The average is 5.5? I thought it was 4. This is very unsettling.
Procedurally Generated Survival Games, like Rust, The Forest, and uh... a bunch of others now exist in some state of intermediate assembly and while I like the concept that they're aiming for, are any of them yet worth playing?

I wouldn't know because I'm not one to risk biting down on a poo poo sandwich but maybe one of you risked it?

having done this i can tell you its about as fun as it sounds

but really just by law of averages you'd think one of these had managed to be fun by now

lets see what a sampling of steam reviews thinks

quote:

[...] I met some other people that were enslaved then we tryed to over take them but our small militia dident stand a chance against them and they re-enslaved us and this time made us "take off your trousers" then we worked for them for the rest of eternity.

Hmm virtual slavery, seems promising! But for the sake of being both fair and balanced

quote:

You will spend 20 hours building, gathering.
In 5 mins someone will ruin all your work.
Always and with anyone.

No surprises there! Any other gems for us steam reviews?

♥♥♥♥ early access games. Early access is a scam and anyone itching to buy into early access games should not do it, even if the games cycle is at a low point, which I think is what spawned this abomination in the first place.

early access games like those remind me of the "total overhaul" mod projects that would disappoint me as a childe. they might stop development on them someday but most are never gonna be "finished". also playing a game from alpha and waiting on incremental improvements to come out sucks anyway. ignore early access with me, all.

i agree. theres a lot of cool ideas and as a kid you always imagine these totally intractable survival games like: WHAT IF I CAN STEAL EVERYTHING AND FORT UP IN A COSTCO?? COOL! But they're always half baked and never gunna be fully finished.

that said OP, i (probably stupidly) picked up 7 Days to Die since a friend was begging me to play and it's not... entirely bad. it has a lot of things that are already implented and work pretty well (destructabile terrain, almost everything can be broken down and used for something like you would expect it to do, decent thirst/hunger/health/stamina system that isn't frustrating or boring work, and building forts or underground bases are pretty rad).

but holy mother of god, the hitboxes and actual combat in this is atrocious. if they ever can get it so enemies react to getting hit, don't lag like poo poo and hit you even though you're several feet apart, then it would be a pretty fun game.

i have a friend whos still carrying a torch for day z. he bought me a copy a few weeks ago so i could see how much it had improved since the free mod days, i guess.. we ran around doing nothing for three hours just like we did in the free mod. i felt bad but i had to tell him that the game was terrible and there was still nothing to do in it. this same friend bought whatever $50 option that super-scam day z ripoff had. early access must be stopped.

I really wanted to play Rust but it's Early Access and if it ever comes out it will be dead by then.

I'm pretty interested in The Long Dark and Firewatch too but they're not quite the same.

the Forest was ok i thought. i ran towards the natives on my first try cause i thought "people! oh, they can help!" and instead in some ooga-booga white man nightmare fashion, they bashed my head in

it's Survival, and it's procedurally generated...

I guess it counts, except that it's a completed game that is very good, unlike the rest of the genre. Though it's still getting expansions and updates so I guess "complete" isn't accurate.

At first I thought Early Access games were a neat concept, but now I realized it's a basically a scam. You're basically paying them to beta test, and by the time the game gets fully released, you're already sick of playing it, and who knows when it'll get fully released.

yeah basically. it's really easy to burn out early in the alpha/beta stages. I've avoided grim dawn though I own because I just want to play it once it's actually complete. I stupidly played starbound and man what a lovely beta. i'm not even interested in playing it at launch now--that's how bad and boring it was.

It's also like this as a developer. you get real sick fast of trying every little change and cataloging every bug that comes up, ad nausea and all you ever see is how much further you need to go. hell, the only thing I ever did development for was a dumb custom map called Squadron TD on sc2 and I didn't want to even play it after awhile and felt relieved when I stopped.

It's not surprising that most of the EA developers also have limited full development experience yet have ton of initial vision and ambitions. And that comes crashing down when they burn out of the development process and see how much more its gunna cost and take in shear man hours to even come close to their initial ambitions.. so of course they take the money, quit and give up the gently caress up and then go on a long duration to backpack around europe and crash in italy for a few months to start another EA game a year later.
