It's fascinating, and Berryman appeared in a segment on how everything from skin to teeth to organs relies on folding instructions from a specific gene, and the lack of those instructions led to his ectodermal dysplasia — he was born with no hair, no teeth, no nails, missing large bits of flesh, no sweat glands, and some other things. Some people with ectodermal dysplasia develop cone- or peg-shaped teeth.

The grandchild of Deep Dream — aka “the program that made everything into eyes” — is the Generative Adversarial Network, or GAN, a program that gathers basic parameters from existing images and makes its own from scratch. Results so far are... unsettling. Clocks! Not too terrible; kinda like what they look like in dreams.   People shopping, a shopping cart, and a streetcar:    Now here’s where it goes a bit awry, when you ask it for furry mammals:               What about spiders? Those can’t get much creepier. I posted before about the creepy glory of neural-network-made pictures, and now we can talk about Tumblr’s NSFW filter, open_nsfw, which loves to see dicks in everything and make dicks itself. Here are “neutral scenes,” judged neither SFW or NSFW:   And the SFW scenes:    And now, what open_nsfw considers porn (linked for vaguely genitalia-shaped things):  Dickginabutt Boobs? Balls? Who knows? A butt dripping into a butt, foreverNow, the problems arise when open_nsfw sees scenes like these as equally pornographic as the dicks ‘n butts. These are also considered NSFW so I’ll link them, but you’ll be disappointed. I guess if you squint it’s dicks? Maybe a ghost dick?So a lot of art and photos on Tumblr are getting flagged for removal because the old Yahoo neural network they use to catch it can see dicks in everything from a pastoral pasture scene to a fractal to a photo of you and your bald friend. And this is what they’re relying on while pornbots are currently running rampant. As a final trick, you can ask open_nsfw to show you a particular scene, at both SFW and NSFW extremes. Here’s “concert” set for SFW:  And at maximum NSFW, it makes its own giant dick singer with glowing eyes: Does it hold the mic to the urethra?See more data here, (https://open_nsfw.gitlab.io/) but don’t click at work because the datasets have the stuff just right there for the world to see. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are getting pretty good at creating people (source images from Flickr on the right, successive generations of composites to the left): (click for big) But cats, still not so much.      And so many available cat images have macro text, that the software accepts the floating white shapes with black outlines as part of the visual definition of CAT

There’s nothing like sweeping a writhing, buzzing pile away from the front doormat because people keep tracking half-mayflies onto the carpet. They also got into the air ducts and kept dropping from the ceiling at random intervals. They don’t bite or sting but they do block windows.

Ick at flying bitey ants. We also get “love bugs”, so named because they mate and stay stuck together until they die, 2-3 days later. They don’t bite, but they do swarm over buildings, cars, and people, and their guts eat away at paint. Local car washes will offer special heated bug gut cleaner when it’s love bug season.

Probably less if you’re traveling via windborne web and there’s no traffic. No no no no no.
