Is Podemos further to the left than IU? It just seems weird for people to be freaking out about a supposed Chavista when there's a literal communist party.

Not really , but they have a real shot to win an election a charismatic leader and internal unity something that izquierda unida has sorely lacked in the past 10 years or so since Anguita retired.Basically people didn't freak out before with Izquierda Unida because they didn't have a shot of winning anything and whenever reached a position of power they suddenly turned right.

The major problem Podemos has is the economic one , this is probably the first election in 19 years that economic matters are primordial to the electorate (unemployment and debt) both PP and the Socialistas have really uninspired economic programs that basically are more of the same faux-austerity bullshit we have endured for the past 7 years.

Podemos probed with a few ideas (rejection of debt , nationalization of a bunch of industries including energy and petroleum )and every economic journo started to scream like their pants were on fire , plus the members of the party in charge of the economy are kind of dorky-creepy.

In the leader part Iglesias murders Mariano Rajoy something not really difficult because every body hates him even the people in his own party.Sánchez might a superficially adequate candidate (he certainly looks the part) , but he's an appointed leader and he'll be murdered in a debate.

Interesting thread. Could you do a writeup on the Catalonia independence issue? (and the other regional issues)

I'm Scottish, and the nationalist movement, at least the activists, tied themselves up pretty heavily with the Catalan independence movement during the recent independence referendum. Are Spanish people getting annoyed by noisy Scottish nationalists mouthing off on Catalan independence?

Nobody really cares about Scottish or Irish nationalists going round. The biggest reaction would be curiosity or amusement if they are wearing a kilt.

Also the catalonian nationalist issue (what a title) is a massive clusterfuck from a fairly simple issue that mixes culture ,the architecture of the current state and their institutions , recent and far reaching history.

Catalan politics are divided in Ciu (convergčncia i unió)ERC (Esquerra Republicana de catalunya),PSC (partit Socialista de Catalunya),IpC (Iniciativa per Catalunya).CiU is the party of the catalonian petit bourgeois , they want all the benefits of an eventual catalan estate with none of the drawbacks .They basically want a country for themselves to rule as they see fit.For decades they played the part of independent agitators and when the plebs became unruly they would came back crying to Madrid asking for help crushing the poors, rinse and repeat constantly. When Pujol came into power late 80's early 90's a deal was struck between the most rancid right wing in madrid and CiU.Pujol would act as a bulwark against independence in exchange of judicial immunity for their multiple corrupt deals and client webs.

This "deal" stood till Artur Más into power. He had the unpleasant job of cutting every thing he could in the budget (cuts far deeper than any other region in Spain) which was and is and extremely unpalatable move in an extremely left wing region so he went against the historic trend of his own party and went full blown in the independence train.

Off course not only Mŕs has been fueling this flame .The rejection by the supreme court of the new fundamental law of Catalunya voted by the people by the supreme court (an extremely conservative an politicised institution),the massive crisis for the past seven years and the almost traitorous plans of the central government ,the massive corruption cases that keep appearing out of thin air and the unsolved issues of the dictatorship ,the transition and austerity fatigue have spiralled the situation out of Más control.
The other catalonian players are only happy and smiling. The chickens are coming home to roost one after another.

Meritorious mention to the central government and the castilian political class .A reactionary and corrupt institution hell bent in destroying any alternative centres of power in the country, locked into a XVII century view of the Spanish state (one country, one language, all ruled from the capitol whether you like it or not) incapable of accepting any moderate change.

This independence issue has only exposed the cracks of the so called "Model Transition" for what it really was:An effort to change everything so nothing changes.

The actual islands are completley useless, just a bunch of rocks with seaguls, but they give Portugal the largest maritime economic exclusive zone in the EU. The size of the zone is always highlighted by Portuguese politicians as a matter of pride(size issues), and of cultural heritage(land of sailors). Yet Portugal has the same rules in fishing and the likes as everyone else in the EU regardless of sea size, so the zone is really a burden on public finances and Navy budget, which is how you end up with the state purchasing two broken submarines from crooked German military sub-contractors. Though nobody is going to admit that.

At least you had the good sense of buying broken german equipment instead of setting out to design your own broken submarines.Protip for those adventurous and industrious types, the weight of the welding must be accounted for in the final design.

To illustrate the amount of communication between society and government , the employment ministers has never been interview by the press in the past two years and one year in the case of the vice president. This is not the most shameful thing tho , the primer minister don Mariano Rajoy gave a press conference through a plasma TV to a room full of reporters. No questions to a tv were allowed. The last part is unusual because usually every press conference has a round of agreed upon questions with the leading right wing garbage. And speaking of the devil:

it's hard for me to judge since I'm not over there and my friends are of a similar political leaning, but is the anti-Podemos propaganda carrying much weight at all with the general public? because no one I know is buying any of that poo poo.

It Depends on the angle they decide to pursuit. The most effective and realist one is that Vinçenc Navarro hasn't drawn a really thorough economic plan and some of the biggest selling points like auditing the debt and the creation of a public lending institution are pure fantasy.
This carries weigh with a lot of people already burnt after 7 years of pure poo poo but then again the alternative is PP or PSOE.Inside this criticism you can find guys like Jose Carlos Diez (economist) that doesn't like the numbers behind the plan or Daniel DeLacalle who is a massive hypocrite(but really successful) talking about how podemos is going to organize a purge if they win , or the parasites that suck the blood of the people , privatize , privatize.

The most fringe stuff is the Iran and Venezuela ties of Iglesias. You see Iglesias has travelled extensively through South America and actually talked about with and about the indigenous movements and other left wing parties for example he went to Bolivia and he had a meeting with Evo Morales , I think he saw Correa in Honduras ? , he definitely has talked about Hugo Chávez and Maduro in Venezuela.

Iglesias is a massive communist with all the letters so he actually supports a lot of the work done by these governments in SA and that's a big no no for certain business sector that want nothing more than a neo imperialism. When Cristina Kirchner nationalized Repsol some of this motherfuckers wanted to go all Conquistador and start lobbing missiles in Buenos Aire's direction (Side note:Repsol is barely an Spanish company any more and has for years paid taxes in other countries).

All these things are condensed in a narrative that says that Iglesias is a Manchurian candidate paid by Iran and Venezuela(brilliantly mixing the most hated things by Spaniards in general:Muslims and South American Indians it only lacks gypsies for a full racist bingo) in a mission to steal your pension and your granddaughter's virginity. The disintegration of the Venezuelan economy fuels some of this poo poo.

The most important thing is the frequency and the constant new accusations.Every week there is a new bullet point making the rounds in the right wing media that gets echoes in the more serious newspapers then it disappears when nothing is found. The problem is the cycle is creating a substrate of pure lies in the mind of the voters, my own mother will talk about some of this garbage and doesn't know where it comes from only that podemos is a Boliviarian Iranian monster.

The old dirty secret seems to be Urdangarín dumped his old (and by the time hot as gently caress) girlfriend, cancelled their wedding and cut any communication with her family that saw him as almost a son.
All to marry Christina who at the time was madly in love with him and chasing him through Barcelona.
Then he made a seamless transition from the world of handball to the business establishment ending with a million euro a year position in telefonica that relocated him to DC.

I am going to write a little about Bankia which looks and feels like a massive cancerous tumour and a reflection of everything that is bad and corrupt about this country. So let's star from the beginning, I might play fast and loose with the rules.

Let's travel back in time to the glorious 2001.Espańa va bien.Aznar is glowing with a new complete majority in parlament basically allowing him to as he pleases in the country.

Unemployment dramatically decreased in the 5 previous years going from 20% to 14-12%, privatizations filled the coffers of the country and the euro was coming.
This would change completely the landscape of the spanish banking system forever.

In 2001 the banking sector had a public system of lending and saving known as "cajas de ahorro".These were public entities therefore under control of elected official to a regional level completely shielded from the regular private banks. For example banks could be brought by cajas but not vice versa.

When the 1 of january rolled out the Euro became the very first european currency .That lowered interest rates for every country that was part of it allowing countries to finance themselves with artificially low interest rates. The expectation was that German procedures would be accepted as the standard (lol) and other countries would become as serious as germany was.

A second effect was the influx of German savings flowing through Frankfurt to the south of Europe. Finally ECB was lowering the interest rates due to the German Recession. This cheap money flooded the markets.Back then the mediterranean economy was expanding fast so this money was delicious and cheap so everybody was financing gigantic projects cheaply.

This is the moment the property bubble begins to form.Cajas being regional banks controlled by regional politics were specifically sensible to large real state development..These projects brought money and jobs to their electors and friends.
Places that should not be developed were sold as prime real state.Garbage sold at a price of gold. All financed by cajas with foreign money.

This goes on for 6 more glorious years till the 2007 credit crisis that compounded with our own property bubble popping.

Now cajas are filled with massive defaulting credits that cannot be unloaded, plenty of worthless real state and riddled with awful management. So one after another they start to crumble.

Playing loose with the timeline centenary banking institutions with long traditions of taking care of their customers collapse overnight. Not after taking everything they can of their most vulnerable customers (pensioneers) selling them complex financial instruments .

So now what? So now Bankia. You bundle up all the garbage of the system into one big place that would administrate whatever healthy parts are left and ....

Now you have created a massive systemic risk inside an already fragile banking system riddled with massive amounts of risky credits, falling property prices, and rising unemployment.

So that's it for now.

I used to casually follow Spanish politics since I have a lot of family living there (entirely in Galicia), but I haven't had time over the past couple of years due to a new job. Now I'm curious - why has PSOE's support fallen off so badly despite PP's scandals, and why has the left rallied around Podemos instead? It seemed like Zapatero's government was fairly left-wing, but has the party shifted back towards the middle in the meantime?

Well PSOE it's seen as a more friendly face to the same establishment that rules the country. On a policy level they betray any leftist thought they have the moment they sniff power as a general rule and Rubalcaba completely murdered any chance they had past elections. Before they had advantage of being the only mainstream leftist party left capable of facing PP in the elections.
