I did a contracting stint at a fortune 50 with a strong safety team. Normally it was great because they took no poo poo and gave no fucks, their word was law. Sometimes it was absurd like getting pissed that a subcontracted fencing company wasn't using fall protection while loading a flatbed pickup with fence sections.

One thing that I remember was a thermostat broke and released Mercury in behind drywall. They called in a remediation company and spent thousands on making sure all the Mercury was remediated.

My favorite moment was this:

An employee called in to the emergency line stating that there was a box truck parked in a loading zone with the rear door open. Inside of the cargo area was an lpg cylinder that was venting, and the driver was nowhere to be found. The fire emergency team was called in, safety and facilities both respond and isolate the area. Then the idiot driver just bebops back in wondering what the commotion was for. Turns out the valve was bad on the cylinder and he figured he would just open it to vent off the contents while he was making a delivery in the building. The facilities manager, a little fiery Italian dude, cursed that guy out so hard he woulda made a drill instructor blush.

I would put zero faith in that section actually being detachable. The seems are just simply because bending small sections was a lot easier than bending the whole rail.

Oh and B, it's loving China, lol if you think anything is done properly there

The full ~10 minute video was better, i liked the build up to the explosion. It seems to have gone completely missing off the internet though :(

Train people are really loving weird. They know the schedules of trains and just randomly show up to watch it go by, or take video that only other train weirdos would ever find interesting.

A Venn diagram between train weirdos, transition lens wearers, and dangerous perverts would just simply be a circle.

My parents were born in the 50's and they talked about handling mercury with their bare hands in school and buying kits that came with vegetable seeds and radioactive pellets to plant with them.

Shoe stores still had these things in them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoe-fitting_fluoroscope when they were young kids.

My mom broke a thermometer intentionally so I could see and play with the mercury. I spilled it into the carpet later and didn't think of it again until many years later when I actually learned about mercury.

Mercury is bad, but it isn't that bad. People used to drink the stuff as a remedy for constipation. Kids used to play with it in chemistry class, and the chemistry teachers used to have several classes playing with it every year.

A single touch of the silver liquid isn't guaranteed death. A broken fluorescent bulb doesn't need a hazmat team to clean up.

I agree with you, it wasn't a big deal. But that also didn't stop the EHS team at a prior employer from calling in a remediation team to do a full on hazmat cleanup because a mercury wall thermostat broke and spilled mercury behind the drywall. They had to have spent 30k on remediation services for something that wasn't given second thought by me or my parents when I was a kid.

This was full on hazmat suits, isolation systems, and 3-4 days of work for a little spilled mercury.

I believe they can do a controlled shutdown without needing to quench the magnet. It's still an expensive fuckup since it'll have to be thoroughly inspected and damaged pieces replaced, but it should be running again in a few days.
