Of course they can't be, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try to come as close as possible to it.

I don't feel that capital punishment accomplishes anything positive. I can imagine theoretical situations in which it might save the lives of innocent people by killing the guilty, but in the real world it's just killing people who are no longer a threat for essentially emotional reasons. Dalael's point about murder in prison is an interesting one, but such murders are actually surprisingly rare in practice.
