What's everyone's opinion on Bennett the Sage? He reviews schlock anime from the 90s and early 2000s, and occasionally dips into some weird sketch comedy. He can strike a good balance between letting terrible OVAs speak for themselves and actually having some quite insightful moments. Unfortunately, this can also be frustrating, when he's discussing a show you might want a more in depth look at, and instead he goes for the poop joke instead.

That sums up my option of him pretty well. he really seems to know his stuff and it is really interesting when he goes into detail with it, but sadly his show is often too routed into the Nostalgia Critic formula. I mean, occasionally his jokes are legitimately funny, but overall, I have the feeling there is a lot squandered potential in his reviews

He tends to be more in depth on shows he actually likes or vehemently hates. His recent review of Tokyo Godfathers was excellent, whereas his Night of the Cockroaches review was a godawful parody of The Critic.

Also, the angry commenter video after his Critic crossover was legitimately funny.

I'm iffy on Takahata's filmography as well, though that includes Grave of the Fireflies. I'm kinda with Sage on this one, I don't really like seeing a man's apology letter to his dead sister being turned into a "shut the gently caress up and obey your parents" message. Really pretty to look at, but not without problems.

lovely to hear about Monty. I may have hated what he did to the last few Red vs Blue seasons and RWBY is a trainwreck, but I can't say I didn't enjoy some of his early stuff like Haloid. Poor guy.

The thing about Sage's review of Fireflies is how he mainly reads things from a westerner's interpretation of anime. He doesn't so much go into the detail of what was going on in Japan at the time (though he does bring it up, mind you) as he criticizes the film for shortcomings involving character development and changes done in the adaptation. I don't have a problem with a film that wants to educate people, but I agree that it shouldn't have been done based on someone's personal memoirs. But again this is being taken from an outsider's perspective, where the rest of the world sees an anti war film that Takahata has vehemently denied allegations of.

The Escapist has been imploding for a while now, and the big issue seems to be the people upstairs. Jim Sterling quit after his boss at the Escapist willingly let the Gamergate debacle engulf the site, and then even hosted the opinions of a developer/journalist/somebodycan'trememberproperly who had publicly slandered Jim. Recently, they had a huge number of layoffs at the site for longtime employees, and they have been bleeding content for years without replacing it. There is almost nothing on the site anymore that hasn't been rehosted somewhere else first. Any time one of their big draws leaves or gets shitcanned, they just throw more Top Ten lists or repeats of old Game Theory episodes. Most of LoadingReadyRun's stuff is on Youtube already, and even the Critical Miss guy, douchebag he can be, is considering leaving the site and just going to patreon.

If there's a trend I've noticed over the past year it is content producers striking out on their own. People breaking away from Machinima, The Escapist burning off all its talent, and Channel Awesome being pretty much irrelevant anymore, these hosting sites are on their last legs.

It was a Kurtzman and Orci script, the guys also responsible for the Transformers movie scripts and the Amazing Spiderman Series. While Abrams co-wrote it, I'm hoping that Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back and Co-EP7 Writer) slapped the pencil out of Abrams's hand whenever he wrote something stupid.

Ugggh, I've been rewatching some of Nostalgia Critic's crossover videos, and dammit they are annoying whenever the guest star knows a hell of a lot more than Doug does. Any time someone might have something insightful to say, the script has NC shutting them up because they're "boring". See all of his Star Trek reviews, especially his one with Linkara, or the Digimon Movie with JO where she tried to go into detail about the animation and got shut up. Maybe I want to hear something interesting rather than needless nitpicking once in a while.

Jumping off the Redwall discussion, has anyone here read the book Raven Quest? It was nominated for a Silver Birch award about seven or eight years ago (its an award given out to Canadian YA literature) and I thought that it handled talking animals rather well. Its generic as all hell when it comes to plot, but the difference between the super smart ravens, the less clever city dump crows and the wolfpack were pretty well written. I also liked how it treated human interaction and interference as this destructive alien force, where the Two-Legs are mysterious killing machines that invade the wolves territory yet tempt them with their livestock.

My favorite grey choices in KOTOR 2 are the Ithorian/Czerka and the Talia/Vaklu conflicts. General Vaklu is a very charismatic leader and a powerful ally to have, but unfortunately his second in command is in cahoots with the Sith. But Vaklu himself just wants what is best for Onderon and who can blame him? The Republic is falling apart and the planet is still recovering from the aftermath of two wars. Talia is the true leader, but she follows the word of the Jedi who haven't been making the best decisions lately and have a bad habit of bringing the life eating Nihilus down on them.

The Czerka Ithorian split isn't quite as good, but it does have a nice payoff in the end. Again, the split isn't so much about good/evil, but about pragmatism/optimism. Czerka definitely have shady business practices, but so does every corporation in Star Wars. And while the supposed agenda of the Ithorians that Kreia posits never actually comes true, she makes a good point about not trusting them. Czerka is up front, they will pay you for services given. The Ithorians are a long term investment that might not even work.

Again, in the postwar galaxy, can you really blame people for looking out for their own.

Every single complaint he had amounted to "Its Thoooomaaaass the loving tank engine!" Every time.

Now admittedly i stopped watching Thomas after that movie came out, but the three first seasons hold a special place in my heart. I've got all of them with both the Ringo Starr and George Carlin narrations, and, as weird as it sounds, they are some of the best examples of world building I've seen in a children's television series. The treated the viewer with respect and didn't talk down to them because it was aimed at kids. It helps that they were based off of the original stories written by Awdry, but for five minute long vignettes, there was a ton of character development and plot progression. And for god's sake, they're trains that talk. Trains are awesome and miniature sets are awesome and Doug Walker knows gently caress all about half the poo poo he reviews.
