He managed a T5 at St. Andrews in 2005, but a T14 in 2010 and a T36 in 2000 leave room for improvement. I know he loves links golf, but Whistling Straits is a parkland course masquerading as a links course. It's got the rolling fairways and the gorse rough, but it has forced carries into a lot of greens. He's got the length to be competitive, but he missed the cut both years the PGA was held at Whistling Straits (2004, 2010). I don't know much about the US Open course this year.

God that's a pretty blade. I've read good things about the 915 series, but not enough to get me to switch. I've never been a fan of heel-shafted putters, but I appreciate the milled face. Inserts are for weirdos. Now I'm gonna have to go home and post my bag.

They explained his chunked chips the last time he played in a tournament (Hero World Challenge?). In trying to ingrain his swing changes, it's trickled down to his chipping motion, and it's very easy to chunk the ball at this stage. He'll work through it, but it is definitely disturbing to see.

Fade bro checking in. I won't say I can't hit a draw with my driver, but I will admit I "currently struggle with" hitting a draw with my driver. I can hit a baby fade all day long, though. Second stroke play round since Thanksgiving (snuck in a scramble with 3 other guys the Sunday of Christmas week). Talk about needing to knock off rust! I had a short game Tiger Woods wouldn't even borrow. I also chunked my first four approach shots, including two on the first hole. Didn't really make any putts (except for a 15 footer straight up the hill for par on 18...after a long bunker shot...after I chunked my wedge from 102...). I was smoking my driver, though. Haven't really worked on anything in the off season. Not making a birdie was pretty disappointing, especially since I had <30 yard pitches for my 3rd shot into 3 of the 4 par 5s. I called a long birdie (because maybe BSing to my playing partners would work!) on hole 12, and it banged off the back of the hole with too much speed and stayed out. I was paired up with an older lady who had a 915D2. She hit it well. I have no reason to switch drivers, (I hit 12 of 14 fairways, averaged 279 yards, and still had good looks at the greens the 2 times I missed), but I'm dreaming of a 915D3 with an Oban Kiyoshi purple shaft...

Yeah, 1,000+ yards shorter, wider (and slower) fairways, less penal rough, and slower greens. But yeah, I know what you mean about feeling temporarily superior to Tiger. I'm gonna (hopefully) play the Shell Houston Open Tournament course the Saturday before they shut it down for the tournament. If I'm hitting it okay, I'll scoot back to the tips for ultimate torture. Breaking 80 would be INSANE.

If all goes according to plan, I'll have all spring break to play some warmup rounds. I walked a 9 hole course for 18 holes today, shot a couple over. Was 6 inches away from holing out for eagle on 1, then left an eagle putt 6 inches short on hole 8. Easily could have shot under par, as it was a short course with tiny greens and very little trouble, but it felt good after being off for a few weeks.

Last week was Spring Break for me. Pros:
- Birdied last two holes to shoot even on Tuesday. - Shot +4 or better all 5 days. Cons:
- Had a <5 footer for birdie on both my 27th hole Monday and my 18th hole Friday to shoot even for the round. Missed them both. - The rain that was scheduled during the week but before my round at the Golf Club of Houston (where the Shell Houston Open is played) shifted to later in the week, destroying my chances of playing. I'll have to try to play in a couple of weeks, like after the Masters. Bummer.

Friend takes an 8 on the hole after finding the water twice. Dad takes double, BIL stays dry but three putts for an 8. I need par or better to win. After messing up so many chances on the back nine, I put it all together when it mattered. Drive right down the middle, PW to ten feet below the hole, straight up the hill, and I knew the putt was in as soon as I hit it. Man, that felt awesome. Then I turned around and threw my ball into the lake because eff that hole.

Played Sunday with a guy who's a semi-touring professional, I guess. He attempts maybe 10 events per year via monday qualifying. He said that, in order to qualify for the Shell Houston Open, you have to play a certain course (which I've played before, pretty tough) and place in the top 10 to advance. This usually requires a -7 or -8. Then, those 10 players play a second round against the Web.com and PGA Tour players who didn't get sponsor invites or exemptions into the event. They only take the top 2 from there or something like that. He was pretty good, too. He attempted the Shell Houston Open qualifying, but his -3 wasn't even in the top 30. He did qualify for the Valero Texas Open a few years back. I could keep up with him off the tee, but he was just crazy consistent. I shot +4 and made zero birdies, and he shot even with an eagle, birdie, and 3 bogeys. He probably hit 12-13 greens, and except for the two bunkers he found (didn't get up and down from either of them, surprisingly), he missed all of his greens short on the apron, and he putted up. I saw him pull out a putter from 10 yards off the green on the first hole (550 yard par 5), and I pegged him as one of those guys who just can't chip or pitch. He holed it for eagle. Whatever works! He got my information and wanted to play with me again, which is cool. He asked about some of the local courses near me (I was playing at a more upscale public course in North Houston), and he started giving me grief because they were "too easy" for me or "not long enough from the tips." Man, I like playing short courses every now and then! Birdies are fun.  Edit: Also I wanted to kill him and wear his skin because he got two dozen balls from Sergio from the SHO this year. Build a house on the dogleg of an attackable hole (par 5 or drivable par 4), get pissed when people fire golf balls at your house. One owner of such a house on a local course actually started a fight with somebody when the golfer punched a hole (just one of MANY) in his vinyl-sided chimney trying to cut the corner. The owner of the house was knocked out cold.

It could be a weird quirk in my phone, but I've reinstalled the app three or four times, and it's always done this. Is my phone trying to make me feel better? I'm happy to average 269 yards. 294 would be laughable. Test it out to see if you're getting inflated yardages. Edit - 294 would be laughable for me. Putter fittings are a thing. The short of it - http://www.better-golf-by-putting-better.com/putter-fitting.html Off the top of my head, some people use hand-me-down putters that aren't cut to the right height. Others use putters that have a different weight or offset than what their natural putting stroke would need. Visual preference is also a thing. A fitting might expose you to a putter or putting style that suits your eye better. Confidence is invaluable when standing over a putt. That being said, any putter fitting worth the money will test your ability to line the ball up properly with cameras or a laser system. If you're not lined up, you're only going to make putts by accident.

Jealous. There aren't any courses close enough to me to warrant a membership. It would be an hour one way to the nearest course for which I'd consider a membership. Got my first official summer round in.  I'm pretty terrible at preparation. I don't hit range balls before warming up, nor do I actually hit range balls between rounds. The former is because I usually get to the course too late to do more than chip and putt, and the latter is because if it's not raining, I'd rather go play golf. I found a stretching routine for golf on Men's Health last night, and it's the warmup to a 4 week golf workout program. I'll do the workout tonight, but I just did the stretching a few hours before my round this morning. I felt pretty good on the first tee. I drove the ball pretty well. Only missed two fairways, and one of the two misses was still playable (the other being a fairway bunker on a par 5). 10 greens, 26 putts. Hole 2 - 3 putt for bogey (hit a 6i when I needed a 7i) Hole 3 - Driver - 3i hybrid to back of green, chip to a few feet for birdie Hole 5 - 20 footer for birdie from the front fringe. Hole 6 - Decent drive, fatted a 6i enough to leave a gap wedge instead of a sand wedge for my 3rd. I think I fatted my third as well, but I got away with it. Made a 15 footer. Hole 8 - Mashed a drive over some bunkers, had a 40 yard pitch, hit it to 3 feet for birdie. Hole 9 - Decent enough drive, pushed a 5i nearly into a water hazard near the green. Way too easy on my chip, couldn't make a 12 footer for par. Hole 10 - Driver, sand wedge to 7 feet for birdie. Hole 11 - Hit a good drive, then nearly lost my 3 wood approach into a hazard. Hit an okay pitch onto the green, but I didn't give my birdie putt enough steam. Hole 12 - Pushed a 3i hybrid right, then after watching the old guy in our group (who also works at the course) play a neat, sloping pitch from where I was, I played an even better shot and almost holed it for birdie. I'll take a par on that hole any day. Hole 13 - First fairway I missed all day. Found a fairway bunker, laid up to 160, then blocked another 7i. Really short-sided myself. Had to carry a bunker, then it was straight downhill to the pin. Hit a flop that carried 6 feet past the hole, and I made that for par after a teach from the third guy in our group. Hole 14 - Tried to muscle an 8i, yanked it left. Up and down for par. Hole 15 - Very nearly lost my drive in a pampas bush, still had a clear shot at the green. Hit a big SW (for me) from 110, and my putt was pretty straight forward. Maybe 20 feet, uphill, left to right. I couldn't decide how much break there was, so I just hammered it 10 feet past. Missed that one as well. 3 putts are the worst. Hole 16 and 17 - Good tee shots, sand wedges to 8 feet and 12 feet. Caught the back right lips each time and came out sideways. THOSE are also the worst. Hole 18 - Decent drive, tried to fade a 7i to a tucked pin but started it too far right. Pulled the pin and tried to hole the chip, but couldn't get it to fall. Wanted to finish in the 60s, but I really wasn't hitting my irons as accurately as I needed. I think it's not so much a swing flaw that's causing a push, though that's my miss. When I don't play regularly, I have a tendency to set up closed to the target. So I'm pretty much hitting slight fades (my current shot shape) on the wrong line. Also, meant to say thanks to thebushcommander. I got those shorts in the other day. Wore the grey UA ones today, actually. I like them! And zinc68, I'll be honest - I have no idea how Sergio's preparing for the US Open, but as well as he played in the Players, I should have extended our golf ball bet to that tournament, too. Are we still on for the other majors? Lowest score for the tournament between Sergio/Tiger? If Tiger doesn't work out his driving issues, I'll be looking forward to some TaylorMade TPs in my mailbox.

Driving and chipping are probably the two best parts of my game. Good drives give me nice looks at pins, and chipping helps cover up mistakes with approaches. Also, the better I chip it, the less I have to rely on my putter to save me. I'm not awful at it, but I *wish* putting were my strong suit. I can always think of a few putts per round I should have made. Did you get the PM grind on the Callaways? I chipped around with a 60 degree on the putting green at Golfsmith. It's got a taller-toe and less-rounded look than a traditional tear-drop wedge. I think they're trying to emulate old Ping wedges that are exempt from the groove rules (is that still a thing)? Not a bad wedge, but I prefer my Rotex 58* from Cleveland. I've always liked the heft of a Cleveland wedge.
