Yeah, that's the problem with them, not catamarans. They were super impatient and weren't very good at finding good wind.

Remember, they'd never done their classes and learned anything about sail trim or use of different headsails.

It's not just that; they figured some of that stuff out along the way. You can chalk a lot of it up to them believing the fastest way between two points on the map is the route with the least miles regardless of how much faster they'd arrive at their destination if they'd just be willing to beat into the wind.

If I want to arrive at my destination as soon as I can should I take the 142mi road that takes 2h52m or the 160mi route that takes 2h42m?
Bumfuzzle: Take the 142mi route.

I can see why other cruisers would get so up in arms about their blog. A few hours on a Sunfish would have done them a lot of good methinks.

Just want to mention there's a pretty big difference between towing capacity limits on the same vehicle in the EU and in the US. We measure things differently... and assign towing capacity differently. Just like we measure Octane differently and you can't compare Octane ratings in the US to those in the EU without busting out a calculator. (No, the gas isn't "worse" in the US, get out your calculator)

It's something you have to keep in mind on a forum like this with so, so many EU folks: US versions of the same vehicle "tow less weight" with the US regulations despite having the same towing capacity.

I'm not sure how much of a difference the individual vehicles can haul, but in the US a lot of vehicles are certified to haul less weight than the same vehicle in the EU. So, in the US, everything get's hauled by trucks, even if a sedan would do.

This is one of those articles where you really need to scroll down and read the related posts. They tell the stories from both of the racer's perspectives in separate posts.

How does this get fixed? Do they have to make room for tugs, or do they pull it from either shore? Something else?

Nope. They've been going at it with tugs for a while now. It's right and proper stuck. They've already tried pulling it from shore. They're going to need a lot more tugs and land based tracked vehicles. The ship has one of those bulbous noses and people are thinking that got jammed under the side of the canal.

Okay water goons, do we know of anyone that does or has made adapter plates for electric motors or just made adapter plates in general?

That sort of info is only now becoming very rarely available for mass produced automobiles that are extremely popular for EV conversations using extremely popular electric motors. Like if you want to bolt a Curtis motor to a Beetle, you can buy a plate. The above sentences are a complicated way to say "learn SolidWorks because you need something custom made for your application." Designing a flat plate with holes in the right places is probably one of the simpler things you'll need to solve.

Lifepo4 fucks.

Ayup. Break the cost down per-year: Lifepo4 lasts 2-3x as many years. Some live aboard folks replace house bank every 2-3 years, so extending that to 5-6 years saves money. Plus, the labled AH capacity is the actual capacity: lead acid's actual useable power is only 50% of what it says on the sticker. Plus, if you have a high power load like a fridge it won't dip the voltage, so it runs more efficiently and draws less amps.

Never discharging under 20% doubles the charge cycles. Never charging over 80% also doubles the charge cycles. Store the batteries at 60% if you can and the battery bank will last for many, many years.
