Yeah I dunno what the deal is. Back stiffness shouldn't cause a professional golfer to suddenly have the short game of a 20-handicapper. I also completely disagree with the pundits who are trying to link the changes he made to his full swing to his suddenly awful short game. Nobody's chipping stroke is anything like their full swing, nor does one affect the other (physically).

It's mental. He was on top of the world before he got caught doing the :gooncamp: with all those pornstars. When you think you are invincible you play with amazing confidence. When it all fell apart it broke the man. Not to mention getting old sucks.

I do agree that it must be something mental, but I doubt it's related to :gooncamp:. He played very well in 2012 and fantastically in 2013 - he was the best golfer by a wide margin that season even though he didn't win a major. Maybe his injuries are starting to be accompanied by chronic pain that affects him between swings and that he can't ignore.

I was watching a replay on the Golf Channel last night. He was out there swinging like an old man trying to reclaim his youth.

So I signed up for a golf league and I'm mystified by how the scoring works. We play on Mondays, and points are awarded as follows. 1 point for a bogey, 2 for a par, 3 for a birdie, 4 for an eagle. Players are also allocated a point total based on Handicap. I'm a bad golfer, so I get 3.5 points, while my partner gets 10.5. Then we play against another twosome and some Maths happen and we either win or lose. The Maths part is a total mystery though.

Follow up #2. Golf pro told me I'm a head case (he's right) and that I'm topping the ball because I'm picking up and then I'm hitting fat shots because I'm slowing my swing down trying to correct.

Shot a 45 at leagues tonight. That ties my best 9 holes ever.

In light of the above remark, is this a dreadful score? I've been taking lessons for about a month, and did get that hole-in-one, but I'm wondering if I should keep playing par 3/executive courses until I get better or the real thing?

Lately I've been having some problems with my 4 Hybrid, normally one of my favorite clubs. I marked a few balls with a Dry Erase marker (this leaves a nice mark on the club) and I've hitting it off the toe. I tried moving the ball closer to my body, and it didn't help.

So this year is the second year that I've played in a golf league, and I've been playing for 2.5 years now, after a 20 year break. At 46 years old, I'm not exactly going to set the world on fire with amazing distance. I did have 3 birdie putts last week though. Unfortunately the greens were punched so I only sank one of them.

After a long winter and knee surgery, I came back slowly. I had to work out some bad habits and made some adjustments to my swing. I'm holding my hands a lot closer, getting power from twisting my torso. This had been causing me to hook/draw everything. Then I remembered that I have to add some lag into my swing like I'm trying to stab the ball and now my shots are more consistent and traveling much farther.

Things I have to work on now to break 90:

Stop hitting behind the ball. Sometimes I get lazy and don't transfer enough weight to my front foot and the club hits the ground behind the ball. It's a bad habit from having a bad knee.
Pitching: I have the Ping W,U, and S wedges. (Ping has to be special with their labels) I could use a 60 degree wedge.
3 wood and 5 wood. I never hit the 3 wood on the course, and the 5 wood I only use off the tee when I need to hit a short drive. I'm way to inconsistent with them. I can hit them on the range when I'm on a good streak, but it's a different story on the course.
Distance: I don't hit very far. Sand Wedge is 70, Gap (U) wedge is about 90-100, Pitching wedge is 105-115, etc. Long par 3s are hard for me because I have to hit a hyrid 180 yards.

My putting is decent.
I go to the range about 4 days a week.

Having watched my handicap creep up from 20 to 21.5, I decided that I needed a new approach to practicing. I went to the range and rather than hit the same club 5 times in a row I did a simulated game from the driving range. For example, I'd hit driver, and select a 4 hybrid, 6 iron, or PW depending on how good the drive was. I also simulated 20 yard pitch shots.

My 4 and 5 hybrids are very inconsistent. I don't take a divot with these and end up with a lot of low shots that go about 150 yards. I hit the 7,8,9 and wedges pretty good, and I did surprisingly well with the 5 wood. 6 Iron was meh.

Any ideas?

Don't hit balls every swing. Instead, take 5-20 practice swings and really focus on trying to implement what you're working on, then hit 1 ball. Repeat as many times as it takes.

It's boring but very effective.

Practice hitting partial shots, like hitting a 9 iron 100 yards. And always use an alignment rod.

So here is an interesting follow up. I went to the range and the pro was giving free 10 minute lessons to everyone.

I bend my knees too much (not surprising after having new surgery last year) and I don't bend over enough and I need to stick my rear end out.

This worked wonderfully for a while, then I started to lose it and find it and lose it during the rest of my range session. :downs:
