When your platform accounts for 70% of a market, maybe you feel a responsibility to take a hands-off approach and not deny someone access on the basis of something as nebulous as a Facebook like.

The devs counted on it for PR but it worked better than they ever hoped for, due to their detractors playing into their hands every step of the way and some fortuitous timing with Gamergate (which they weren't even aware of).
