The ESL is only shown on Foxtel's Eurosport channel in Oz. Also for those used to the NRL orgy, the ESL only broadcasts a couple of games every week so watching your team week in, week out from afar is not possible.

That said, the best way is to bail a mate/parent/relative/stranger up for his/her Foxtel Go login (they probably not using it or all of them) and install on a device (tab/phone/pc) and watch for free in glorious SD. Quota free on Telstra, but not too savage for those who are not with the evil empire.

Seconded - Foxtel Go is a great thing for watching league. If I've got nothing better to do than be a massive nerd I'll frequently spend Saturday with it on my Surface whilst playing PC games and maybe having a TV show on another screen. Glorious technology!

Did this on Saturday night with a good mate, BBL on one tab and soccer on the other tab. Bottle of scotch in between.

Former NRL star Matt Seers charged with supplying cocaine on Gold Coast

EX-NRL player Matt Seers has been arrested and charged with supplying cocaine on the Gold Coast.

Seers, who played fullback for the North Sydney Bears and Wests Tigers during the 1990s and early 2000s, has been granted bail and will appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on February 10.

Queensland police said a 40-year-old male from Chinderah had been arrested and charged with “15 counts of supplying a dangerous drug and one count of trafficking a dangerous drug”.

The Seers arrest is part of a joint investigation between Queensland police, the Crime and Corruption Commission and NSW police.

The development comes one week after retired Queensland and Australian legend Jason Smith was arrested and charged with allegedly trafficking 280 grams of cocaine between June and December last year.

Seers was selected on the NSW State of Origin reserves bench during Super League war on four occasions.

Seers is the cousin of ex-NRL player Craig Field, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of the manslaughter of NSW north-coast farmer Kelvin Kane last December.

I was hoping the answer was "in the 90s they started hiring nutritionists and discovered that players could vastly improve their performance if they expanded their diets beyond pies and XXXX and now they're all hulking Greek gods of footy who have no need for puny shoulder padding" but your answer works too.

Some players still wear them, mainly old or coming back from injury, and they tend to be the more hugging suit like type of pads (Jonathon Thurston does) rather than the old monsters of old.

But yeah players are hulking Greek gods compared to yesteryear and pads seem to make life more difficult.

TIGERS prop Matt Lodge has been stood down from training after being arrested earlier this month, with the NRL’s Integrity Unit launching an investigation into the incident.

Reports emerged on Wednesday that Lodge, who was sanctioned by the NRL last year for writing “c***” on his wrist strapping while playing for NSW in their Under-20s State of Origin fixture, was arrested earlier this month in notorious Sydney nightspot Kings Cross.

“Wests Tigers can confirm that Matthew Lodge has been charged by the NSW Police following an altercation in the early hours of Sunday 11 January 2015,” the Tigers said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The club finds Lodge’s actions unacceptable and is cooperating fully with the NRL Integrity Unit.

“Lodge was stood down from training for one week due to a breach of club protocol and further punishment will be considered once the NRL Integrity Unit has concluded investigating the matter.

“Wests Tigers will make no further comment at this time.”

According to reports, Lodge, who has played four NRL games for the Tigers, after joining them from Melbourne last season, was arrested after refusing to leave a Kings Cross nightclub.

Julian O'Neill posted:

As his fame and confidence grew at the Broncos, O'Neill found himself at the centre of a number of alcohol-fuelled incidents. At Southport Magistrates Court in 1995 he faced five charges, following an incident at Conrad Jupiters Casino where he was reported to have urinated under a blackjack table, including indecent exposure and offensive behavior. He was found not guilty, three fraud charges were dropped and he was awarded costs.[1]

After being released by the Brisbane Broncos, O'Neill played a season with the London Broncos but was released by them as well after a drink-driving offence. For a time he was engaged to Australian swimming star Samantha Riley, but the engagement ended after Riley, who (despite being embroiled in a drugs controversy herself in the lead-up to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics) was renowned for having a clean-living reputation, reportedly grew tired of O'Neill's alcohol consumption and subsequent reckless behaviour.[1]

He made a fresh start at the Western Reds in 1996 but was released in 1997 after being fined and disqualified from driving in 1997 in Perth's Magistrates Court.[1]

He made another clean start at the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 1998 but suffered immense publicity and a $10,000 fine from the club over a 1999 pre-season tour incident where a drunken O'Neill defecated in the footwear of teammate Jeremy Schloss. This incident became known as "the poo in the shoe" affair, and gained much media attention and public ridicule after O'Neill reportedly uttered the alliterative line, "I just shat it Schlossy's shoe," to his teammates.[1]

In 2001, O'Neill's 13-month-old daughter, Piper, was killed when a television set fell onto her in his family's home [1]

In 2004, while on a pre-season trip to Australia with the Widnes Vikings, he was accused of drunkenly attempting to set fire to a 13-year-old boy who was wearing a foam-rubber dolphin mascot suit whilst on a river cruise in Port Macquarie. To avoid apprehension, O'Neill stripped to his underwear following the incident, dived into the Hastings River and swam to shore, before hitchhiking and being picked up by a passing car. [4]

Craig Gower posted:

Gower has been involved in a number of alcohol-related off-field incidents. In 1999, Gower exposed himself to a female Irish tourist in a Coogee bar, blaming his behaviour on alcohol intoxication. He was dumped from the Kangaroos squad and fined A$2,500 by the NRL and a further A$500 in court after pleading guilty to indecent exposure.[16]

In December 2005, Gower was fired as Panthers captain[17] after incidents at a charity golf event where he argued with several guests, groped the teenage daughter of former league player Wayne Pearce, chased Mitchell Pearce with a bottle before vomiting on him, streaked nude around the resort, stole and crashed a golf cart, held a butter knife[18] to the throat of a Sydney radio personality before throwing it at resort guests, and engaged in a brawl with resort security before being ejected from the official function and detained by police.[19] Gower was handed a "final warning" by the National Rugby League and fined A$100,000, with A$90,000 to be paid to an NRL programme encouraging the responsible use of alcohol by league players and $10,000 to replace the destroyed golf cart.[20] Gower was "deeply unhappy" that the Penrith Panthers club did not defend his reputation, and at one stage threatened to "walk" from the club.[21]

Allegedly inebriated with alcohol in a bar at Kings Cross on 11 February 2007, Gower allegedly tried to kiss one man before biting him on the neck and sparking a brawl, and is accused of assaulting another man.[22][23] The Panthers club controversially reappointed Gower as captain in 2007, claiming the Peppermint Lounge incident was just a media "beat-up".[24] Australian swimmer Dawn Fraser said Gower was unfit to be captain, due to his alleged lewd behaviour at the charity golf event which she attended,[25] and Sarah Maddison, spokesperson for the Women's Electoral Lobby, said "reappointing Craig Gower would send all the wrong messages."[26]

A tough decision, and an education for any posters not aware of these two legends of the game.

Changes to the 40-20 rule and scrums will be trialled in Friday night's Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars match at Cbus Super Stadium.

NRL Referees Elite Performance Manager Tony Archer said all scrums would be moved to the centre of the field in the match.

Mr Archer also said any kick of 40 metres or more which finds touch will give possession to the kicking team.

He said both changes were designed to allow more attacking opportunities for both sides and would potentially ensure a more exciting contest.

The attacking team will have the choice of which side the ball is fed into scrums. Meanwhile, the lock from the attacking team will not have to bind in scrums.

"With significant space and attacking opportunities on both sides of the scrum, we hope that there will be ample opportunities for the team in possession to attack immediately from the scrum win," Mr Archer said.

"While this remains a trial of the change, we wanted to test this in a high-quality pre-season match and the All Stars presents us with that opportunity."

Any general play kick which finds touch 40 metres further down field from where the ball is kicked will result in a tap to the kicking team.

"This is designed to open up the attacking opportunities - both sides will now have a greater opportunity to regain possession after a set," Mr Archer said.

"The video referee will help ensure that the rule is monitored appropriately."

The changes have been discussed by the NRL Competition Committee over the past 12 months. The scrum rules were trialled in a Holden Cup pre-season match in 2014, but Mr Archer said it was important to also test it in a top-level match.

The Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars will see the pre-season trial of four touch judges continue. Two of the touch judges can also move to in-goal areas when play reaches the try-scoring zones, enabling a greater presence of officials during critical plays.
