Has anyone seen really poor GPS performance on a Nexus 5 recently?

My fiancee's GPS as of a couple of weeks ago has had huge delays in updating where she is (i.e. she opened Maps just now and it is showing her at a location she was at on Sunday evening). We use G+ location sharing pretty regularly, so we know it worked well up until a couple of weeks ago. It's probably a coincidence, but it started happening when we were at a location with terrible service for a couple of days. Obviously I wouldn't expect location to be precise while there, but it has remained awful ever since. I'm having her download GPS status and clear GPS data like that, but if that doesn't work, does she have to do a full wipe? Is this a known issue?

EDIT: If she opens Maps and sits there for a long time, it usually (but not always) eventually updates to the right place, but it is much longer than the usual GPS lock acquire time (several minutes, even on a very clear day). Background location services seem universally awful though, unless she actually triggers a manual update.

Nexus 5 has always been prone to GPS issues. Make sure the back is fully snapped on. Then download the GPS Test app and see if it's getting satellite lock when outside.

There's also a "fix" that involves sticking a piece of cardboard in there too keep the antenna connected. Google it. I'm on mobile otherwise I'd link you.

The thing is, you don't need to turn on/off most of that poo poo. Having Bluetooth or NFC on 24/7 is barely a blip on the battery meter. The important toggles are included in stock Android and none of the extraneous ones. (Samsung's 29 different toggles are just that, extraneous)

It's possible that the tower near you is undergoing repairs and based on this happening to other people, it seems even more likely.

Is dual SIM necessary? Should I not worry about it, and there is a better procedure?
Unlimited data? Um what are you talking about? That won't likely happen but you can easily get several GB and use hotel/hostel WiFi which is commonplace.

If going for only a few weeks either go without service or just pick up a China Unicom sim card. Get a VPN and backup pics to Dropbox or G+ over WiFi and VPN when you're back at the hotel.

You don't need anything special when it comes to phones, China Unicom supports the same 3G standards and frequencies as the rest of the world.

Until then, I'll look into VPNs. Thanks for the info.

1. You'll get the international roaming in China no problem, but it's only edge speeds, which is sufficient enough but not pleasant. But might not be a great signal or any at all if you're way out in the countryside (likely you won't be).

2. You might not need the VPN for this. I think the TMo roaming actually jumps the wall for you, lemme check on that.

Typically they are international versions sold by online importers. The warranty is only applicable in the country for which the device was intended. Thus it would be cost prohibitive to send your phone to the originating warranty repair center.

http://mobilesyrup.com/2015/10/06/blackberry-priv-can-shoot-4k-video-and-will-come-with-blackberry-safeguard/

Maybe the one thing that might make me still consider this Blackberry is their "security" angle if it's legit. But if you look at the screenshot in that article, it's just a loving gauge that tells you if you have Dev options enabled, device encryption turned on, and a screen lock. I suppose it's convenient if you just don't know about poo poo like that but it really doesn't offer any sort of extra security if you already have all that poo poo enabled/disabled anyway.

Security related, as I'm hovering over the checkout button for this gargantuan 6P, is that apparently Huawei sold lovely routers a few years back and other chinese items like irons & kettles come pre-hacked from the factory. An example is an iron with an unadvertised WiFi chip in it that scanned for open networks and then dialed back to China for...profit? Probably old news ( 2012/2013 ) but I'd never heard of it. This is probably just :911: and everything is made in China anyway, and a lot of poo poo has changed in 3 years.

"The most controversial routers come from Chinese telecom companies ZTE and Huawei. The House Intelligence Committee released a report in October 2012 warning American businesses to avoid the two companies due to security risks. Similar warnings against Huawei, in particular, have been upheld by governments around the world, including in Taiwan and Australia.

“China is known to be the major perpetrator of cyber espionage, and Huawei and ZTE failed to alleviate serious concerns throughout this important investigation,” said Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, in a press release. “American businesses should use other vendors.”

Huawei has launched a public relations campaign to fire back, yet independent research has only justified concerns. Just prior to the report from the House Intelligence Committee, in July 2012, security researchers at hacker conference Defcon uncovered critical, and extremely basic, vulnerabilities in Huawei routers.

“This stuff is distrusting,” Dan Kaminsky, a well-known security researcher, told International Data Group News Service. “If I were to teach someone from scratch how to write binary exploits, these routers would be what I’d demonstrate on.”"

http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/366229-pre-hacked-electronics-come-straight-from-chinas-factories/

The Epoch Times is a major China and Chinese Communist party hater. They continually spread FUD regarding China and Chinese companies.

However I'm sure that Huawei isn't completely innocent. Fortunately there's probably enough eyes on this device that any kind of rootkit out spying will be outed pretty quickly.

While I can understand Marshmallow being new, calling it a "beta OS" isn't exactly true. But, is it true that the OS wasn't finished until a month from release?

It's almost a given that marshmallow wasn't completed until a month before release, hell probably days before release. Blackberry CEO is living in the olden days where software had to be completed months ahead of time because there was no opportunity for OTA or updates. Nowadays it's common that you have an OS update right when you take the new phone out of the box. So, "beta OS"? Yeah, whatever.

I've been looking at prices for a new screen and what Motorola would charge to fix it and I'm thinking it might just be better to use this as an excuse to upgrade to something newer.

Has anyone here ever replaced a screen on a Nexus 6? It looks like a pain in the rear end to do it myself, plus the screen alone looks like it might even cost more than I would have to pay Motorola to fix it.

Anyway, other than the pain in the rear end that would be replacing the screen, is there any other good reason to not just upgrade to a newer phone? I not keen on having to drop the money on it, but if that makes more sense in the long run then I could see myself going that route.

Consider that you can now buy a new Nexus 6 for about $300
