Someone explain more about deep caving (besides on my mom, lol) that sounds potentially even more dangerous and terrifying.

It's quite fun and easy. I've done it before. I'm not really well-versed on the finer points though since I don't have a cave diving certification. Strongly considering Everest next year.

my main response to reading "into thin air" was wanting to climb mt. everest so i guess this works on me?

I haven't read such a page-turner of a book in years. One thing that stands out is how easy a time of it, the book writer had compared to everyone else. People are going insane (checking air bottles in the pile) on top and he's just chugging along, no big deal. Everyone drops like flies and he's all "doodley doo, doop de doop, climbing everest, maybe I'll do it again some day" (no I don't know if he actually said that)

If you want to climb a mountain that's doable without anything other than hiking boots, in about 45 minutes or so (2+ hours from sea level? maybe 15 mins from not sea level if you run up, as some people I know can do?) but is MORE DEADLY THAN EVEREST, go to Cape Town and climb table mountain. It's killed more people than everest.
Everest: 219 deaths since 1920
Table Mountain: 225 deaths since 1920.

people seemed particularly clumsy in 2006.

also this thing is apparently the new golden gate. Why does everyone in California want to kill themselves?

That infographic is inaccurate, e.g. the person in the vehicle who died a couple of weeks ago didn't commit suicide. They hosed up and there was a traffic jam. Also another guy was hit in a tunnel in SF, and that was a homeless person, I think that was an accident too.

There's a high school in palo alto which has famously suicidal students. The kids are all pushed super hard by each other and their parents. When they don't come first in class, they off themselves. It's called Gunn High. The last suicide wasn't a Gunn student, it was another student from another high-pressure high school.

People die on table mountain in cape town every year. I've climbed it a bunch of times. It's 3558 feet but starts almost at sea level (maybe like 50-100 feet). You can climb it in one single hour, or less if you go up certain routes. I may have posted this in the last thread but I forgot. Anyway, you get such deaths as:
smoke inhalation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Table_Mountain_fire
falling judo experts: http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/western-cape/don-t-walk-alone-on-table-mountain-1.1763363#.VQx1c2TF-Uc
crushed to death: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/southafrica/1313154/Holiday-girl-crushed-to-death-by-cable-car.html
american diplomats falling to their death: http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/western-cape/us-diplomat-falls-to-his-death-during-hike-1.1622303#.VQx1cmTF-Uc
more falling americans: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/usa/7824632/World-Cup-2010-USA-fan-dies-on-Cape-Towns-Table-Mountain.html

If this is what happens on what I think is a super easy and safe mountain, I am surprised anyone manages to get up everest.

A facebook friend of mine posted about the base jumper, and I was about to post 'lol base jumpers' when someone else posted "he was such a great guy, a good friend of mine" etc so I just shut up instead. I'll say it here though: lol base jumpers.
