Yuri Kuma Arashi (Lilly Bear Storm) is the newest series written and directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara of Sailor Moon, Revoloutionary Girl Utena and Penguindrum fame, with character designs by Akiko Morishima who is mostly known for doing the fluffiest of yuri fluff. I love Utena and wouldn't change anything about it (apart from that horrible late 90's CGI) but the amount of plot relevant episodes vs. weird poo poo just for the hell of it was relatively small.

Ikuhara just loves motifs as well, Penguindrum has the same thing with all the subway imagery. Edit: Oh and apples, apples in everything. If anyone hasn't seen Night on the Galactic Railroad they really should, it's an amazing movie and Ikuhara references either it or the original book in pretty much everything he does.
