Bat the animated series managed to balance the fun aspects of batman with the grimness of his character. Like harley quinn being a complete goofball but stustill indicative of a abusive relationship between her and the joker

To get this back on track, I watched on of Doug Walker's video reviews, this one for Small Soldiers.

So, okay, he spends half the review making comparisons to Gremlins, and then gets confused when the "family film", as he puts it, ends up with some extremely hosed up imagery in it. It's loving Joe Dante. The guy basically lived on skewering American capitalism and nuclear families. How can you be so aware of what is happening and yet so tone deaf at the same time?

I have a feeling he just doesn't get satire or parody, which both of these particular films thrive on. How he also missed out on the fact that the Commando Elite were supposed to be exaggerated caricatures of "heroic" army worship action figures is beyond me.

This would explain a lot about the movies...

Again, Small Soldiers is a Joe Dante film. I'd be more surprised if it didn't have satire. But the bery fact that the GI Joe and Barbie knockoffs in the movie are the bad guys should have made it obvious. Doug says that the commando elite made the gwendy dolls alive to be their sex slaves, when the first thing out of their mouth is declaring themselves cannon fodder gwendies.

Joe Dante does NOT like the american toy industry's promotion of military toys and barbie doll ideals.

Was coming in to say the same - LAH fell into the trap of pointing out how silly an action movie cliche is, and then resorted to doing it over and over again. You can do this, but it's tough to do it well and generally needs something to subvert expectations and prove to the audience that the movie was doing it intentionally. Making a joke about how action movies are cookie-cutter and then following cookie-cutter action movie rules makes the joke fall flat, and I think that was part of why LAH missed the mark, though I did find it entertaining to watch as a kid.

Hot Fuzz immediately springs to mind as a parody of action films that managed to pull this off. Because it takes the first three quarters of the film tearing down action movie cliches, only to rebuild them in the most gloriously silly way possible for the final shootout.

The CarnEv I'll review isn't as good as his other ones because he was trying to do commentary while playing it live, and ross has already admitted he's terrible at improv. Watch some of his other reviews like Strife or the snowmobile game. In the latter, he comes up with a crazy theory about how the band Point Defiance are actually time travelers to explain how their album that wasn't released for years ended up in a shovelware snomobile game that was created before the band was even formed.

Extra History comes out with their second video detailing the South Sea Bubble. I have to say I really like these Extra History videos. They aren't exactly in depth (Knowing a lot about WW1 and the Sengoku Jidai had me tearing my hair out at times because of some of the major players they omit), but as a broad overview, they do encourage people to search out the finer details.

Apparently the escapist approached lrr and told them unskippable wasn't making enough money, so they were going to cancel it. They offered lrr the chance to make another show, but since unskippable was the only property they owened, lrr turned them down and left. They still own feed dump so that's going up on their youtube and is open for patreon support. But unskippable was owned by the escapist, so mst3k gaming edition isn't coming back and lrr can't make another show in the same format without tempting copyright.

I'd love to see Chuck cover The 8th MS Team. His review on War in the Pocket was really good and drat depressing. Gotta love a show that rips apart the toy driven Gundam Franchise like that. I get that Gundam is primarily about how War tears people apart, but I find it ironic that a show focusing so much on military horrors makes most of its money selling model kits to children. War in the Pocket poo poo all over that entire notion and I loved it.

I should clarify that I feel you shouldn't completely dismiss people who dislike EVA based on their opinion of the characters. Hating Shinji for being a whiny bitch or Asuka for being a petulant rear end in a top hat who abuses everyone around her might be the point, but intentionally lovely characters are still lovely. It's a relevant criticism of the show if you find the characters so hateful and pathetic that you can't continue watching. It just means you have basic human empathy.

Speaking of SF debris, DS9 and people who hate it, you should try watching Confused Matthew's "review" of Season 7 of DS9, by which I mean he has a temper tantrum about the finale of season six and space satan Dukat.
Or you could check out any of his other videos as well if you want to see a person so tone deaf he makes Nostalgia critic sound like Mozart. Lion King, The Incredibles and Up! Are all apparently terrible children's films because they deal with death at some point.

I looked up Samus's wikipedia entry and immediately regretted it. For a character touted as one of the better portrayals of women in video games, more words are dedicated to talking about her tits and two dozen top ten "sexy" characters lists than her actual game portrayals.

sexy women are bad portrayals of women, especially when it was gaming magazines and a joke G4 miniseries that are the only real source of that sexualzation, as opposed to the games.

I wouldn't say having sexy characters is a bad thing, technically, but rating a character's quality based on fan art and porn of said character is misrepresentation at its worst.

Okay, I'm confused now. Is the thread coming down in favor of the zero suit or against it? Because I'm still not sure if the guy responding to me being annoyed that more people focused on Samus's tits than her personality was arguing against me or supporting me. Personally I've really got nothing against the Zero suit and just think its kinda dumb, my issue was more with how the reception of samus by the gaming media has everything to do with "dude she's hot" and not "she's a stone cold bounty hunter".

Isn't Matt Sloan the guy who did those Chad Vader videos and then someone at Lucasarts thought his voice was good enough to actually BE Darth Vader?

I am always astounded at how much money nerds are willing to throw around to have someone vindicate their guilty pleasure rape/incest/lesbian/ fetish shows. I'm pretty sure it was probably only one person asking sf debris to cover kannazuki no miko, and cover the entire series. Let me put this into perspective for you: getting Chuck to do a review of an episode for you is expensive. Like, really loving expensive. Fifty bucks will get you a review of a one hour long television program, with the review ranging from 14 to 30 minutes. Animated shows or 30 minute episodes cost about half of that, while full movie reviews are 150 to 200 bucks. So I'm assuming kanazuki is a regular 24 episode season, somebody spent at least 600 dollars for sf debris to validate their lesbian romance obsession.

Starship Troopers: Roughneck Chronicles was a surprisingly good show. How come more people haven't covered Starship Troopers? It was a miniz craze in the late 90s, with a good movie and a decent tv series, and its been popular enough to have three sequels and an OVA ripoff based on the film version and the book, respectively. The only internet critics I've seen touch it are Mike J and Decker Shadow. By the way, check that second guy out. He's a fairly standard critic, but he's covered a lot of interesting sf and horror films on his channel.
