If it makes you feel any better, that guy tried to poison his daughter and successfully murdered his 8 year old son for insurance money. He also tried to poison three other kids at the same time to obscure that fact.

Not Texas, but it can't get much more depressing than Ricky Ray Rector saving the pecan pie from his last meal for later, though. I don't support the death penalty either but some nice words at the end of his life doesn't erase what the guy did. Hopefully he meant them but I doubt it.
