There's some research that suggests that concepts like expressing and understanding locations relative to landmarks ("left-of-[category]/right-of-[category]", as opposed to purely spatial landmarks like "short wall/long walk") is tied to the symbolic/linguistic reasoning that, so far as we know, is still unique to Humanity. In particular, humans perform no better than rats at locating items with respect to landmarks (a blue wall) when they are asked to "verbally shadow" speech, effectively tying up the linguistic center of the brain.
