This is the end for Cheapskate Reviews. For my last episode, I’ve made a special about lost film.

I’m ending the show because I got a new job recently that’s taking up more of my time, plus I’m doing other things (Ultimate Frisbee, golf, RPG night, piano playing) that are restricting my ability to film, so I thought I’d switch over to writing reviews instead of filming them. This also lets me focus on what I’m good at (writing) rather than what I’m not so good at (technical aspects of film, looking good on camera).

Edit:

Kyle looks at a Japanese interpretation of a Shakespeare work.

Fine work as usual, Kyle. One of the big differences between Macbeth and Throne of Blood—one that plays into the theme of cynicism that you’ve identified—is that as part of Japanese Lady Macbeth’s pep talk to her husband, she tells him that one of these days, Japanese Banquo is going to tell somebody else about that prophecy and Japanese Duncan will have Japanese Macbeth killed just to be safe, so there’s really no choice in the matter.

So, at what point is any and all forms of internet critic discussion going to be replaced by more easily profitable let's play streams? It seems like a natural progression for internet celebrities, and its around the time I start to lose interest in them. For example, I love gopher's modding tutorials and his retrospectives on bethesda modding, but his only updates for months have been endless let's plays.

Not only are streams less work, but they’re also better at feeding the illusion of intimacy between the Internet celebrity and the audience, so I’d say everything will be streams in a few years or less.

Remember when I reviewed Still Flowin, the movie by Melbourne’s strangest rapper, RAED? Well, I got a message on Vimeo today.

quote:

Hi Cheapskate love your review of Still Flowin. I was the cinematographer on that and yeah RAED is a strange one. It was a paid gig and all I did was follow his directions or lack of it and swallow a most bitter pill but had my hand out for the daily pay I got. I only made sure to have everything exposed properly and focused. I insisted to edit. But RAED did it himself. No need to convince you what a botched up job he did. Out of all the jobs i have done. This one haunts me the most. I also shot exactly 5 music videos for the guy. Again just did the best camerawork I could while I tried to block out RAED's screaching.

Doesn't this effectively make contentid illegal? You can't exactly make a good faith evaluation of fair use if a robot is the only thing that saw the content.

Also it wouldn't take long to get a class action going.

This does not make Content ID illegal. The opinion says:

quote:

We note, without passing judgment, that the implementation of computer algorithms appears to be a valid and good faith middle ground for processing a plethora of content while still meeting the DMCA’s requirements to somehow consider fair use.

I wouldn’t get excited about a class action suit, as class action plaintiffs aren’t likely to receive anything of value.

Yeah except when the director is Joss Whedon and he has to add all his dumb quips and think he is being a groundbreaking feminist director because he puts in scenes where women punch men. I'm glad that the TV division is picking up the slack where the film side has failed over and over.

Mass market movies have little incentive to be feminist because so much of their money comes from screenings in international markets that don't want to see women in charge. TV's market is largely domestic, so they can tailor the product to American (or Canadian or whatever) tastes.
