This is more Just Retail Things than Android Things but here goes:

I manage a package store. We upgraded to the chip reader at the beginning of this year having finally chucked the antiquated "dial a 1800 number to vertify swiped transactions" reader in the drat bin where it belonged. Note: That reader took about 30 seconds a swipe to process. The new reader runs via ethernet lines so swipes are near instant but the amount of bitching about the 30 seconds it takes to read a chip is absolutely mind boggling. Everybody should just slow the gently caress down and not whine bloody murder that their entire lives are inconvenienced because of slightly superior security options. The chip makes it more difficult to make fraudulent cards. The Pin makes it more secure for the bank. I've already busted two CC scammers (just earlier this month!) due to the chip trying to buy several hundred dollars worth of product with stolen credit card numbers. Knowing that those fuckers weren't able to get away with it is worth the extra wait for you the consumer.

Yes it's stupid that the manufacturer doesn't make sure every card has a pin enabled by default. You should be able to contact your bank and enable a pin of your own choosing, though when I was sent mine it had one hard coded already. According to a reuters report the pre-pinned cards are slightly more expensive to produce, however I cannot verify this independently. Please don't flip a lid at the register person for the teething issues of New Things. They've probably had to spend hours of their lives guiding Granny McMuffin through the process already.

So I got the MotoG5+ 64/4gb in last night. Initial thoughts are good! Surprisingly solid construction, I like the metal film on the back. I don't like the camera hump but it's going into a slim case anyway. The screen is nice and bright with good viewing angles and vibrant colors. I noticed that whomever had this before returning it to Amazon Warehouse had turned on Vibrant under color settings and I agree with that choice. The loaded backgrounds are all very nice selections compared to what Google ads by default to the Nexus line and the built in wallpaper switcher/search function is really cool.

The fingerprint scanner gesture commands are actually super useful and a very nice software touch from Lenovo. 5ghz wifi hookup and tons of storage are crazy nice to have. Not having to think about "how am I going to manage 14gb of available storage" is really nice and the extra ram helps stuff flow super smooth. Active-display that actually functions well is great! The version that the N5x had never really functioned properly when you picked up the phone.

A minor but very important thing: Bluetooth stack. In my entire time on Nexus devices the bluetooth stack has never functioned correctly. It'd always take multiple attempts to register a bluetooth connection to another device, and multiple more attempts to connect. This actually shows extraneous devices such as BT enabled speakers and hooks in without multiple tries and that's a very novel experience for me. That being said, I still appreciate the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack and sd card slot. I haven't installed one yet as I haven't felt the need, but the extra space potential is much appreciated and something that always bothered me about the Nexus phones.

I'll miss laser autofocus but I do like the ease of use of the default camera application. I haven't had much chance to test images in different lighting conditions, but what little opportunity I have had leads me to expect my experience will mirror that of most reviewers. Well lit images will be good, low light conditions it will struggle in.

A brief note to those of you buying this device: You may find SMS failing repeatedly when attempting to send. Go dig around under mobile data and turn off wifi-calling. I do not know if this is a default configuration for the device, or if whomever owned mine previously switched this on by accident but it'll kill outbound SMS.

In conclusion: $230 well spent, thanks for the recommendation goons.

Moto G5+ Battery Report:

Screen on time: 6h30m26s, 980mAh used, 32% of total power consumption. Brightness set to 60% with adaptive display on.
Cell Standby: 13% (no figure for mAH used)
Mixed LTE and Wifi connection, 3-4 bars at all times.
Plugged into charger @ 19% charge remaining.

Coming from devices that tap out at 3h screen on time, I am very impressed. Could have pushed it to 7h+ easily.

Edit:
Proof.

Sound quality for wireless headphones is still miles behind similarly-priced wired headphones and that's not likely to change any time soon. I listen to a lot of music to help me deal with migraines and the step down is very noticeable.

I agree with this assessment. Wireless is convenient but gently caress a bunch of having to buy extra dongles and charge your headphones and still accept inferior audio quality. It's really stupid even if that's the way the industry is trending.
