Props to Marnie for being tactless and announcing her engagement at Ray's election party.

Marnie, Hannah and Jessa can't resist making everything about them. That's why they're such terrible friends.

It's interesting that there were at least three conversations this episode where a woman accused someone of misogyny and were, presented by the show to be, wrong. I don't know what it's a sign of, but it had to be intentional. Maybe its a bucking expectations thing, we'd all sort of understand if Lena and her writers wanted to hit back after all the crap thrown at them, but having women lecture actual misogynists would have been too on the nose?

In the case of Hannah, she accuses Fran of being a misogynist because he criticized her as a person. Hannah is such a narcissist that she's incapable of recognizing any faults that she hasn't adopted as part of her own personal kitsch (so NOT actually a fault, from her perspective), and so she deflects any criticism meant for her alone, as a criticism against ALL women instead of looking at herself objectively. That's what the show was trying to say.

Ugh, if anything this is such a stereotype of the girl who has to have the attention of every man around her. She doesn't love Ray but she surely doesn't want Ray thinking SHE'S unwantable - have to tell him everything!

Great writing, GIRLS. :v:

Another good episode, with everyone except Adam (and maybe Ray) acting reprehensible. It is also good to see that the real world exists outside the little codependent hugbox that the girls and friends have set up, such as when the principal has to talk to Hannah about boundaries.

The look on Aces face when he realizes he has overplayed his hand was priceless.

The simple explanation is that Lena Dunham and the show's writers are self-aware enough and have enough of a sense of humor that they can poke fun at their own beliefs and attitudes, and the beliefs and attitudes of people that watch the show.

Besides the stuff with Hannah accusing other people of misogyny, there was also the whole thing with the 'triggering' story, and how Hannah dated a black guy for two episodes and then gave some speech about she didn't see race and all that. It's funny because it's making fun of the behavior and the people, not the issues themselves.

What an odd ending. It almost felt tacked on, like Sith Lord Ex-boyfriend left without much notice and they were scrambling to narratively ignore the fallout from the ending by the time the next season comes around.

AND MY SONG IS...
What a weird finale. I liked the Ray stuff as always and the conversation with Shosh and Ray's colleague was good but nothing else really worked for me.

Especially Hannah and dude teacher ending up together. She treats him like garbage and acts like Hannah in front of him constantly at the school but since he was nice to her one time that's all we need to make that relationship seem earned?

The casting for Desi might have been perfect in that I loving hate that character so much. I don't even like looking at his dumb face.

lmao, that ending was straight out of the Mary Sue playbook for dunham. Who else appreciated that they invoked a capricious six month time skip for the sole purpose of assuring the viewer that hannah got exactly what she wanted despite not deserving or earning it, and absolutely zilch about any of the characters you'd actually want to see. :roflolmao:

Very good finale. Ray crushing Desi was beautiful. Though I don't know that Marnie killing an important set on her own felt earned for her, they spun it really well and turned it into more of a win for Ray in that his perception of the world was mostly correct.

Coulda done with less of the birth going wrong, Jessa coming in, taking control and forcing them to a hospital immediately and then later they find out it was a breach would have worked better. I mean, Jesus, it was a month and a half early. Adam should have dragged her out of the tub as soon as he got there.

Ray is definitely the MVP of the season, good on him.

I hope Shosh goes to Japan and never comes back, not that I dislike her character, but I'm hoping that's how it works out. Realistically though, she'll probably be back in NYC next season after loving up somehow.

I thought that was a series finale until I read this thread. It just seemed to finish off everyone's problems too neatly. Shoshana goes on an adventure and starts her real life! Jessa is going to be a therapist! Marnie realized she can do it by herself! Hannah gets a normal boyfriend! Whatever.

I think the phone call at the end could be seen as Hannah realizing that her mom is horrible and she's just like her, and choosing to reject that. Her mom's rant was pretty heavy handed, even for this show.

A whole season pregnant with buildup finally attempts to pay off with home birth, including the nipples from Hell.

I want to take a second and make sure we all appreciate the actors who play the crazy junkie couple downstairs, especially Adams sister. She sells the role 110%, and makes me physically ill with how much i abhor the character. Good job, actress!

Hannah got her fairytale Mary Sue ending as a reward for all her bad choices.
Shoshanna bla bla bla magical coffee shop employee bla bla bla Japan.
Marnie says "I'm pretty good too!" and a bright flash and loud bang sounds out. When everyone regains sight, they can see that her self esteem had been there all along.
Jessa does something not stupid, selfish or useless, and realizes it feels good. She selfishly realizes if she does more stuff for others, she'll feel REALLY good, just like drugs and sex!
Adam does the reasonable thing, but a bunch of crazies peer pressures him into carrying his sister with a foot sticking out her vagina in his arms to the hospital. I also realized that Adam surrounded by the crazies in the scene before the one where he faints is a perfect metaphor for how I feel at work, but that's a discussion for another time.
Ray white knights Marnie, who is a grownass adult capable of making her own lovely decisions. Is completely and utterly vindicated from that by the loving blood money.

Hannahs mom who just got tenure with guaranteed income and stability which offers her the opportunity to kick out Hannahs dad and build a life of her own making says her life is over.

Hannahs dad has the courage to come out as gay, but not to end his marriage to a woman who now loathes him and has to stick around to deal with his new issues.

The scene where Laird starts referencing the Tom & Jerry cartoon and both Adam and Hannah have their face in their hands and then Adam screams and Laird may be the single funniest bit they've done. That whole home birth plot was amazing, hilarious, and disgusting. I enjoyed it.

I don't get this complaint about the finale. Do you really think that the next season set 6+ months in the future is just going to be continued redemption/happiness for each character? Maybe Hannah is happy, but bored with perfect Fran and that serves as her middle-20's drama for next season. Maybe Marnie reunites with no-brow because Ray hurt his feelings at the coffee shop or HBO doesn't provide the budget to shoot in Tokyo. Good finale where I'm happy for each character and am interested to see what's next

Sooo, did it explain how Fran forgot about what a manipulative nutjob Hannah is or...?

If all we got is the "hand on the back/god she's a mess I feel bad for her" scene, then yeesh that's some rough reasoning on his part. Hannah is nowhere near charming enough to make him forget how awkward the art show was.

If he's willing to date her after all that, he's probably damaged in ways that have yet to be revealed.
