when they ported Chester Cheetah: Too Cool To Fool from genesis to SNES they changed the obligatory minecart sequence to use mode7 and holy poo poo is it amazingly terrible, complete with the normal hud going away and being replaced with another one that looks exactly the same.

Pixel indie games don't actually care about the hardware limits and implementations of whatever style they're aping. Indie games with "NES Graphics" usually have bright yellows and rotation with anti aliasing.

Indie games usually have lovely pixel artists.
