Torokasi posted:The way the puzzle worked was that one screen switched all six letters, one switched all letters except the first, one switched letters 3-6, one 4-6, one 5 and 6, and the last one switched the last letter. So you could go through and lock each one in in order, if you could be bothered to remember which ones started where. You don't even have to remember which ones are which. They'll always switch their letters one at a time. So if you go to one you've already set, you can just cycle it back to where it was, and it'll cycle every other letter back to where they were, too. That's how it got solved in the LP video, pretty much. You just work from left to right, and if the letter was already correct, you just go though a whole cycle to set it back to what it was before, and you'll get though pretty quickly.

If I skip over a screen that people want to see let me know and I can post stills. There are probably going to be more situations where I don't want to die and I'm hitting buttons as rapidly as possible like with those clues at the end.

I love how the static in this game is, well, static. How hard could it be to animate? Is the game so unoptimized that it would have tanked the framerate?

We're back for more rings! More excitement! More glitches! The second ride was uneventful but the third ride makes up for that by completely baffling me. Part 6 (Third Ride): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynLSfO8SPlU

You nailed that "protect the skaters" level. That was one of the ones that I failed over and over before I realized that the car was an enemy. And the one for clearing the pedestrian's path around the edge of a building gets everyone at least once, because they don't tell you to move the boxes and the game engine is wonderful and flawless. Here's more thought than this game probably deserves: The ride stages are Superman following the trail of the next villain. They always start right where the previous segment of the game left off and end right at the next segment of other gameplay. The rings are clues that some supervillain has gone by - footprints, scraps of lost paper blowing in the wind, damaged buildings and streets, and whatever else Superman would notice. The minigames are traps that the villains set up to delay Superman - they know he can't resist saving someone in trouble. The timer represents the fact that some clues in the trail won't last forever and the people in the traps will die if Superman doesn't hurry. And if you miss too many of the clues, the trail goes cold and you can no longer follow it. I can't wait for the next level. More than any other level, I think it defines the Superman 64 experience.

I think what happened is by standing in front of the pedestrian, it counted as blocking her path, since she kinda judders against you, and the game figured "welp she must have run into an obstacle, that's a fail." She seems to stop the same way later at the box, same animation too.

Does anyone know whether the 'ride' levels all use the same map or not?

Carbon dioxide posted:Does anyone know whether the 'ride' levels all use the same map or not? They do. If you fly around in 'practice' mode you can explore the whole city and see all the buildings that the ride sections go around and end up in. There are also a few weird little places that look like they were probably intended to be something at some point but were never used.

The Brainiac bossfight is great because if you picked up the heat vision you can kill him before getting close enough to trigger his AI, basically ending the fight before it starts.

I love how the lady just pushes Superman out of the way as he fails the minigame. Clearly Lex programmed her to be sassy as hell.

I remember there were these 4 weird buildings that were connected and had this kind of neat central courtyard area, that I always thought was pretty cool. Then there are the weird tower things out in the water which you may have flown past in the ring section. I think there may have been this kind of neat factory thing, too? Sorry my info is so shotty. I played this game when it was pretty new, so it's been about a dozen years since I last saw any of it. I'd have to actually go dig out my cartage and see if I could get my N64 working if I wanted to remind myself what this stuff was.

I suspect it's scripted to fail if she takes any damage at all (since the game expects the only damage to be from bullets/explosions), and smacking her with the box or Superman's chest counted as a bit of damage.

For everyone looking forward to this level I hope this doesn't disappoint. I had no god drat clue what to do, so enjoy 15 minutes of laughing at physics, signs, getting lost and stumbling onto things! It's the Superman way. Oh my. We may be waiting a very long time for the next video if it's going to be a complete run of the level. My only advice is that you should make sure you don't run out of recording space on whatever device you record to. You will not want to play this level again if you lose the footage.

Maybe I just have the same brain tumor as the designer, but so far this does look like a game that got screwed by system limitations more than anything else... I mean, no excusing the glitches, but it seems like your biggest problem is you can't just stop and look around for poo poo cause the world ends about five feet away.

Even then, that doesn't explain why the controls to deactivate the mysterious force field were hidden 30 feet up a wall in a little cubbyhole that you literally couldn't possibly access without jetpack or very long ladder.

System limitations don't really explain how poorly the game transitions between control schemes and how Superman handles on the ground. It's so hard to transition quickly and when you are walking he just plods. It's the most frustrating part of the game to me.

You have the kind of patience that saints would envy. This is a ridiculous project, and I can't think of anyone better for it. My favourite part of Superman 64's legacy is that the UK N64 magazine introduced a regular feature called Lex Luthor's "Solve My Maze!" which would be a baffling set of images or some kind of puzzle. I don't have access to my old mags currently, but if I ever get hold of them I'm happy to post what I find!

In the last video I said I would be doing an edited video to finish this level, then after looking at the strategy guide's objectives I realized I had only finished 1/5th of the level. So I decided to make another blind attempt, well blind except for checking what I had to do next. So here is another attempt since so many people want to see the process of beating this game. Note, I do not complete the level in this video! Part 8 (The Warehouse Second Attempt): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44Q6R2qGnqw

This level is the reason why I came to love the ring stages. They are mercifully forgiving and very enjoyable by comparison. Going back to the beginning of the previous ring segment is nothing compared to going back to the start of the level because Lois got killed 25 minutes in.

Superman is a god send because SD video is so much smaller. But who knows, by the things I've heard of the final level I might be here awhile.

I figured they were platforms you needed to stick the boxes on as soon as you walked in because a) the bottoms looked a bit transparent and b) it's Superman 64 of course they're going to have something stupid like that. Lois teleporting backwards and summoning a shadow if you're not close enough was a bit surprising but still very Superman 64 (especially the no checkpoints). The giant robots were fun though, I hope we see more of them. Also hoping to see if this mission can top an escort mission from hell.

Lois has some incredible AI. She stands idly in a hail of bullets just like I imagine a real woman would. But I'll never get tired of Superman's best attack being flying face-first into guys. Or the noise they make.
