Here to recommend The Machine, a low-budget British sci fi/noir thriller about artificial intelligence. (Free on Netflix now.) In the previous thread someone described it as "proof you don't need a kajillion dollars to make a compelling sci fi film," and I wholeheartedly agree. If you like Terminator or Blade Runner this is definitely for you. It features great performances and a killer synth soundtrack right out of its source material.
