I think you may be overestimating how much people actually think about video game narratives considering all the people who thought GTA IV – a story which consisted of nothing but a prolonged angsty whine about how much everything sucks (see also: GTA V, Max Payne 3) – and loving Spec Ops: The Line were in any way "mature". Presumably there's a lot of overlap between those people and the ones who declared The Last Of Us "game of the decade" because it had a protagonist who was both occasionally likeable and an undeniable rear end in a top hat, because that's all it takes for the low, low bar of video game writing to be considered sheer brilliance.
