This year is going to own. I just paid off a bunch of credit card debt, and I got a huge raise at work towards the end of 2014. My house hasnt broken in any spectacularly expensive ways recently, my 2.5 year old boy is hilarious and awesome and an utter joy to watch grow up. I get actual vacation time this year, 3 weeks! My wife is low maintenence, beautiful, and extremely tolerant of all of my stupid hobbies.

Im not trying to brag. I am 35 and I was a listless and depressed single guy for a long time (most of my 20s), and I can totally empathize with a lot of the posters here and the poo poo you guys are going through. Just try to focus on your own value, and be the best you that you can be. If you need help, go get it. Cut negative influences out of your life and realize when you are using hobbies/the internet as an excuse to not work on yourselves. Have the best 2015 you can, bros.

Commited to helping a buddy with a few CEL codes his Mazda6 is throwing, a cylinder 3 misfire and a lean code on both banks. From googling, looks like we will check the MAF, vacuum leaks, swap the coil out of cylinder 3 and see what we get.

Bonus: I forgot it was a fwd v6 car, and of course cylinder 3 is on the back bank, requiring pulling the intake manifold and like 20 various connections to it. Also, its like 28 degrees out and I dont have a garage. I guess I am a good friend?

How many miles on it? Want to bet whether anyone has changed the plugs on the back, even if they've been changed on the front?

135k. Holy poo poo, what an ordeal. Took about 6 hours (in ~freezing temp) and 3 runs for parts/tools. So within the first 15 minutes, we pull the MAF and clean it, and that goes fine. Then I pull the crankcase vent hose from the intake, and it just snaps right off. Ok, that sucks. Also, its full of oil, and so is the intake. What the gently caress. Get the intake elbow (between airbox and throttle body) about half out, and realize there is a huge crack underneath it. Its literally about split in half. OK, well, that might have solved some of our vacuum leak issues...

So at this point I am a little on tilt, because I am super worried about everything I touch falling apart like brittle skeletons in an Indiana Jones movie. But gently caress it, lets plow through. After disconnecting a shitload of stuff, get the manifold off. Swap the front coils to the back while changing the plugs, so we can make sure whichever one that was throwing a code should theoretically throw a code on a new cylinder now, and that cylinder is one of the front 3 that are easy to get.

Clean his gross rear end throttle body (more oil and carbon build up), put in new intake manifold gaskets, replace the PCV valve (gummed up with oil),and get the manifold back on the car. Start buttoning everything back up so we can go to the parts store, and realize we snapped off the coolant line nipple on this weird plastic T-connector under the EGR. Fought the lovely hoses and got it out.

So casualties total was only 3 parts, but its frustrating that we had to spend so long on it, and we werent able to get the parts tonight. Hitting yards/dealer/etc tomorrow. Goal is to get this thing running again by Tomorrow afternoon, worse case scenario we can just replace the T-shaped piece (we managed to order that with delivery tomorrow at a shop) and then tape up the intake tubing and jbweld the stupid crankcase hose back together til we get the parts we need. It has to be running by Monday so my friend can get to work.

TLDR: A 12 year old Michigan car exploded to dust in my hands

side note: What the gently caress does oil in the crankcase vent hose/intake/etc mean? PCV valve jammed shut?

I have yet to have any luck with any of the aftermarket keyboard apps on iphone. They all seem to lock up or pause the messenger app, or load the stock keyboard or other weird poo poo. Its a bummer, because Swype worked pretty well otherwise. Its a nuance product though, so it has to be really nice and also an unreliable piece of poo poo.

For some reason my work decided long ago that 2nd level support analysts get 2 machines, a win7 laptop and a macbook. I just got my old macbook replaced by a new Macbook Pro 13, and holy poo poo its my favorite laptop I have ever used. Its just a work-funded 2000 dollar facebook machine, but hot drat if the screen isn't the best I have ever seen. The color depth and resolution are loving incredible.

I am not really a mac guy (although I certainly appreciate ios devices) but this is a nice piece of hardware.

I agree that old hondas are best hondas, as far as lego-esque ease of working on them. But I cant complain about my 08 civic (other than dbw ugh) and 2004 accord. K and R engines both, both are basically unbreakable tanks that cost pennies to maintain. The 08 civic is especially a fantastic handling little car for being a beigemobile/econobox.

I still wish I had just ponied up for a 4 door SI of the 08-11 variety, it would have been a little more money but I would enjoy the car a lot more.

I have no interest in seeing yet another war porn movie. The amount of "oh my gawd this makes me support are troops even more!" and war monger right wing circle jerks it has already inspired turns me off even more.

And I say all that as someone who is active duty military.

Edit: want a war movie? Watch Restrepo and its sequel. They're on Netflix.

Did you read and/or watch Jarhead?

What the gently caress there was a Jarhead 2?

Jarhead was a pretty good movie, and a loving incredible book. I went through a war-books phase for a while and read a shitload of stuff that I would probably never touch again, but I re-read Jarhead a handful of times over the past few years.

No arguments about the r series block flaws, although mine is stil under full replacement warranty for another year I think. At 130k I'm way past the typical window for the block issues thankfully. It's a shame people had to deal with that and it certainly ruins the rep of that gen of civic, which is understandable. If I was buying another 8th gen non-si if get a 2010/11, they have the cooler front bumper and don't randomly go boom.

Yeah, thats why I asked. The few marines I know were very unhappy with it based on how realistic it was. Apparently bad for recruiting :v:

Just realized I have been submitting my hours wrong at work for holidays, and now my company owes me like 6 days of holiday pay. Between that and my tax return, should just about fill the coffers of my e39 beater5 project fund.

The good people at pelican parts/fcp/bavauto/ebay will be eating well this week.

In Michigan, you get the option to claim 10% of your unemployment as federal taxes. Assuming you aren't so destitute that giving up that 10% it isnt an option, its the way to go. I had a 4 month stint on it a few years back and I didn't end up owing anything at the end of the year because I had them claim the 10%.

I delivered pizza in a college town and I got offered weed basically every night. Looking back, I think that was my favorite job. Not because of the weed, more the lack of stress and cool people I worked with.
