I think part of it is also because South Park talks about whatever is relevant at the time, going back to older episodes is really weird. Especially when you watch their stuff from the Bush years +10 later and realize "Wow...you two had no idea what you were talking about." There are a lot of South Park episodes like that that REALLY do not hold up. And then there is the fact that I know about three people at my office who are real life Eric Cartmans.

I also think that animation aimed at an older audience as a whole has upped its game. The Venture Bros, Rick and Morty, Bojack Horseman, all of them have that edge to them while still being ABOUT something. Something usually a lot of people can relate to. South Park is still fundamentally the same show it was when it first debuted. And it’s core message at this point feels like “caring about stuff makes you an idiot, no matter what that is” and...well gently caress that.
