Taciturn Tactician posted:A better example of re-imagining characters without them becoming near-unrecognisable or bizarre looking. it's really insulting that with images like these, making a comparatively ethnic character inoffensive and "normal" is to make them a white american/european/caucasian with darker skin. anything of the other culture is deemed intolerable and removed

Captain Invictus posted:I forget the term for those types of practice sketches when an artist is working on a specific style over and over, but I fuckin' love'em. I think I've got some more, but if you want some more fun, look up Disney face sketches(Tangled is the most available one iirc), Disney has its artists draw characters in every facial pose to make sure the design works in any situation, and some of the results are incredible. These aren't fanart but they are great. The third from the top left in the first one has been my steam avatar for ages, it's so good. I almost went with the top right Rapunzel one, it is also supremely good Personally im not a fan of the cal arts style; being a subcategory of animation styles, the character design follows certain rules for how they're built and, ultimately, how they look. They become more rigid that way. Ever notice how they've just recycled the same Disney princess for the last 5 years?

Captain Invictus posted:It also shows that cuphead characters look awful when done in other cartoon styles, apparently. more likely that the other artists dont have as strong a grasp on basic drawing/construction skills as the original animator. also because there is degeneration from style to style along the years; since a "style" is almost always influenced by a previous style, people start copying copies and not doing what the best artists did; drawing from life and interpreting it their own way. For example: If this guy was to draw Cuphead characters, they would look fantastic. It is because he's a good artist with a grasp on life drawing so strong he can mix it with his own expressiveness. Not to say there aren't design faults in Cuphead characters. Cuphead himself has such a small amount of negative space on his face it's ridiculous, and it's because his eyes are way too big. Speaking of hyperrealism, it is a plague on modern design. Here are examples of bad hyperrealistic DBZ art. Look for these things: 1. Grotesque muscular detail 2. Very detailed lips 3. Unnecessary, cluttered wrinkles 4. Loss of character and appeal of design 5. Looks like Gollum or an Orc from Lord of the Rings End of Shoelace has a new favorite as of 23:56 on Oct 11, 2017 |

I will also give you three examples of well done hyperrealistic DBZ art. Hyperrealism means that things can look BETTER than real. It is an artform which reinterprets things from life exactly one-to-one; the concept gets confused when something that is not real is introduced.
