Nethack was my first roguelike and I still play it a few times a month. I've never ascended, but I've gotten close a couple times. I just don't have the patience to polypile and break the game

DoomRL has difficulty modes and you could probably beat Not So Rough in a few hours.

I only play DooMRL because I like DooM. Nethack was boring as poo poo. Most of the time I get stuck on a floor with no actual route to the next floor. Thanks randomly generated dungeons!  Rougelikes aren't for everyone. Doesn't mean you have to go around and say "Rougelikes suck".
