Politics unusual going on in Washington state: http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-washington-state-can-teach-us-about-gridlock-in-the-other-washington/ quote:The November vote, featuring a turnout 43 percent larger than August’s primary, was a much different election. The district’s modest contingent of Democratic voters, revolted by Didier’s brash brand of politics and encouraged by their own party leaders, supported Newhouse. Meanwhile, moderate Republicans simultaneously promoted Newhouse as a “conservative farmer and businessman” and pummeled Didier as an extremist. Newhouse was sworn into Congress this month.

80 years ago today Ida May Fuller of Ludlow, Vermont received a check for $22.54 from the federal government, the first of its kind. "It wasn't that I expected anything, mind you, but I knew I'd been paying for something called Social Security and I wanted to ask the people in Rutland about it."

This is also the 180th anniversary of the first attempted assassination of a President, Andrew Jackson. Richard Lawrence fired a shot at him outside the Capitol, but the gun misfired. Jackson then started to beat Lawrence with his cane. Lawrence pulled a second pistol and fired it point blank, but it also misfired. The Smithsonian later test fired Lawrence's pistols and they both worked on the first attempt without issue.
