Casshern is probably the best non-Dandy thing Toonami has shown since its return and I wish they were airing it again instead of DW because it's a much better show in basically every respect. If your mark against it was "IT WAS BORING AS gently caress" then I'm inclined to think you're an ADD-riddled manchild. It's a slow show but it makes every second worthwhile in its ultimate payoffs. Also had really great fight choreography and baller aesthetics in its animation, and in general was a pretty honest show in its surprisingly positive themes despite the rather melancholic atmosphere. Compare to something like DW which is honestly just rather exploitative in its use of violence. 'course you could probably bring up Hellsing in that, but Hellsing also had a certain pervading charm about it and its characters and knew when to be serious and when to just goof the gently caress off. Casshern also featured an amazing piece of headgear at the end. Oh Snapple! fucked around with this message at 12:23 on Jan 2, 2015 |

GL was basically my gateway to super robot shows and with every year that passes by I think less of it. At this point I basically think of the last bits as hollow attempt to out-do the various forebearers that it cribs from throughout. Basically every time I think about it, I just think about how much Getter Robo loving owns.

Alternatively when your block is made up of mostly bad or mediocre shows already, with much of the actual quality being backloaded at the 4:30AM spot with stuff that's mostly been run a million times, maybe you're not really serving much of a purpose in having the block around if you're just picking more bad shows to throw in there when ratings are already kinda poo poo.

Dred Cosmonaut posted:toonami continues to pick up the safest, most boring flavor of the month poo poo, surprise surprise Look it's either do this and lose the block in a year or gamble on something good and potentially lose it in half a year instead. Though lol, SAO season 1 doesn't seem to have been any kind of ratings powerhouse for them anyway which makes this even worse really.

Dred Cosmonaut posted:This was during the space dandy time, the whole block was killing it for those few months Yup, meant to include a link so that could be seen but I didn't and then time passed so . Here it is just to document it: http://toonami.wikia.com/wiki/Toonami_Ratings But yeah, SAO's ratings came at a time where the block itself was killing it and it pulled in what it did as part and parcel of that. It still tended to lose viewers from its leadins. I feel it became a "breakout" for Toonami because that's what Toonami and such wanted it to be and because it has a vocal contingent of fans (like Inuyasha) who oversell the demand for it, when the truth is it just didn't do all that loving much and that's clearly present in the ratings.

Ultimately Toonami briefly existed to give us Space Dandy and in that context I am completely fine with its short, doomed existence through following it up with shows that are bad and not good like Dandy was.

Said it before but I honestly loved GL the first time I watched it. It was my gateway to the genre and for the most part I'm okay with it. It's just that as I watched and read a lot of the poo poo it cribbed from, a whole lot about it (namely toward the end) became worse and just felt hollow and weightless compared to its inspirations. Enjoy the show, by all means. It's pretty easy to do so, especially on first watch. Ending scenes still blow rear end, tho.
