It’s a depressing thought: does Doug bring in million-dollar-range views? Literally everyone else who has ever tried has done infinitely better videos within two years at most, and struggled with income for seven.

The guestimate from one of the Youtube subscriber/watch is daily average of "$150 - $2.4K".

That seems to be $50k - $800k per year, plus merch and sponsorship deals.

Dan had some better insight into the actual numbers.

The only way I can countenance more of the CA story today without being overcome by extreme sadness and anger is to grab at this extremely parenthetical element: a Cheesecake Factory has recently opened in my city and I want to know if I should go, even if I have to go alone?

You should go. And since it's a Cheesecake Factory, there's a very small, but non-zero chance that Lindsay Ellis will appear there spontaneously, like a super-rare legendary Pokemon.

Then there's the embedded brand deals which, lmao, they've signed the top-shelf trash that gets leading sponsorship mention, mid-roll, and top placement in the description.

Yeah, I've seen a few of those "description ads" just by accident over past couple weeks. Every single one of them seems like the sort of slimy sales pitch you get from the Facebook friend you've never heard from in 10 years, but suddenly has "an amazing product that changed my life and you can join me and work from home and be your own boss and please buy this merch sitting in my garage..."

I recall you mentioning on a stream at one point how much of a raw deal those ad spots are, since you're collecting a flat fee to give a company an ad placement for forever. Since you can't replace a YouTube video, it's impossible to say "I'll sell you 5000 views for your ad". It's there and will always be there.

Though now I lol because 99.999% of those VC-funded "sell things at a loss until we make money" tend to go bankrupt. So the CA archive will be littered with the corpses of dead companies. "Hi, Doug here. I don't always spray liquids up my butt, when I do, I want them to be as carbonated as possible. Go to EnemaBidetSoda.Com and use the code NCBUTT to get 10% off your first order!"

6 months down the road EnemaBidetSoda.com goes out of business, the domain lapses, but there is still a link to it on a video that gets 700k+ views.

...

hmm, I think I've just discovered a new business model. Buy up that domain in a fire sale, wait for the accidental traffic to come, ???, then profit!

I removed the video and would prefer no one reupload it, as I've been taking down copies.

Suggestion for a re-cut, all of which include editing out Doug:

1) Just a 15 minute loop of you slamming down the VCR and jamming the A Talking Cat dvd in.
2) The review, but have Phelan overlay OldMan on top of Doug, and replace all of Doug's dialog with "EEEeeeEEeeEeeeEEeeeeEEeeeEEeeeeeeeEEEeeE"
3) The review, with the audio muted. All dialog is replaced with random public-domain sound clips from early 1900s Scandinavian radio dramas. Then send it to Brad to subtitle it.
4) The review, except instead of a scripted review it's a Movie Nights episode, and instead of the original dialog it's your own dialog, and instead of A Talking Cat it's literally any other movie you want to do. Also, change the title of the episode.

Jackula is a full gamergater chud and possibly mentally unhinged.

Like his chudness managed to get him booted from CA. That should be all you need to know.

Uh... huh?

Caveat: I haven't really watched either HorrorGuru or Count Jackula's videos since they switched to full vlog over scripted reviews, but...

Jackula: As was mentioned, he isn't a gatorade. I can't speak for any mental state, especially not based off an online persona of "a vampire from the planet Dracula stuck on Earth reviewing bad movies for Satan". Like, there's an entire Lot's Wife of salt there to take with any assessment. From what he put forth, he is a full-blown Satanist, in the vein of "Church of Satan", as opposed to "eat babies". If you don't know the difference, look into it, it's quite fascinating. He's made clear his views on Christianity, summed up as "I was hosed over by it's hateful followers every step of my life". Being a half-Asian "weird kid" in a small town-- you can imagine.

Like Dan, I long ago unfollowed him from Twitter. His content was mostly good, but he would retweet nudes and straight-up porn (both drawn and real) several times a day. Like, I get it-- sex positive, sexually liberated. Terrific. And I also get the followers / group of fans he's cultivating leans heavily into the "sex & horror films gently caress YEAH" crowd. But retweeting NSFW on an account that's otherwise SFW-- it instantly self-selects the people who CAN follow you. Even if I wanted to see all the tiddies and ding-dongs, my employer doesn't.

His scripted videos were quite good. Excellent screen presence, good comedic timing, nice insights into the movies at hand. If you're interested, I would suggest watching one or both of "Targets" (which has some excellent 'some rear end in a top hat' points to make), or I Spit On Your Grave (originally billed as the first part of misogyny in horror). If one or both of those don't strike your fancy, then you can safely never watch any of his stuff again, because you've gotten the sampler platter.

Horror Guru: Presents his love of horror films in a big, dumb, enthusiastic way. Very much in the "this movie is gory and fun and I enjoyed the gently caress out of it" attitude. Self-admittedly gets into some Twitter arguments when he should be sleeping, so there are the occasional not-completely-thought-out ideas presented, but that are still more reasonable than your average chud's brain-farts. Like Jackula, has switched only to vlogs. Tends to be a bit centrist-leaning-left, with the "it'd be great if we could all get alone and there was more positivity in the world-- but people who dedicate their lives to hate & violence & bigotry & fascism-- those people can get hosed with a cactus". To give you an idea, he ofter retweets Boogie. I'd almost say that while Boogie's centrist opinions come off as naive and non-confrontational, HorrorGuru's come off more optimistic and encouraging people to be better.

I think the best example of his attitude would be when EL James did that (really stupid and poorly planned) Q&A on Twitter, and it turned out exactly like it did. That morning:

https://twitter.com/TheHorrorGuru/status/615721544174583808

quote:

Good to know online harassment is perfectly acceptable if you happen to not like an author's book. Lots of hypocrisy in my feed today.

... some tweets to him ranging from "it's okay to criticize her for her normalization of abuse" to "gently caress her and her book"

https://twitter.com/TheHorrorGuru/status/615723073266806785

quote:

Don't bother defending it, people. It's bullshit and I really don't care for your defenses.

and 20 minutes later:

https://twitter.com/TheHorrorGuru/status/615728431859286016

https://twitter.com/TheHorrorGuru/status/615728535878012929

quote:

'Eh. I let my anger get the better of me here. My apologies for harshly dismissing all your tweets.

That being said, it's clear we're not going to see eye to eye on this. At all. So I'll just leave it at that. Already said my peace. (sic)

(plus another I can't find along the lines of "I agree criticizing the work and the author are fine. But it's clear the Q&A was for fans of the book. The time to do it isn't in the middle of a fan event.")

Which is, honestly, a fair stance to take. There was a lot of hate, vitriol and attacks in the Q&A-- and it was in the middle of many people speaking out and condemning online harassment. I would agree with the "fan event" thing if it had been a live event and people crashed it to shout at her. But since this is Twitter, a "public place" effectively, having people on the sidelines doing the equivalent of protesting-- though I'm sure it made management of the event harder for the intern forced to read the hashtag-- it wasn't the same.

...

There you go, that's the overview of Count Jackula and Horror Guru beyond "they are two chuds".

Hmmm.... well, we know that Blockbuster, Brad, Angry Joe, Guru Larry post regularly. I wonder about the others?

Toons These Days: Posted something in March, but there was a gap from November to March of nothing. They somehow didn't get "We're please to announce"-ed off the site for missing the 2-per-month.

Bargain Boy: (aka That One Guy, since that's what the page says)? Seems to be in the middle of a Hellblade LP, so that's an easy 2 a month.

Battle Geek Plus: pumping out a video a week and-- wow, a crossover with Doug about the CD-i Link game, something no one has ever done before! Really scraping the bottom for crossovers.

Gaming Wildlife: I'll say again, gently caress these gatorades. I don't care about them. They've also missed posting anything in Feb or March, so how are they still on the site? Oh, and I'm sure their last video is a wonderful piece of respectful comedy. "Leaked Audio: Disney and Rian Johnson’s phone call about The Last Jedi". From a group of Hungry Hungry Gators. Yup.

Masoko X: Puts out a video every day or so. Someone mentioned he's active on a different aggregate site?

Sage: hitting 2 a month with his reviews

Screen Crashers: Nothing in January or February, so way past the 2-a-month. Their last one was a The Last Jedi vlog. And before that a video with the word "parody" in it, so I'm instantly turned off. Maybe it isn't so bad? OH it's a parody of a trailer, back to being turned off. But maybe one more chance? Oh the description is one of those "OMG NETFLIX RUINED EVERYHING" things about anime. I'm out.

And that's everyone who is left. In theory, if the rules were as important as CA says they are (unspoken: when enforced upon female creators), then 3 of those creators should already be gone.

As long as #ChangeTheChannel is going on, the next thread won't be free of the discussion of it. So, y'know, whatever everyone's most comfortable with.

Brad's been really defensive of the Walkers in the comments of his new review. I'm guessing that's because he did a con with them this weekend, and probably had a good time together.

Well, he has already said his stance on Twitter.

And the refrain put out by #ChangeTheChannel is don't loving harass anyone who has decided to stay or leave.

His best bet, really, is to just reply to any comment with a link to that tweet, and be done with it.

Or say "this comment section is a garbage fire and you know it" and turn off comments. Because some days it just isn't worth it.
