Imma see if I can get Mudcrab Merchant in here to discuss the issue. Perhaps merely typing her name summons her.

It's true, it does work!

GenCon is in fact my favorite show that I have ever attended, or exhibited at in my lifetime. I have been going to conventions since 1999 on a personal level, and since 2007 with Cosplay Deviants. I have traveled the world attending conventions both for fun and for a living, so I have quite literally seen it all, and even host panels on all of the horse poo poo I have seen in my 16 (!) years of being a lady in a primarily dude dominated sub culture (though not so much anymore). GenCon is an incredibly rare and amazing thing. I'm not 100% sure what contributes to the mythological creature I am convinced it is, but it is amazing. I have attended other gaming shows (both video and traditional) and no other show out there has ever come close to the community, comradery, or genuine kindness I have experienced at GenCon.

Specifically speak of exhibiting there with Cosplay Deviants :nws: it is incredible. GenCon is our most grueling show, physically and mentally, for both myself as an owner, and the girls as workers, and yet they all beg to be on that event team. It is early mornings, long days, and VERY late nights (we host adult games and a party after hours) and none of us would trade it for the world (well, except maybe a little more free time to actually PLAY something). The reason we all love it so much is the crowd is genuine. They are people, and they realize that my girls (and boys) are people too. They are able to separate the fact that just because someone might be naked on the internet for a living, doesn't mean they are disposable, or lesser than anyone else. At GenCon, I don't feel like I have to have someone escort my girls everywhere they go, even if it is within sight. At GenCon, they can wear that costume and not worry about being touched or harassed. At GenCon, you guys totally get that weird thing that they are dressed up as, and it makes their day. At GenCon, everyone is happy. People will look over their shoulder, and hold the door for you as they exit. People will actually move when you politely say "excuse me." People behave at GenCon like people should behave all of the time everywhere, and the fact that they have extended that to myself and my girls (and boys!) despite what we do, is something that I have NEVER experienced at any other show.

It's really polarizing to go from Anime Expo out in LA (80k+ anime kids) to GenCon (55k+ amazeballs of people) to the dreaded DragonCon (120k of nerd Mardi Gras) because any other show I am at.. all I can think of is "man, if this were GenCon..." and cry a little bit inside.

Actually, we make a LOT more at GenCon. DragonCon is a show that we will continue doing (though I would really love to go to PAX the same weekend) as long as all those people walk through it for the exposure.

DragonCon is the convention you go to if you think fun is a race to get shitfaced. The girl standing next to me on Friday night in the Marriott got thrown up on from a balcony.

GenCon is where you go to meet cool dudes and ladies and play rad games.

Just do it anyway. Doing events is lame and costs money, just play games with people after hours.

I.. my event's make me a lot of money, and they ARE the late night events. I don't normally set foot to freedom until about 3-4AM and then I just keep thinking how I have to be the next morning to open my booth in the exhibitor hall, and stay up AGAIN for my next event. Plus I'm a girl so add in make-up, hair, and all that stupid poo poo that makes people take me seriously in a professional setting. :byodame: My walks after my events are quiet ones, normally only one werewolf circle is left!

Whatever Double-M, you had that whole hour free last year where we hung out and did all those exciting things like ... oh god, we just went to your booth so you could check in. I am so sorry. You really do have no time for anything.
I got to buy two things in the auction! And I hung out a bit with.. uhh.. I can't remember his goon name, but his real one is Ricky, I think. Pretty sure my friend Lindsay and I scared him.

EDIT: Also, exhibitor room block goes live in about 30m at noon EST! It's my turn to fight in the arena!

You would think them getting almost all exhibitors a room would be easy since they know exactly how many vendors will be attending. There are only a limited number of booths, right, so why don't they just guarantee 1 room per floor space number you are buying (with the option to decline it) or something else like that?

This is the rule for Exhibitors this year for room count: Exhibitors can book up to 6 rooms in a single online reservations session, but the eligibility limit is based on your exhibit space. You can book up to 2 hotel rooms per 10’x10’ booth rented

I have a 20x10, so I am (was) able to book up to four rooms. They do an exhibitor 'block' of rooms, which is essentially that math, but it also includes the far away hotels, which no one actually wants to stay in. It also does not guarantee room type. So yes, I got all the rooms I 'need' in the hotel I wanted (the JW) but I don't have enough beds. Doubles were not even available to us. We're uhh.. still trying to sort that one out.

This year they put every exhibitor who wasn't a $70k con sponsor in a lottery for dealer hall space. I have a few friends who got screwed out of a booth because of it. I can't imagine Gen Con would move somewhere with less exhibition space.

I.. what? This is not something that happened for recurring exhibitors that I know of. We have been going for years now, and didn't have to enter a lottery for our renewal. No convention I've exhibited at does that. Many however do a lottery style registration for NEW exhibitors.. because everyone wants in, and there are only a few spaces to give them.

I really love what GenCon has done, standing up to this bill. My company does too, as we have several trans people in our ranks. It just gives me even more to say when people ask me why I think GenCon is so much better than any other convention!

I never get to eat any amazing food other than our staff dinner at the end of the weekend (at Harry & Izzy's). Most of my meal time is spent laughing at all the jackasses in line at Noodles and Company clutching tightly to my cell phone app that summons noodles into my face hole.

Sometimes I can even con someone ELSE into walking there to get it for me! So I.. never.. have.. to.. leave.. :stare:

Reminding people because this thread has a lot more traffic since last time I posted. If you come to the Japanime Games booth I will give you cool stuff as long as you identify as a goon. My name is Robert and I will be wearing an actual Japanime collared/bowling style shirt rather than a black Japanime T-Shirt. Just let me know you are a goon. These are the games we carry (https://www.japanimegames.com), if any of them are even passingly interesting to you come on by.

I will for sure be stopping by to take a long, hard :flaccid: look at your wares. Also, you don't have PMs which sucks, so would you be up for talking about a sponsorship for some events at GenCon? What's the best contact for that?

FFG line should go out the hall instead of wrapping around and blocking other vendors booths FFS. Miserably managed.

Chessex does not deserve like 5 different booths for the same poo poo when plenty of vendors don't even get a single one because of space.

Artist alley was meh and should definitely be moved to make space.

People with rolling luggage and beach carts in the exhibitors hall should be executed.

Cash is definitely king, you can get great deals if you pay cash (even more so when you have exact change).

The loving FFG line was INSANE. There was a lot of VERY LOUD bitching from vendors who got caught in the line. It was basically all that was being talked about by the little guys on that half of the hall.
Chessex should cut down on their 9billion booths, agreed.
I love the Artists, but am beginning ot think that they might be better in another space... or instead of moving them, move the kids activity area.
Rolling luggage should be burned if taken into the Exhibit Hall.

The exhibit hall is getting bananas, and I do not envy that staff. We tried to expands to get and additional 10x10 added to our 10x20 and expansion was locked, no matter how many "Priority Points" you have. Which are a crazy, arbitrary number to begin with. You earn them through consecutive years exhibiting, and was once told you could earn extra points through hosting events tied to your company that's exhibiting. I do not know how many PPs we have (:downswords:) and I don't know if there's way to know, actually.

I also did not hear about this:

quote:

For 2016, Gen Con took the controversial step of eliminating the on-site renewal option for companies with less than 30 “Priority Points,” the equivalent of three years of buying a 10’ x 10’ booth. Instead those companies will go into a different process in the fall, along with new companies that want to exhibit. This was causing considerable concern among newer companies who wanted to be sure they had a continuing presence at the show.

I would be seriously loving pissed if I FINALLY managed to get into the show and was not allowed to rebook after all of my efforts.

I also have opinions about the multi-boothers and things like that in the hall.. but I don't wanna make any fellow exhibitors angry. They might be a goon reading this right now! :ohdear:
