To be absolutely fair to Bob (probably more than he really deserves), I'm pretty sure he's come the other way on Other M and Sucker Punch since those videos. At the very least, he admits when he's wrong and tends to be upfront about his blindspots and biases. GameOverthinker is still unwatchable garbage though.

I don't know what places like Machinima, Escapist, or CA pay or how easy it is to replicate that money with Patreon or independent ad revenue - although lots of guys seem to be able to do okay without being managed these days. Look how few fucks the Two/Super Best Friends give about the Machinima gig these days. Pretty sure CA only paid their non-Doug talent with "exposure". Everything the content makers got came from ad revenue, which was why Linkara made that one video asking people to not use adblock on his videos.

So having never seen MoS, why does kid-Clark whear a cape and do a Superman pose? I remember it in the teaser trailers and wondering this, do they show him reading comic books and wanting to be a superhero? Are there already superheros in that universe? Does he have Alan Scott's autograph on his copy of Green Lantern or something? Or is it just mindless "IT'S loving SUPERMAN!!!" imagery?

Also I don't think Moviebob claims to be objective. In fact, I remember a couple of his opinion pieces on The Escapist being about how "objectivity" is kind of a dumb thing to strive for when your job is to give your opinion on things.

Jay O posted:Oh, absolutely. Even if you're explicitly talking about the Fox Kids version (Escaflowne was released uncut on home video and most people are familiar with that version because the Fox cut flopped,) it's not nearly as bad as what they did to One Piece, Tokyo Mew Mew, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors or several other forgotten kids' properties. Escaflowne got off relatively easy. I think One Piece is the worst, though. The edits in the 4Kids One Piece dub were truly bizzare. There was changing rifles into squirt guns, changing a pistol into some kind of hammer contraption, and, I poo poo you not, changing one villain's weapon from foot long iron spikes into "poison suction cup darts". Then there was changing all of the alcohol into juice, all of Sanji's cigarettes into lollipops (which seems quaint in comparison to everything else) and editing out Smoker's cigars entirely, which was quite a feat considering he was always smoking two or three at a time. The edits just made him look like he had jaw problems and couldn't close his mouth all the way.

I know Errant Signal is sort of doing this but from what I've seen it's not quite what I mean. I've been vaguely considering doing my own series which looks at video games from a more literary perspective but wanted to see what else is out there before I really got going. Noah Gervais does good stuff in my opinion, he tends to do retrospectives on a franchise so he can compare how they evolved over time. I'd easily recommend his Call of Duty, Mass Effect, and Fallout retrospectives.

I think he's probably attempting to turn the reviewer format around by dissecting good pieces, which, like you said, don't necessarily have as many easy targets as bad works. Now, you are right that he's so far been picking only works he's already familiar with. It would be an improvement to see him look at some more modern works that us fogeys-in-waiting will poo-poo when the drat kids get older. , Really That Good strikes me as a more low brow version of KKall's stuff, except while BHH tries to give equal treatment and find meaning even in stuff he doesn't like, MovieBob's been sticking strictly to his favorite movies so far. I think part of it is that he wants to look at older movies that have stood the test of time and have built up a ton of hype and reputation, but it would do him some good to move out of his comfort zone.

There's a part of me that wants to believe that Kojima was going for some sort of commentary with Quiet, since she gets set on fire at the beginning of the game and the next time you see her it's all bikinis and pantyhose, like it's a Bullshit Science way of dealing with burn trauma. Like, from the moment you first recruit her the camera starts getting all up in her rear end and between her tits, ogling her at every opportunity, but then you put two and two together and realize she's the one who got the fire bath at the beginning and then you just feel disgusted with yourself, and every subsequent butt shot has a sense of wrongness the same way that putting a child soldier in your crosshair does. The whole photosynthesis explanation fucks with that idea though. It also isn't helped that most gamers don't have nearly the self-awareness necessary to feel any sort of shame when blatantly objectifying women, so any intended message beyond "Wank Material" is bound to go right over most guys' heads. Probably giving Kojima too much credit, but that was my thinking early on.

icantfindaname posted:RE: Quiet, I see a lot of people mad that Kojima doesn't provide any sort of fig leaf or justification for her design, but why would that make it any better? What that says to me is that the people making that complaint care more about decorum and how liking and playing the game makes them look, rather than the actual content itself The criticism being discussed is that there is a dumb plot justification for her design and that it doesn't excuse a god drat thing.
