The Lair branches (Swamp/Shoals, Spider Nest/Snake Pit and Slime) are all much harder than the lair itself and better left until after you've completed the Lair, the Orcish Mines and the Dungeon itself. Slime in particular is much harder, and the 6th/bottom level is home to an extremely dangerous unique called the Royal Jelly who you probably don't want to take on until you know exactly what you're doing.

e: also go axes because they are very cool and the best, although you need a backup plan for hydras
