one thing to look forward to this year: http://www.newyorker.com/news/sporting-scene/kilian-jornet-sky-runner?intcid=mod-latest quote:Montaz-Rosset told me that the aim will be to run up and down the northern Tibet side starting from one of the last inhabited places before base camp, Rongbuk Monastery, at sixteen thousand four hundred feet. That route would translate to some twelve thousand five hundred feet of elevation gain—a little less than on Aconcagua. Jornet intends to carry only a backpack, without oxygen or the assistance of fixed ropes or other climbers.

People should be arriving at base camp any day now and the sherpas should be fixing ropes at the moment. Don't know how far they are, probably camp 1 or 2. edit: yep http://www.alanarnette.com/blog/2015/04/12/everest-2015-updates-and-impressions/ quote:We are now at Gorak Shep and will arrive at Everest Base Camp tomorrow, Monday April 13. While the route has been fixed through the Icefall to Camp 1, there have been no reports of teams starting their climbs. Most are either still trekking in or doing acclimatization exercises on Lobuche Peak, or to Pumori Camp 1 near Everest Base Camp.

Thanks to this thread I'm going to climb a mountain this summer and by "climbing" I mean I'm hiking up to roughly 3000m and after a healthy schnitzel + weissbier at the top I'm going down by cable car.

prinneh posted:So besides kilimanjaro, mt fuji and Mount Kinabalu what are some reasonable mountains to climb/hike that aren't dangerous, but still pretty spectacular for someone with no real climbing experience? Preferably something not in the usa as I'm in Europe. All mountains can be dangerous without hiking/climbing experience. For a day hike you could for example hike to the top of the Zugspitze starting in Ehrwald Austria, crossing into Germany during the hike and ending up on top at roughly 3000m. It's a 14km hike with nice views and you can get back down by cable car. The top is tourist central though. There are several cable cars that take tourist there. You can also do it in 1 or 2 days from Garmisch-Partenkirchen on a 23k hike sleeping in a hut, or with a bit of climbing and via ferrata on the Höllentalroute. in a day. The first two tours can be done without guides, experience or special equipment. For the last one I would recommend a guide if you've never climbed/ went hiking in the alps before. A guided tour should set you back around 125 € plus 50ish for equipment rental. First two are from the climbing option, last one from the hike. elwood fucked around with this message at 18:07 on May 25, 2015 |

Soooo, after years and years of reading this and the previous threads I finally gave in and I'm going on a hike to ebc next year. Sadly it's gonna be during the fall season, so I won't have the chance to see those lunatics trying to be the first whatever to summit everest walking on hands or something. 22 day hike for around €2800. Anyone got recommendations for a good winter sleeping bag?
