'll eventually slap himself to death, which sets off a chain reaction of all the other Depressed Mudokens who will also slap themselves to death, this also applies to Angry Mudokens, hit one, and he lashes out, and if he hits another guy, he'll lash out, and it will carry on until one of them dies. Then he turns Depressed, and the cycle continues.

I'll accept no alternative! Here's a video. 05: bad honor quote:Areas indigenous to Scrabs and Paramites were established in Exoddus and known as the Mudomo and Mudanchee Vaults. These vaults are adjacent to Necrum. Originally created in Vykkers Labs to be the perfect Glukkon pet, Fleeches are cute as babies then turn into bloodthirsty monsters and are routinely flushed down toilets throughout Oddworld. Mudombies are Mudokon Spirits who cannot rest because their beloved burial grounds of Necrum are being strip-mined by the Glukkons In a nutshell, they are hulking, idiot, zombie Mudokons.
