Probably because it was a really hard time for people and because there was not a lot of experience with that stuff yet. I don't know about magnets, but there was this one guy who owned a pyramid hat. He regularly met with other people like him in some field and they tried to concentrate cosmic energy with these hats.  The best part is, that he worked as an engineer before the collapse.Also, what about mold? Americans don't believe in mold anymore?
