I'm not aware of any innovations makerbot has made in the last few years (multi head? switched feeds?) so w/e RIP Also last night I went to a startup/entrepreneur meat&greet, talked to a marketer/sales wannabe engineer/coder was super enthused about 3d printing, he just bought his first one, this is *the future* like the *internet* when it first started! so I found a prototype specialist and dragged him over to help me piss all over the marketer's dreams with facts. a good night. I'm guessing that Noisebridge gets bailed out by the Dedicated Members canvassing SFC nerds who are making six figures. I'm surprised none of them have showed up and said "can we please lock out the homeless people, in exchange for money" so they can accumulate decent tools and have a decent space. seems like the vocal minority is all for unfettered bullshit. -- I'm trying to kick my local hackerspace into gear: they've an organization in place that has been around three years, already have 501c3 (which is the hardest thing for engineer-ish people to get done, usually) and yet still doesn't have a physical space, or even regular board meetings (as mandated by IRS rules). It's also headed up by art graduates who want to jam LEDs into stuff. in a way it's a lot like noisebridge, but with less human poo poo and fewer wealthy locals to beg from.

Stupid poo poo No One Needs & Terrible Ideas Hackathon did we already go over how suspiciously transparent this is? project: TMI machine. Tweets whenever someone sits on toilet https://twitter.com/tmimachine. apparently the longest anyone has ever sat has been 21 seconds, and the toilet has been used less than a dozen times. either that or someone thought their privacy was being violated and shat all over the machine. which is more likely d'ya think?

Unrelated.. I dropped by NYC resistor tonight, they gave me some free stuff and let me build a thing (an actively cooled smoking pipe ) They are v cool people. Their power structure is "every paying member is a board member" and it doesn't go to poo poo because new members must be unanimously approved. Unlike noise bridge they have actual useful tools and don't even lock their member storage cabinets.

I went to NYC resistor again and they were supes cool. One of them helpfully pointed out the thing I made looked like a pipe bomb and help me make it look like Not That. Also a cute girl gave me her number. Their secret: to become a member, a quorum of members must unanimously approve of the person. Roughly eight non members and yours truly outnumbered members rather steeply, yet none of us poo poo on anything. I know it seems far fetched but this really happened.

Cocoa Crispies posted:"tech shop" is the one where you have to learn to use a piece of equipment first and the stuff mostly works and isn't covered with human feces (or at least more than everything else in SF) right? Every space has insurance that requires classes of some kind before using anything that grinds, cuts, or burns. Tech Shops allegedly have people who will help you make your dreams come true, whatever that is. It's like retail for workspaces. Spaces usually charge a monthly fee for access. Tech Shops are about 150/mo. Most spaces tend to be 20-50/mo. This is a pretty good barrier to crazy people. Despite this, conspiracy theorists & perpetual energy morons still show up sometimes
