Mike Schur realized the ending wasn't going to be dark enough. Since he figured it was too late to go back and re-tape the finale, he had Harris Wittels killed as an alternative.

Even in the Late Night thread, the consensus has generally been that it's not great. And that Craig Ferguson's interview style was a lot better.
