Yuri Kuma Arashi (Lilly Bear Storm) is the newest series written and directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara of Sailor Moon, Revoloutionary Girl Utena and Penguindrum fame, with character designs by Akiko Morishima who is mostly known for doing the fluffiest of yuri fluff.

It looks, well, completely loving insane.

Translated version.

Summary stolen from Zorak's Winter anime thread:

quote:

Some time ago, the asteroid Kumaria exploded in the depths of space.

The resulting fragments became a meteor shower that rained down on Earth, and for some reason, bears all over the world rose up and attacked humanity! In ""Man vs. Bear,"" the bears ate the humans and the humans shot the bears, resulting in a seemingly unending battle and a cycle of hatred. In the end, a giant ""Wall of Extinction"" was erected between the humans and bears and a state of mutual nonaggression came to pass...

The human world.

One morning, Arashigaoka Academy students Kureha Tsubaki and Sumika Izumino were by themselves and saw the ""Yuri Flower"" that bloomed in a flower bed. The two are friends as well as lovers. The flower bed is an important place to the two. At that moment, the Bear Alarms ring out! The bears are invading the human world, and humans are being attacked! Are they really those bears? One mystery invokes yet another mystery, one after another. The curtain rises magnificently on Yuri Kuma Arashi!

Alternatively:

quote:

The human world. One morning, Kureha Tsubasa and Sumika Izumino, students at Arashigaoka Academy, were alone watching “lily flowers” blooming in the flower bed. The two were ‘friends’ as well as [lovers]. The flower bed was a place very special for them. They stare at each other. Just then, a [Bear Warning] pierces loudly through the air! A Bear had encroached into the human world, and a human has been assaulted! What in the world is this bear..? Mystery brings on more mysteries, a series of one raging blow after another! “Yurikuma Arashi” elegantly begins its opening act now!

Characters so far and what little we know about them:

Ginko Yurishiro
VA:Miho Arakawa
Human/Bear

A girl who transferred into Arashigaoka Academy. However, her true nature is a “man-eating bear (kuma)”! She seems to show a special attachment to Kureha Tsubasa, but in the past, the two of them… Transforms into Winning Mode with the call, “Approve Yuri!” “Found my delicious smell! My 'love'…. growl growl.”

Lulu Yurigasaki
VA:Yoshiko Ikuta
Human / Bear

A girl who attaches herself to Ginko, and transferred to the academy together. As expected her true identity is also a “man-eating bear (kuma)”! She loves Ginko very much, and proceeds often to have “yuri (girls' love/lesbian) fantasies” that usually spiral out of control. She likes honey very much, and tries to add honey into everything she cooks. Just like Ginko, calling out “Approve Yuri!” transforms her into Winning Mode. “This girl, that girl, so much to choose from… Oh no, this place is filled with scents that smell so yummy, growl~.”

Kureha Tsubaki
VA:Nozomi Yamane

A 2nd-year female student at Arashigaoka Academy. She has a calm, collected personality and tends to shun other people away, but opens up her heart to Sumika Izumino who is her “friend” and “lover”. Her mother was killed by a bear when she was young, which caused her to hold a grudge against bears. Her special talent is shooting. To prepare for the battle to come against bears, she devotes herself to her training in the shooting range in the basement of her home. “I will never forgive bears. I will destroy bears!”

Life-Sexy
VA:Junichi Suwabe

The presiding judge of Judgments, who is in charge of the courts of Extinction. A sexy guy that manages everything about every Yuri trial! “That is sexy, shaba-da-doo!”

Life-Cool
VA:Mitsuki Saiga

The prosecutor of Judgments, who is in charge of the courts of Extinction. A cool guy with a sharp tongue that denounces all crime! “Clearly you ate too much. Guilty, I say guilty!!”

Life-Beauty
VA:Kazutomi Yamamoto

The counsel of Judgments, who is in charge of the courts of Extinction. A guy of beauty who glamorously evades all of the prosecutor's cross-examinations! “Love moment!! There is an excess of animosity against Yuri, twinkle twinkle~”

Sumika Izumino
VA:Yui Ogura

A girl wearing glasses that attends Arashigaoka Academy. A pretty yet frail girl, but has a strong will to protect her feelings of “love”. A classmate of Kureha, and the only person that Kureha opens up her heart to. Raises “lily flowers” together with Kureha in the academy's flower bed. “No matter what is done to me… My feelings for Kureha-chan… my ‘love’ will never be given up.”

Mitsuko Yurizono
VA:Aoi Yūki

Classmate of Kureha and Sumika, and the class representative. She amicably approaches the two that have distanced themselves from others in the class. But, what is her true motive behind that…? “And now this makes me a comrade, a friend. Right?”

Konomi Yurikawa
VA:Ami Koshimizu

Kureha's classmate who attends “Arashigaoka Academy”.

Yuri-Ka Hakonaka
VA:Kikuko Inoue

A teacher at “Arashigaoka Academy” that Kureha attends. She used to be a close friend of Kureha's mother (Reia Tsubaki). After Reia's death, she has taken care of Kureha, such as offering advice.

Reia Tsubaki
VA:Aya Endo

“Kureha Tsubaki”'s mother who was murdered by a bear. She used to be close friends with Yuri-Ka, a teacher at Arashigaoka Academy.

Kaoru Harishima
VA:Yōko Hikasa

Kureha's classmate that attends “Arashigaoka Academy”.

Could be amazing, could be a trainwreck, could be an amazing trainwreck, who can say.

Show starts on Jan 5th and Funimation has picked up the streaming rights for the US, CR are streaming it elsewhere, apart from the UK and Ireland.

Warning possible :nws:fan-service:nws: or possibly just a concept artist with a panty fetish, who can say!

Fan service update! OP is softcore porn, first episode is mostly fan-service free otherwise, relying mostly on visual metaphor. Really loving explicit visual metaphor. (see pic below)

Also Ikuhara! :stare:

I love Utena and wouldn't change anything about it (apart from that horrible late 90's CGI) but the amount of plot relevant episodes vs. weird poo poo just for the hell of it was relatively small.

Here's a link to the one chapter of the manga that was translated, if anyone is interested. Seems more likely to be closer to the TV series than the horrible Utena manga but how close is anyone's guess.

Considering that Penguindrum made the Tokyo subway sarin gas attack part of the plot, I wouldn't be surprised.

It's written into the Japanese constitution that they're not allowed to work together lest they accidentally rip open a hole in the fabric of the universe.

I started watching Penguindrum again and I've had 'Welcome to Rock and Roll fight' stuck in my head for about twelve hours now.

So it's as heavily edited as SM?

Nah, I think they just used some of the same voice actors or something? Sub is preferable because it's an early 2000 dub, so not great but you're not gonna really miss out on anything if you watch it that way. Though it's sometimes kind of hilarious hearing some of the ridiculous Ikuhara lines in English.

God, I'd forgotten all about Ursula's Kiss in all its terrible glory.

I would have liked to have seen them try to do a 'no-homo' version of the Utena movie, it would be about five minutes long.

What did Escaflowne do anyways? I've heard a lot about that, but never saw it myself (I saw a different language dub that I've read is pretty faithful to the original).

Aside from the usual violence censoring, they tried to re-cut it so the Van was that main character instead of Hitomi.

Ikuhara just loves motifs as well, Penguindrum has the same thing with all the subway imagery.

Edit: Oh and apples, apples in everything.
If anyone hasn't seen Night on the Galactic Railroad they really should, it's an amazing movie and Ikuhara references either it or the original book in pretty much everything he does.

So far there's been zero reason to think that any of that stuff will make it into the final production, character sheets often have a lot of unnecessary details.

Tuxedo Catfish posted:

You know, ignoring the obvious thing to argue about for a second, this was kind of a dull first episode. It feels like a parody of Ikuhara, with all the flashing lights and roses and lesbians but nothing to ground it. The characters have very little personality and motivations that are either simple or too abstract to make sense of / relate to yet, and the visuals border on self-plagiarism. It just doesn't feel like there's anything new here, and it doesn't even live up to the energy and charm of the things it's imitating.

Granted one episode isn't a lot to judge by, but I might just wait till the end of the season and wait to see what other people think.

I liked the episode on the whole but, yeah it kind of lacks the energy of the first episode of Utena or Penguindrum. Even the courtroom scene which is probably going to be the big repeated sequence seemed subdued.

Endorph posted:

i feel like utena was the one good thing ikuhara was ever going to do and now he's just a man with nothing but obvious symbolism and a weird view of lesbianism to his name

Penguindrum was good as well.

Thats why I said it was weird, because it would be lesbians bullying lesbians. You can assume that everyone in the town is gay, so unless japan has a strange gay on gay bullying problem it wouldn't make sense at least as presented right now. There's definitely more to it than just this and it probably involves what the two different species of lesbians represent.

Unless I missed it, there hasn't really been any indication that everyone in the school was gay and that Kureha and Sumika's relationship was considered normal by that societies standards.

I mean it's yuri, so they probably are and it it is, but still.
