I gotta say, I didn't think I'd like Orphan Black but man it was super good. It's a BBC America production with season one on Amazon Prime. It was actually good enough that I went and paid to watch the second season right away because I just couldn't wait for them to put it up on Prime (and it was very much worth it).

Edit: I just want to add that even though at first glance the show seems like your typical mistaken identity/one actress plays two parts type of thing it ramps up fairly quickly into creepy clone mindfuck territory with the one actress playing like 6 different characters that all feel like genuinely different people, often interacting with each other absolutely seamlessly. The way they put it all together is a technical masterpiece in my opinion, and I don't know how she manages it but Tatyana Maslany (the lead actress) does an absolutely amazing job at holding all of it together. I can't recommend it enough, it's really really good.

Another show that I felt was good but somewhat underrated is BBC America's "Copper", which only ran for two seasons. Both are up on Netflix now and if you're the type of person who's into historical New York City type stuff then you'll probably like it. The main plot is about an Irish NYC Detective named Kevin Corcoran returning from the Civil War only to find his daughter dead, his wife missing and no leads or information to be found anywhere. It's kind of like Law and Order: 5 Points, with a lot more police brutality and era appropriate racism (against Blacks and Irish). I'm a huge NYC history buff, especially the 5 Points/Gangs of New York type of poo poo, and I found Copper to be really well done in terms of characters/set pieces/stories of that type. Even aside from all that it's just a good story that drew me in and held my attention for the whole run of the show. The subject matter is appropriately seedy without being too disturbing, and the actors all seem enthusiastic about their roles. Donal Logue joins the cast partway through season one and kills it as a slimy Tammany Hall politician/fixer. And even though the main lead tends to come off as a bit altruistic for the time period he never really gets overbearing with it.

Basically, if you liked Gangs of New York (and for all of it's cheesy flaws I think I'm one of the few who really liked it) then you'll like Copper. Of course YMMV, but at least give it a shot.

Live and Let Die and A View To A Kill are both pretty bizarre, but still worth watching.

Live and Let Die is basically a blaxpolitation movie involving James Bond, so it's the only Bond film to involve the word "honky" as well as a car chase featuring a pimpmobile. A View to a Kill was the last film Roger Moore did, and it's pretty obvious throughout the movie that he was too old (57) for the part, especially since he was older than the mother of the actress playing the love interest. If you can get past the geriatric Bond and a pretty ridiculous chase sequence, it's a decent movie, and Christopher Walken is really good as a psycopathic microchip mogul.

Man, if you have any affection for 'Live and Let Die' don't read the book. I decided to read all the Bond books a couple of years back and goddamn. I mean, I know the whole 'British author from the mid century' thing is basically the viewpoint to remember when reading the Bond books but holy poo poo man.

Also, 'Bored to Death' is great and everyone should watch it.

Yeah, I read Casino Royale and the next couple and was pretty :catstare: at just how sociopathic and misogynistic Bond is. It gave me a new respect fore the Daniel Craig bond, because it is very much the closest to the real character that any actor has come. The books are pretty much Mad Men, if the guys all had literal licenses to kill.

I saw Casino Royale before I read the book and just assumed that whole 'wicker seat with the bottom cut out' torture scene was a modern addition.

It wasn't. Ian Fleming really loving loved torturing characters.

I'll second this, along with the show it used to be paired with Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23. As long as you can get past the name, it's one of the funniest and most original sitcoms that's aired in years. It's basically about a girl moving into an apartment with a sociopath who's best friends with James Vanderbeek playing a bizarre version of himself.

It got screwed by its network during its original run, with all of its episodes being run completely out of order. It's all on Netflix now, though, including a good number of unaired episodes.

I gotta third (or fourth, whatever) this one. I expected it to be terrible but gave it a shot out of boredom (and well, honestly, Krysten Ritter. I mean, come on) and it became one of my favorite sitcoms. It's much funnier than I ever expected and I recommend it to everyone. I never knew James Vanderbeek could be that funny, and he and Krysten Ritter have great comedic energy together. I really got the feeling that everyone involved in that show was having a great time making it, and that kind of thing makes a huge difference in whether something is really good or just plain good.

Check out the first two seasons of The Americans on Amazon Prime.. it's really good.

I have to second that recommendation; I think "The Americans" is one of the best shows currently on the air and if you like spy stories then you'll definitely like this one. It does a really good job of evoking the feelings of paranoia along with the threat of imminent war that I remember pervading the air when I was a kid in the early 80s. It's also drat good at sucking you into the tense moments and keeping you on the edge of your seat. It's pretty much everything that ABC's "The Assets" (which was completely terrible) tried and failed to be. The action sequences and fight scenes are great too, and I never knew how much I wanted to see Keri Russell kick a guy's head through the wall until I saw it happen in season 1. Go watch it now! Amazon Prime has seasons 1&2 available so you can catch up for season 3 which just started a couple of weeks ago.

E: Amazon Prime also has "The Dog", a documentary about the guy that inspired "Dog Day Afternoon", John Wojtowicz. It also has a bunch of stuff about the early days of the gay rights movement, which Wojtowicz was pretty heavily involved with. The whole story is really interesting and definitely worth a watch.

Hannibal is coming to Latin American Netflix, so all Latino goons that haven't seen the series you should watch it as soon as it's up. Also, there's no news if it's only the first season, or both first and second.

I would think it's probably going to be both seasons since the 3rd is starting up in June. I've noticed that with most series the latest season goes up on Netflix shortly before the next season starts airing. At least for network shows in the US, anyway. It may be different for Latin America.

It's quite weird how things work over here. Sometimes we get all the seasons, sometimes not. For example Grimm has been up in Netflix Mexico for years but they haven't uploaded the third season even if it already aired on the US. I don't know if it also has to do with if the blu ray is out or not.

Part of it probably has to do with the DVD release dates, but for a country like Mexico it may also involve how fast they get the localized versions finished. So if they don't have a Latin American Spanish version of Grimm Season 3 finished, they might not put it up. I can't speak for other networks but for where I work I know that the international versions are prepped and sent out for dubbing pretty soon after air, and the LAS versions are usually the first ones we get back for distribution (usually followed shortly by the French, Castillian, German and Portuguese versions if they make them). I don't work for NBC though, so I can't tell you what the deal with Grimm is.

Yeah, I used to just dismiss Legit but gave it a shot after a friend recommended it and really liked it. Aside from the raunchiness it also has a lot of heart. I can't really think of anything else that treats disabled characters the way that show did; whenever Rodney would show up you knew poo poo was gonna be good.

How so, do you mind if I ask? I've never seen the show, but my wife teaches a college course on Disability and Media, so we're always looking for decent pop culture examples of characters with disabilities (ideally portrayed in positive or at least "normal" ways).

It's kind of hard to explain, but for the most part they had a number of developmentally disabled folks as secondary characters and did a really good job of portraying them as just another dude as opposed to highlighting them because of their disability (or worse, having that be the point of the character or the joke itself). Whenever they would show up they'd just be another part of the gang. It reminded me a bit of hanging out with my cousin, and the way it just isn't really an issue in day to day life if that makes any sense.

I could be way off base, of course, and there may be something offensive there that I missed, so anyone can feel free to correct me if there is.

So it turns out "Pain and Gain" is funny and good. I'm not sure if it's still on Netflix (and I can't log in to check at the moment since I'm at work), but if it is I definitely recommend it. I had assumed it was just some standard Michael Bay crap, but someone told me it was actually a comedy so I gave it a shot and really enjoyed it. I think it might be on Amazon Prime as well, so give it a shot if you have a couple of hours to kill and want some laughs.

I thought they put a bunch of stuff up on Hulu, so that may be why it's no longer part of prime. I haven't been on there in a little while though, so I'm not sure how much of each show is there.

"The Americans" is really good, and the first couple of seasons are Amazon Prime. In fact I'd say it's probably one of the best shows of the last few years. Everyone on the show is excellent (especially Keri Russell), and they do a great job of capturing the whole 80s Cold War aesthetic. Granted my opinion is a little biased since its currently one of my favorites, but if you like suspenseful spy type stuff then you'll definitely enjoy it.

I didn't have any problems with the pacing in season 1 either, but I'm easy to please. I'm only 4 eps into season 2 but it's really good so far; it actually feels like a natural progression from where they were in season 1 instead of just more of the same with some new characters thrown in. I also like that Punisher is being depicted as an unhinged lunatic instead of a cool badass antihero.
