I mainly listen to WHM over other bad movie podcasts because of the impressions that can quickly slide into improv comedy madness. Like Tom Berenger's character in The Substitute participating in Mortal Kombat.Cacator posted:For a different take on the lovely movie podcast, check out " Worst Idea Of All Time Podcast" run by a couple of New Zealanders who decide to watch Grown Ups 2 every week for a year which is my idea of hell. I'm only a few episodes in but it doesn't take them long to start to lose it. There is a really great article about the production of Street Fighter Movie, it was an amazing disaster in every aspect http://www.polygon.com/features/2014/3/10/5451014/street-fighter-the-movie-what-went-wrong quote:Van Damme is shooting guns, causing all sorts of mayhem, and he shouts to Chun-Li and Balrog: "Go, go, I'll catch you later." Here's what Van Damme said the first time: "Go, go, I'll catch you later — cut, cut, cut!" quote:"I come from poverty," says Chapa, "and here I was making more money than I ever made in my whole life, plus the place was so cheap you could get a massage for $10. We became massage addicts, getting a massage every hour. We were working hard and our bodies were pushed to the extreme." quote:Today, in the digital era of filmmaking, directors can view footage on large high-definition screens off set as soon as it's shot, and even as it's shot on mini monitors on set. But in the 1990s, directors were forced to wait a day, sometimes two, to view processed film. De Souza, already unhappy with what he calls the "more provincial egos of the stunt people," discovered too late that the game's special moves weren't being incorporated into the brawls filmed by Picerni. the best Street Fighter movie was made by Jackie Chan anyway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvkvPmHRI7E

I can understand not wanting to do movies that other podcasts have done, but they've crossed over a lot. Uwe Boll movies are so dire, there is barely there even to make fun of. Maybe Bloodrayne as a fodder for impressions. And the "in on a joke" period movies (from Postal onwards) are even worse.

LORD OF BOOTY posted:It's been argued that the movies revel in their violence too much for this to be the case, but I don't feel this is true, because the way the violence is depicted isn't really fun. It's brutal, painful, and uncomfortable to watch, not cool and stylish, and as much as people rag on the aesthetic of the films, it really helps sell this. Oh come on, not stylish? The traps are used on the posters, and WHM joke how Jigsaw is a steampunk nerd. Using a dozen cuts and filters to depict falling into a pool of used syringes IS trying to make it look cool and entertaining. LORD OF BOOTY posted:When the movies show people agreeing with Jigsaw, you're not supposed to think they're correct; you're supposed to examine your own beliefs, because a disturbing number of people pretty much think Jigsaw is right. There's no meaningful difference beyond theatrics between how Jigsaw treats people and how the American prison system does. people love knowing that an enormous number of people is getting tortured and mutilated and degraded in the real world every second, providing them with an illusion of safety - that criticism would be falling on deaf ears for the next century at least. same goes for the Purge - it is the next step in power fantasy horror and god knows what will come after. people get a thrill out of seeing random people on screen being punished based on grievances - just like the more conservative audiences of 70s and 80s loved seeing overly sexual teens get merked. Intent, whether the movie endorses something or not, is not important, but the cultural moment that the series dominated and exploited, is. talking about Saw and 00s torture porn is more interesting than watching any of those movies now

They missed that Millar and J G Jones deliberately based main characters on Eminem and Halle Berry likenesses in the comic. That kind of brazen starfuckery brought the world Samuel L. Fury but no luck here. Also, as per tradition, a reminder that Mark Millar is an incredibly stupid guy quote:“While down at the shops, I saw a black guy with [Down syndrome]. Amazing, as this is something my friends and I had queried for years. Is DS genetically localized to Caucasians. Yes, I’m now about to waste 20 mins phoning a couple of my pals to say so, but now me appetite has been whet and I’m curious if there are any Chinese or Indian Downs Syndrome people out there. Given that Scotland is almost entirely white my chances of seeing one here are slim, but I’m certainly on the look out now.” quote:“I pitched this to DC for a laugh years back. The idea was that, like Death of Superman, we had Rape of Wonder Woman; a twenty-two page rape scene that opened up into a gatefold at the end just like Superman did.”
