In fourth grade I had to write a persuasive essay for a standardized test. I hated the entire concept of it because i was a little poo poo and i ended up writing about how the pencil I was holding in my hand should be elected president. it was a garbage essay, but it was still a thousand times better than that

Just an observation. I have no idea if "traditional" methods are on their way out or not.

drawing a cintiq sitting on a table with a computer next to it is way more complicated than drawing a big square

Ultimately, it is about robbing these symbols of their power by showing exactly how absurd they are and turn them from common wisdom to an obviously ridiculous prejudice.

While I agree w/ everything you posted I think there's something to be said about who is creating the satire and what they're using as a means to that end. Going back to the Boko Haram one, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that a bunch of white people are lampooning another bunch of white people, and they're using a bunch of african rape victims as a prop to do so

So this mid-70's National Lampoon article by PJ O'Rourke entitled :nws: Foreigners around the World :nws: popped up on imgur. Kind of interesting to look at in light of Charlie Hebdo's content because it's more obvious (to me anyways) that the over-the-top racist jokes and cartoons are aimed at satirizing racist/xenophobic views in America. But I think that goes back to the idea of having to place satire in the context of the culture that's producing it, which is why Americans are struggling to interpret some of Charlie Hebdo's stuff.

considering o'rourke would go on to a lucrative career of being the al franken of reagan republicans I'm hesitant to agree

You take the "I spermjacked 20 dudes and collected their male tears for the femperial bath" and combine it with spaghetti and this and you end up with that stuff.

to stop hating so much, revitalization efforts like the ones he mentioned are effective, but they are supplementary, and might not even be possible anymore(how many of those buildings have asbestos in them?). As much as I love them, there's only so many hipster bars and restaurants built into hundred year old buildings that a city can support without an economic base to it, and dayton's seriously lacking one. There's no manufacturing to pay for all that stuff anymore, and abandoned buildings do rapidly become blight. The only way to "save" dayton would be to force everyone to move in to the same area, and then bulldoze everything else to make the city appropriately sized for it's population.

EDIT: for reals though, I've never lived in any state where non-governmental people used their state flag so much, and I've lived in about a dozen states. Washington DC takes a distant second, but that's partially because we have a badass flag and also a huge chunk of the city just moved here in the last few years and has a desperate need to show their DC-ness as quickly as possible.

I knew a dude growing up who flew all six flags of texas and the city seal on a flag. Dude loved flags.

It also helps that texas is tied for best flag of any state with new mexico, so that contributes to people liking flags here
