Literally the only actual purpose amiibos serve (from a "making money for Nintendo" point of view, which is the only view that matters to the people making them) is to capitalize on the Disney Infinity/Skylanders market of interactive figurines. Nintendo looked at those games, saw the poo poo-zillions of dollars they were making, and said "we have lots of well-branded characters that we could make into figures, lets get in on that!".

Every actual "function" of the amiibos is an afterthought after selling a gimmick product to children and capitalizing on a fad market. And this is coming from someone who actually bought one.

The DLC comparison only really works if Activision released a DLC key that unlocked a gun in CoD and a song in Rock Band and a new outfit in Destiny or something. It's an ugly rollout early on (Nintendo is great at those) but over time they hopefully still offer some value beyond whatever DLC you're comparing it to for Smash alone.

The problem is that it literally is just DLC being sold in the form of a figure. Smash is the only game so far that actually uses the amiibos as what they're being advertised as; a figure that comes alive in a game. Every other game that "amiibos work with" literally just unlocks some content that would have been DLC otherwise and then is never used again (a weapon in Hyrule Warriors and costumes in MK8). We don't know how they're going to work with future games, but among them Animal Crossing U is the only one I can think of that could use them in some meaningful way. Having Wii Fit Trainer or Ness move into your Animal Crossing town would be awesome, but it could also just as easily unlock a piece of furniture that looks like the figure and that's it. There's no way Captain Toad or Yoshi's Wooly World are going to use amiibos as anything other than a content unlock.

Nintendo is advertising, modeling, and pricing these figures to compete with Skylanders/Disney Infinity, and that is leading people to assume (incorrectly) that Nintendo games are going to feature that kind of "living figurine" gameplay, when they don't and aren't going to in the future. If Nintendo released a beat-em-up in that style and the figures were used for that, it would be one thing, but as it stands now amiibos only exist to take advantage of that temporary market, and nothing on the horizon looks like it's going to change that.

Begby posted:

My kids have skylanders and want more, they want that stupid inifinity poo poo after seeing the store display. I got them each an amiibo, they expressly told me they do not want more of them, thats how lame they are. Nintendo totally failed to capitalize on this stupid fad.

I think with skylanders the functionality is not an afterthought, thats why those are more successful.

Bingo. It sounds like your kids understand the value of that style of gameplay, and that's great, but it also sounds like you put in your research into how these things work and whether or not they are worth the investment. Most parents aren't like that unfortunately, and there is going to be a wave of angry parents on December 26th who are trying to return amiibos because they thought it would let their kid put Mario in Skylanders.

Perhaps some of that is people not wanting the figures but wanting the content, and without an alternative means to unlock it for free (though so far there's nothing worth unlocking anyway) they feel ripped off.

It's exactly this. Nintendo advertised them to be more than they are. If they were just $13 figures no one would complain about them sure, but no one would buy them either. Amiibos have gotten a ton of advertisement and press from Nintendo and other sources, and now people are disappointed with the final product because they don't live up to the hype. They are shoddily constructed, significantly worse looking than advertised, and don't do much of anything in any game that isn't Smash, even though they are being advertised right along side it.

Honestly people would be less mad if they were advertised as just a Smash thing, because then people would know exactly what they were getting, but Nintendo keeps pushing this idea of them "working in different games in different ways", but they don't, they just unlock stuff.

Make a custom Mario with either KO healer or Lifesteal (or both) and lots of attack. Pick giant battles and horde battles in the beginning (they are fast and low risk) but after round 12 or so pick 1v1 fights and horde battles. Free for alls take too long, team battles stick you with useless teammates so you basically have to fight alone, and NEVER do giant battles without teammates, they will gently caress you up 1v1.

This is the method I've been using and I can get to battle 18 or so pretty consistently. The biggest hurdle is time.

Correct. Tier lists don't matter unless it's an older game with a LOT of well documented play time from a variety of high level players (think Melee or MvC2 levels of play).

Also additional reminder that the graphic posted before is a tournament result list, not a tier list. All it really does is highlight which characters are easiest to abuse/difficult to counter. Someone who's low on that list could have some powerful exploit that just hasn't been discovered yet.

His down tilt is great for approach
His down smash is great for kills
His up tilt is great for kills
Both his B and Side B are good for range
His throws are all excellent
His f-air is like Melee Marth's f-air
His b-air is solid too.

He's similar to Luigi, in that he only works well in certain ways, and you have to avoid using his bad moves (like down B).

Also, I am so loving pumped to get this for Xmas. I've poured hundreds of hours into Melee (skipped Brawl) and just watching this game be played has me so hype. Speaking of which, for those who've also played a lot of Melee, how does this compare in terms of control, or really just in general? I'd love some comparisons.

Short answer: You can't. Nintendo got blindsided by the demand for these things and there just aren't enough out there for everyone.

Long Answer: Keep your eyes peeled here, Reddit, Smashboards, and a few other places. They do occasionally become available online or at retailers, but they go quick. A week or two ago Gamestop had them in stock online, but they were gone in 2 hours. If you do manage to find one at Gamestop/Best Buy/Target/Wal-Mart/etc. it'll be retail price ($20).

Edit: And yeah, it's slower than Melee, but just because it's slower doesn't mean that combos aren't possible or that things can't get crazy as poo poo.

It was the same in Melee.

People even say that the Sheik/Sheik ditto matchup isn't even in Sheik's favor, since Sheik benefits greatly from her own fallspeed and weight, to the point where tilt combos are even easier than normal.

Edit: Oh, I forgot Lucario actually has a favorable matchup against Sheik due to his aura making him just able to attrition her out.

Yeah, I hate fighting Lucario because, as awesome as Sheik is, she can't kill until a high percent (compared to other top characters) so you are guaranteed to have to deal with a Lucario who has a ton of aura and rage.

So, an interesting thing occurred.

You know how the first blade of Robin's up+B is a down spike? Well...the other day in For Glory I was fighting a Dr. Mario and edge guarding him pretty fiercely. His attempts to return to the edge got very predictable so I decided to just end it and dunk him. Much to my surprise, right as I used my up+B, he used his cape, which caused him to float harmlessly to the edge and me to be spiked, ending the game. I was confused as hell for a moment when the game ended and I saw him dangling from the edge and me exploding at the bottom of the screen.

If he reflects an attack that's shooting down, shouldn't it be reflected...up? I don't know, it just looked extremely strange. The power of the spike must have been amplified by the reflect, because I loving rocketed downward.

I can honestly say that's the first time I've seen a down spike reflected. I never would have guessed that it would work that way.

This is something I've noticed with other things too. The "reflected" physics for vertical projectiles isn't super consistent. For example, if you're Mega Man, and launch an up air at a Fox who reflects it, the tornado comes straight back down, like you expect it would, but if you use a reflector on Olimar's up smash, the Pikmin completes its "arc" of going up and back down as normal, but suddenly the hitbox hurts you, so you seemingly take damage and knockback from nothing.

-Some moron opened an emergency exit, triggering a fire alarm and forcing everyone to evacuate.
-Fire department shows up, turns off the alarm, people start to come back in.
-Fire department starts looking into capacity and safety issues, calls the police.
-Police department comes in, condemns both the Smash 4 and Melee rooms for safety due to a section of collapsed parking garage caused by the snow.
-Smashers told to return to their hotel rooms until everything gets sorted out, new estimated start time at Noon.

This on top of the fact that the hotel dropped the ball on the internet hookups for the streamers so everyone is streaming on 4G setups right now. It's a mess down there.

Do tournament organizers actually plan to allow custom moves in the future? Between that and ongoing patching (even if infrequent), I think it could end up a very balanced and diverse game. I would also love to see the Mii fighters be allowed in competitive play cause they look pretty cool.

Short answer: We'd love to, but it's a stretch right now.

Long answer: The single biggest problem is getting enough fully unlocked consoles for large, APEX scale tournaments. There is currently no way to shortcut the long process of getting 400+ RNG unlocks on a WiiU. We don't even have the "pay cash money to unlock everything" option that some other fighters have (see: BlazBlue). Right now the best option is looking to be Amazing Ampharos' Custom Moveset Project, which involves:

Getting a fully unlocked 3DS version
Creating the top 6 movesets for every character (as voted on by the community) with standardized naming
Transferring every one of those sets to each WiiU that will be used (takes about 15 mins per WiiU, and only once)

This makes it so that for 95% of people, the WiiU is set up with the set you'll use, and for the last 5% they'll have to transfer moves from their own 3DS version (it isn't too much of a stretch to assume that someone who is dead set on using a unique build owns a 3DS with that build unlocked). The upside of this is that there are cheat devices that can be used to unlock all custom moves on a 3DS version, and it only takes 1 fully unlocked 3DS to set up any number of WiiUs. The downside is that this is an additional equipment and setup time requirement, and that it doesn't actually unlock the moves on the WiiU.

The fastest method would be if the WiiU also had all the moves unlocked, so players with unique movesets didn't need to connect a 3DS, but that will take either A) Time, B) Nintendo giving us a "pay $5 to unlock all custom moves" DLC, or C) Someone to crack the WiiU security and enable save sharing.

VGBC is really being scummy as hell about this. They're in a legal grey area but so is streaming itself, as Nintendo has tried to prove in the past. Worse still, VGBC got popular because of S@W and various Project M streams in the first place. I'd feel better about this if he just said it was because of the money rather than some legal excuse.

It is about money though. I guarantee that they are working on some Melee/Sm4sh partnership with Nintendo, who would be donating a small fortune in consoles/games/venues/publicity. In exchange though, Nintendo can't be directly associated with anything PM related for legal reasons. If nothing else the shareholders would have a fit with Nintendo supporting a mod that could very easily be seen as "costing them money".

It's honestly in PMs best interest to not pull any attention from Nintendo. Even if Nintendo upper management has no problem with PM they could easily be forced to take action against it by their lawyers for legal reasons or their shareholders for financial ones.
