Was at the range today and I look to my right and Scottie Pippen was hitting balls. Apparently he is part owner of the golf course I practice at. Anyway, I haven't hit balls in two weeks, but I've been working on some stuff in my house. Mainly, the fundamentals which I almost obsess over. Signed up for small package of lessons from the best instructor I've encountered so far. $180 for 3 half hour lessons and a playing lesson. First one is on Sunday, so I'll make sure I get a few videos that I'll post here to see what you all think. I know there are some really good golfers here and I'm always interested in a second opinion.

Tiger looks like he may still have some back issues. Very ginger marking his ball and pulling it out of the hole.

I'm hoping that he starts to understand that and changes his swing to not cripple him any more. I just miss having Tiger on the weekends, even if hes not in contention.

I decided to get fitted this year, is the fittings at Golf Smith/Golf Galaxy workable or do I need to seek out someone that communes with the golf gods?

Unless you have an unusually talented fitter at your GS/GG, which is almost assuredly not the case, then you should absolutely find someone who actually knows what they're doing when it comes to fitting you for clubs. Find some online reviews for fitters in your area, ask around on golfwrx, etc.

A proper fitting for your entire bag will take multiple hours and usually more than one visit to get all of the lie angles set correctly.

Good luck!

Yeah I dunno what the deal is. Back stiffness shouldn't cause a professional golfer to suddenly have the short game of a 20-handicapper. I also completely disagree with the pundits who are trying to link the changes he made to his full swing to his suddenly awful short game. Nobody's chipping stroke is anything like their full swing, nor does one affect the other (physically).

When I first started playing golf again as an adult, I found that practicing putting would tire out my back muscles. Of course this was while having a huge gut and a desk job with bad posture. In a full swing I think you can compensate for back weakness with feet and knees and hand-eye coordination, and maybe the muscles are just used differently.

It's mental. He was on top of the world before he got caught doing the :gooncamp: with all those pornstars. When you think you are invincible you play with amazing confidence. When it all fell apart it broke the man. Not to mention getting old sucks.

I do agree that it must be something mental, but I doubt it's related to :gooncamp:. He played very well in 2012 and fantastically in 2013 - he was the best golfer by a wide margin that season even though he didn't win a major. Maybe his injuries are starting to be accompanied by chronic pain that affects him between swings and that he can't ignore.

He out-drove Bubba by an average of 10 yards last week (while missing a ton of fairways). It really does seem like if he didn't try to swing at 110% every time he'd perform better and not rip apart his back.

All good points. Also helps to have narrowed down the brand of clubs you want to get somewhat. You will get tired if you spend an hour trying multiple drivers/irons before you actually start the fitting process.

Guys kept coming up and being like, "Hey can I hit the one Bubba uses?" and he would be like, "uh yeah here. So anyway let's try some different shafts to see which one works best for you."

Went to deweys again sat night with some friends to mess around. Good times were had then we had an impromptu long drive contest. Here's my winning drive :smuggo:

Just a slight fade but more or less straight shot. I need to learn to hit a drat draw though. I can do it most of the time with my 3 wood when I try, but my driver is another store.

Here's the weird thing, when I was in maui last year and was using the rental Titleist clubs at kapalua, I was hitting a draw every time with the driver in the bag. It was a stiff flex or maybe even regular flex shaft vrs the X flex I use on my covert. I'm guessing I was getting more flex causing the head to come around more resulting in the draw? Should I consider dropping down to a less stiff shaft? Help me here a draw here guys!

This is the path to madness. How about just hitting your driver straight and use your 3 wood when you need to work it off the tee. The game of golf is littered with good players who destroyed their games by trying better control their draw shape when their natural flight was a fade.

Once you get to 115+, it's just hard to hit a draw shape without having the big hook pop up. My swing speed is about the same as you (116-119, a few over 120), and I find it's much safer to play it straight or with a slight fade off the tee. The difference in distance is negligible, and I think people get way too focused on shaping the ball rather than hitting it straight.

Idk maybe that's a possible concern when you're a +1 or better, but I wouldn't care about that until you're hitting 12 or 13 GIRs every round. Til then, I wouldn't worry so much about shape and just focus on getting firs and GIRs.

Somewhat related, I find that I score a lot better when I just aim for the middle of the green. I'm a sucker for sucker pin placements, and my tracking has certainly born out that the birdies I make by sticking it close don't outweigh the bogeys or worse I make when it goes bad. Obviously, I'll play to get on the right side of a hill or whatever, but I'm really going to focus on just hitting the green rather than trying to hit it close.

Thanks for this. I think I just needed someone to tell me I'm probably way over thinking my play and to just play what I do naturally and not worry about it. And you're right about the big hook, the one time I tried on the range to play the draw all I got was a big fat 200 yard hook.

This is one of those things that pro caddies say for amateur golfers. "Stop trying to be fancy and aim at the middle of the green." If you miss, you'll probably still be on the green and putting, instead of trying to get that back right pin location and sailing it. I've been making an effort to do this lately, and it's been paying off.

Combine it with Mickelson's principle of "on long puts, aim for a three foot circle around the cup, then drain your 2nd putt" and it's par central up in this bitch.

Went into the attic last night to enjoy western New York State's 40 degree heat wave. Learned that my major malfunction for my attempted winter-swing-retool was my arms. As soon as I focused on keeping my arms loose and not tense, I went from 10-13 degree closed face angles, to 2 degrees or less for the majority of my swings. Exciting.

Fade bro checking in. I won't say I can't hit a draw with my driver, but I will admit I "currently struggle with" hitting a draw with my driver. I can hit a baby fade all day long, though.

Second stroke play round since Thanksgiving (snuck in a scramble with 3 other guys the Sunday of Christmas week).

Talk about needing to knock off rust! I had a short game Tiger Woods wouldn't even borrow. I also chunked my first four approach shots, including two on the first hole. Didn't really make any putts (except for a 15 footer straight up the hill for par on 18...after a long bunker shot...after I chunked my wedge from 102...). I was smoking my driver, though. Haven't really worked on anything in the off season. Not making a birdie was pretty disappointing, especially since I had <30 yard pitches for my 3rd shot into 3 of the 4 par 5s. I called a long birdie (because maybe BSing to my playing partners would work!) on hole 12, and it banged off the back of the hole with too much speed and stayed out.

I was paired up with an older lady who had a 915D2. She hit it well. I have no reason to switch drivers, (I hit 12 of 14 fairways, averaged 279 yards, and still had good looks at the greens the 2 times I missed), but I'm dreaming of a 915D3 with an Oban Kiyoshi purple shaft...

Fade is easier to control and you have plenty of distance. If these numbers are accurate you would be better served with a higher launch combined with a lower spinning golf shaft. I would recommend keeping the x-flex shaft. Maybe something with a higher kick point and heavier weight.

What shaft do you use now?

Deadspin's sub-site has a fantastic article about golfing with your father-in-law or boss

quote:

By the time you hit the back nine, it's likely that you'll be too fed up to put any real thought into your stupid tee shot, because golf is stupid and the sun is stupid and old people are stupid. This is a good headspace to be in! You'll be playing with an unencumbered mind, as a man who has already been through the wringer and is now just hacking at the ball because, well, gently caress it. This is when good things will start to happen for you, when your heightened DGAF levels start leading to surprisingly brilliant golf shots. Tell me I'm wrong after you eagle the 18th hole while in a heat-stroke-induced fugue state.

I've started to not carry a scorecard when I play alone. I'm sure this is a bad thing to do if you care about your handicap, or like to play in tournaments and need to simulate playing under pressure. But if you just want a confidence boost or motivation to practice more it's pretty great. At the end of the round you remember all the good shots you made, instead of the bad ones that gave you a Bad Number, since there are no Numbers. It's almost therapeutic.
