That style of animation bugs me sometimes today, but in general the overall quality level of modern cartoons is way loving higher than it was in the 90s. It's funny you mention Ed, Edd and Eddy as the last cartoon to use cel animation, because WOW that show was a piece of poo poo.

Also that's the show's opening, the episodes themselves would rarely have that level of animation in them. Not that I don't think it looked much better before; the way Simpsons has been visually homogenized over the years is definitely a major detractor for me. It wasn't a show you watched for animation quality, but there was still a lot of character to everything.

Yeah, modern Simpsons is not atrocious, it's just such a massive shadow of what it once was that it can be hard to watch, and everything about it is so lazy and safe. You're right that some of those sitcoms are a whole other level of bad, but on that same token, literally no one is losing out by not having watched Simpsons for the past 15 years.
