In a similar vein: Is there any meaning to the "try not opening weapon chests" loading screen tip? Is there some bonus if you skip them, or is it sarcastic?

Is there any tricks or commonly overlooked things? (Are some mutations just way better then they sound?) I like this game but I must suck hard because I have a hard enough time getting to scrapyard, and I've only past it once, and that was via skipping to 3-3 from the underwater level.

YV is pretty rad because his active + crossbow + homing bolts carried me through the Ice City on my first time getting to it.

I was just about to recommend robot before you edited your post. But like you I'm pretty terrible and never gotten past the throne, and only have gotten to the throne maybe once or twice. I found a bouncer shotgun once and really didn't like it. Flak Cannon is probably one of my favorite weapons.
